TL;DR: In this paper, month-long integrations with a regional climate model covering Europe and the Northern Atlantic are utilized to study the sensitivity of the summertime European precipitation climate with respect to the continental-scale soil moisture content.
Abstract: Month-long integrations with a regional climate model covering Europe and the Northern Atlantic are utilized to study the sensitivity of the summertime European precipitation climate with respect to the continental-scale soil moisture content. Experiments are conducted for July 1990 and 1993. For each of the two months, the control experiment with the initial soil water distribution derived from the operational ECMWF analysis is compared against two sensitivity experiments with dry and wet initial soil moisture distributions. The results demonstrate that summertime European precipitation climate in a belt ∼1000 km wide between the wet Atlantic and the dry Mediterranean climate heavily depends upon the soil moisture content. In this belt, changes in monthly mean precipitation amount to about half of the changes in mean evapotranspiration. Budget analysis of water substance over selected subdomains demonstrate that the simulated sensitivity cannot be interpreted with the classical recycling mechani...

TL;DR: An evolutionary search procedure for tackling assignment type problems that repeatedly constructs feasible solutions of the problem under study by taking account of two complementary notions, namely the trace factor and the desirability factor is presented.
Abstract: In the last few years researchers have shown how insect colonies can be seen as a natural model of collective problem solving. The analogy between the behaviour of ants looking for food and the well known travelling salesman problem has recently given rise to promising solution methods. We present in this paper an evolutionary search procedure for tackling assignment type problems. The algorithm repeatedly constructs feasible solutions of the problem under study by taking account of two complementary notions, namely the trace factor and the desirability factor. The use of such search principles will be illustrated for graph colouring problems. The results obtained have proven satisfactory when compared with those existing in the literature.

TL;DR: It is shown that a combined strategy of block Markov superposition coding and Wyner-Ziv coding achieves the cut-set upper bound on the sum-rate of the two-way relay channel when the relay is in the proximity of one of the terminals.
Abstract: We study the two-way communication problem for the relay channel. Hereby, two terminals communicate simultaneously in both directions with the help of one relay. We consider the restricted two-way problem, i.e., the encoders at both terminals do not cooperate. We provide achievable rate regions for different cooperation strategies, such as decode-and-forward based on block Markov superposition coding and compress-and-forward based on Wyner-Ziv source coding. We also evaluate the regions for the special case of additive white Gaussian noise channels. We show that a combined strategy of block Markov superposition coding and Wyner-Ziv coding achieves the cut-set upper bound on the sum-rate of the two-way relay channel when the relay is in the proximity of one of the terminals.
