Abstract: This article reviews recently developed methods for constitutive parameter identification based on kinematic full-field measurements, namely the finite element model updating method (FEMU), the constitutive equation gap method (CEGM), the virtual fields method (VFM), the equilibrium gap method (EGM) and the reciprocity gap method (RGM) Their formulation and underlying principles are presented and discussed These identification techniques are then applied to full-field experimental data obtained on four different experiments, namely (i) a tensile test, (ii) the Brazilian test, (iii) a shear-flexural test, and (iv) a biaxial test Test (iv) features a non-uniform damage field, and hence non-uniform equivalent elastic properties, while tests (i), (ii) and (iii) deal with the identification of uniform anisotropic elastic properties Tests (ii), (iii) and (iv) involve non-uniform strain fields in the region of interest

Abstract: We consider signal and image restoration using convex cost-functions composed of a non-smooth data-fidelity term and a smooth regularization term. We provide a convergent method to minimize such cost-functions. In order to restore data corrupted with outliers and impulsive noise, we focus on cost-functions composed of an e1 data-fidelity term and an edge-preserving regularization term. The analysis of the minimizers of these cost-functions provides a natural justification of the method. It is shown that, because of the e1 data-fidelity, these minimizers involve an implicit detection of outliers. Uncorrupted (regular) data entries are fitted exactly while outliers are replaced by estimates determined by the regularization term, independently of the exact value of the outliers. The resultant method is accurate and stable, as demonstrated by the experiments. A crucial advantage over alternative filtering methods is the possibility to convey adequate priors about the restored signals and images, such as the presence of edges. Our variational method furnishes a new framework for the processing of data corrupted with outliers and different kinds of impulse noise.

Abstract: Background: The process of generating raw genome sequence data continues to become cheaper, faster, and more accurate. However, assembly of such data into high-quality, finished genome sequences remains challenging. Many genome assembly tools are available, but they differ greatly in terms of their performance (speed, scalability, hardware requirements, acceptance of newer read technologies) and in their final output (composition of assembled sequence). More importantly, it remains largely unclear how to best assess the quality of assembled genome sequences. The Assemblathon competitions are intended to assess current state-of-the-art methods in genome assembly. Results: In Assemblathon 2, we provided a variety of sequence data to be assembled for three vertebrate species (a bird, a fish, and snake). This resulted in a total of 43 submitted assemblies from 21 participating teams. We evaluated these assemblies using a combination of optical map data, Fosmid sequences, and several statistical methods. From over 100 different metrics, we chose ten key measures by which to assess the overall quality of the assemblies. (Continued on next page)

Abstract: We report an almost ideal realization of wheeler's "delayed-choice" experiment where the light pulses are true single photons, allowing unambiguous which-way measurements. The clock-triggered single-photon source at the heart of the experiment, previously developed for quantum key distribution, is based on the pulsed, optically excited photoluminescence of a single N-V colour centre in a diamond nanocrystal. This system, which consists in a substitutional nitrogen atom (N) associated to a vacancy (V) in an adjacent lattice site of the diamond crystalline matrix, has an unsurpassed efficiency and photostability at room temperature.

Abstract: Eosinophilia is an important indicator of various neoplastic and nonneoplastic conditions. Depending on the underlying disease and mechanisms, eosinophil infiltration can lead to organ dysfunction, clinical symptoms, or both. During the past 2 decades, several different classifications of eosinophilic disorders and related syndromes have been proposed in various fields of medicine. Although criteria and definitions are, in part, overlapping, no global consensus has been presented to date. The Year 2011 Working Conference on Eosinophil Disorders and Syndromes was organized to update and refine the criteria and definitions for eosinophilic disorders and to merge prior classifications in a contemporary multidisciplinary schema. A panel of experts from the fields of immunology, allergy, hematology, and pathology contributed to this project. The expert group agreed on unifying terminologies and criteria and a classification that delineates various forms of hypereosinophilia, including primary and secondary variants based on specific hematologic and immunologic conditions, and various forms of the hypereosinophilic syndrome. For patients in whom no underlying disease or hypereosinophilic syndrome is found, the term hypereosinophilia of undetermined significance is introduced. The proposed novel criteria, definitions, and terminologies should assist in daily practice, as well as in the preparation and conduct of clinical trials.
