Abstract: Second order nonlinear optical properties of a series of trinitrosubphthalocyanine (SubPc) isomers were studied experimentally by electric field induced second harmonic (EFISH) generation and hyper Rayleigh scattering (HRS). These experimental values were compared to the ones obtained theoretically employing both sum over states (SOS) and finite field (FF) methods. From these studies, it was shown that the dipolar contributions to the β tensor are very much dependent on the substitution pattern at the periphery of the subphthalocyanine macrocycle, whereas the octupolar contributions remain mostly unchanged. Consequently, it was deduced that SubPc is extremely well suited for the decoupling of octupolar and dipolar contribution to the NLO response.

Abstract: In this article we concentrate on a particular micromixer that exploits chaotic trajectories to achieve mixing. The micromixer we consider here is a cross-channel intersection, in which a main stream is perturbed by an oscillatory flow, driven by an external source. Depending on the amplitude and frequency of the oscillatory flow, one obtains wavy and chaotic regimes, reminiscent of a tendril-whorl mapping. The chaotic states, in which material lines are stretched and folded, favour mixing. A spatiotemporal resonance phenomenon, in which the material-line deformation is transient, is shown. An experiment using soft lithography and integrated valves, in which the resonant states are revealed, is described. From a practical viewpoint, the cross-channel micromixer offers a variety of regimes, which can be exploited to mix fluids or separate particles of different sizes. In the context of microsystems, it can be viewed as a 'smart' elementary system.

Abstract: This paper discusses the formulation of crowding in public transport and its implications for pricing, seating capacity and optimal scheduling. An analytical model is used to describe the user equilibrium and the optimal equilibrium for different stylized conditions. For the one OD pair case with identical desired arrival time, we derive the optimal dynamic pricing and optimal share of seats. For the uniformly distributed desired arrival times case, we derive the optimal time table and the optimal pricing. Next we generalize the results to the case of a small network with several stations, stochastic choice and allocation of seats.

Abstract: As a step toward the elucidation of the mechanistic pathways governing the known bioactivity of polyoxometalates (POMs), two representative molecules of this class of chemicals, the wheel-shaped [NaP5W30O110]14- (P5W30) and the Keggin-type anion [H2W12O40]6- (H2W12), are shown, by two independent techniques, to interact with the fatty-acid-free human serum albumin (HSA). The excited-state lifetime of the single tryptophan molecule of this protein is dramatically decreased by the binding. The quenching mechanism is found to constitute the first example of energy transfer between HSA and POMs. Such molecular recognition is believed to be a key step for subsequent evolution of the systems. Circular dichroism (CD) was used to assess the structural effects of POM binding on HSA and to confirm the interaction revealed by fluorescence studies.
