Abstract: In the loss domain, both practical and ethical considerations rule out the systematic use of an incentive-compatible procedure involving real losses. The experimental study presented here aims at investigating whether some easier-to-implement procedure could be adequately used. For that purpose, the subjects’ degree of risk aversion is compared across three payment conditions: a real-losses condition based on a random-lottery (incentive-compatible) system, which serves as a benchmark, and two challengers, namely a “losses-from-an-initial-endowment” procedure and a hypothetical-losses condition. As a by-product, our experimental design also allows us to investigate the impact of monetary incentives in the gain domain. The main result is twofold: no significant difference arises between the three payment conditions in the loss domain, while real and hypothetical choices significantly differ in the gain domain. Our results suggest that the use of monetary incentives may be more crucial in the gain domain than in the loss domain.

Abstract: We consider in this paper systems modeled by timed automata. The timing bounds involved in the action guards and location invariants of our timed automata are not constants, but parameters. Those parametric timed automata allow the modelling of various kinds of timed systems, e.g. communication protocols or asynchronous circuits. We will also assume that we are given an initial tuple π0 of values for the parameters, which corresponds to values for which the system is known to behave properly. Our goal is to compute a constraint K0 on the parameters, satisfied by π0, guaranteeing that, under any parameter valuation satisfying K0, the system behaves in the same manner: for any two parameter valuations satisfying K0, the behaviors of the timed automata are (time-abstract) equivalent, i.e., the traces of execution viewed as alternating sequences of actions and locations are identical. We present an algorithm InverseMethod that terminates in the case of acyclic models, and discuss how to extend it in the cyclic case. We also explain how to combine our method with classical synthesis methods which are based on the avoidance of a given set of bad states. A prototype implementation has been done, and various experiments are described.

Abstract: In a concrete structure subjected to an explosion, for example a concrete slab, the material is subjected to various states of stress which lead to many modes of rupture. Closer to the explosive, a state of strong hydrostatic compression is observed. This state of stress produces an irreversible compaction of the material. Away from the zone of explosion, confinement decreases and the material undergoes compression with a state of stress, which is slightly triaxial. Finally, the compression wave can be reflected on a free surface and becomes a tensile wave, which by interaction with the compression wave, produces scabbing. We present, in this paper, a model aimed at describing these three failure modes. It is based on visco-plasticity and rate dependent damage in which a homogenization method is used in order to include the variation of the material porosity due to compaction. The model predictions are compared with several experiments performed on the same concrete. Computations of split Hopkinson tests on confined concrete, a tensile test with scabbing, and an explosion on a concrete slab are presented.
