Abstract: A novel tool for tsunami wave modelling is presented. This tool has the potential of being used for operational purposes: indeed, the numerical code \VOLNA is able to handle the complete life-cycle of a tsunami (generation, propagation and run-up along the coast). The algorithm works on unstructured triangular meshes and thus can be run in arbitrary complex domains. This paper contains the detailed description of the finite volume scheme implemented in the code. The numerical treatment of the wet/dry transition is explained. This point is crucial for accurate run-up/run-down computations. Most existing tsunami codes use semi-empirical techniques at this stage, which are not always sufficient for tsunami hazard mitigation. Indeed the decision to evacuate inhabitants is based on inundation maps which are produced with this type of numerical tools. We present several realistic test cases that partially validate our algorithm. Comparisons with analytical solutions and experimental data are performed. Finally the main conclusions are outlined and the perspectives for future research presented.

Abstract: We report herein the synthesis of a series of 19 2-hydroxyisoquinoline-1,3(2H,4H)-dione derivatives variously substituted at position 7 aimed at inhibiting selectively two-metal ion catalytic active sites. The compounds were tested against HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) polymerase, HIV-1 RT ribonuclease H (RNase H), and HIV-1 integrase (IN). Most compounds displayed poor inhibition of RT polymerase even at 50 microM. The majority of the synthesized compounds inhibited RNase H and IN at micromolar concentrations, and some of them were weakly selective for IN. Surprisingly, two new hits were discovered, which displayed a high selectivity for IN with submicromolar IC50 values. These enzymatic inhibitory properties may be related to the metal binding abilities of the compounds. Physicochemical studies were consistent with a 1/1 stoichiometry of the magnesium complexes in solution, and the metal complexation was strictly dependent on the enolization abilities of the compounds. Unfortunately, all tested compounds exhibited high cellular cytotoxicity in cell culture which limits their applications as antiviral agents.

Abstract: This paper presents a new method to minimize the torque ripple of a 3-phase, 6-slot, and 4-pole mutually coupled switched reluctance motor (MCSRM 6/4). The difference between a MCSRM and a classical SRM is their winding configuration. In a MCSRM, the mutual inductances are no longer neglectable when compared to self inductance. On the contrary, due to mutual inductances, the MCSRM can produce higher average torque than a classical SRM. A literature review is firstly performed to identify the source of high torque ripple level of a MCSRM. Then, the method using punching holes in rotor poles to modify the waveforms of flux as well as derivatives of inductances with respect to rotor position (dL/d and dM/d ) is proposed. Using the 2-D finite-element method (FEM), the influence of dimensions of punching hole on the electromagnetic performances (average torque and torque ripple) is analyzed. The two MCSRM are supplied by three-phase sine wave currents, and comparisons in terms of average torque and torque ripple versus RMS current density are also carried out. In order to make sure that the presence of punching holes does not cause mechanical problems, some mechanical studies are performed. Finally, experimental tests are also realized to validate numerical results obtained by 2-D FEM.

Abstract: A novel Zr-chain based MOF, namely MIL-163, was designed and successfully synthesized using a bis-1,2,3-trioxobenzene ligand. Endowed with large square-shaped channels of 12 A width, it shows remarkable water uptake (ca. 0.6 cm(3) g(-1) at saturating vapor pressure) and a remarkable stability in simulated physiological media, where archetypical Zr carboxylate MOFs readily degrade.
