Abstract: Reuse and requirements engineering are very important for efficient and successful systems development. However there are many open issues for performing them well in practice, especially raise of requirements. We present a new approach to reusing requirements based on application families i.e. several systems in a given problem domain. In contrast to precious approaches, an application family model in our approach consists of a pool of requirements (linked in a lattice structure), a domain model and a set of discriminants (a special kind of requirement that differentiate one system from another). We focus on how to make an efficient and clean selection of the requirements for a new system from an application family model. We have developed a method for solving this problem and a prototypical tool for supporting it. The method and the prototype were successfully developed under a study contract for ESA (European Space Agency). We present a case study, where we generated commanding requirements for an individual mission from an application family model of commanding requirements for spacecraft control operating systems. As a consequence, we propose this approach for reusing requirements based an application families.

Abstract: OBJECTIVES—In July 1995 the Soufriere Hills volcano on the island of Montserrat began to erupt. Preliminary reports showed that the ash contained a substantial respirable component and a large percentage of the toxic silica polymorph, cristobalite. In this study the cytotoxicity of three respirable Montserrat volcanic ash (MVA) samples was investigated: M1 from a single explosive event, M2 accumulated ash predominantly derived from pyroclastic flows, and M3 from a single pyroclastic flow. These were compared with the relatively inert dust TiO2 and the known toxic quartz dust, DQ12. METHODS—Surface area of the particles was measured with the Brunauer, Emmet, and Teller (BET) adsorption method and cristobalite content of MVA was determined by x ray diffraction (XRD). After exposure to particles, the metabolic competence of the epithelial cell line A549 was assessed to determine cytotoxic effects. The ability of the particles to induce sheep blood erythrocyte haemolysis was used to assess surface reactivity. RESULTS—Treatment with either MVA, quartz, or titanium dioxide decreased A549 epithelial cell metabolic competence as measured by ability to reduce 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT). On addition of mannitol, the cytotoxic effect was significantly less with M1, quartz, and TiO2. All MVA samples induced a dose dependent increase in haemolysis, which, although less than the haemolysis induced by quartz, was significantly greater than that induced by TiO2. Addition of mannitol and superoxide dismutase (SOD) significantly reduced the haemolytic activity only of M1, but not M2 or M3, the samples derived from predominantly pyroclastic flow events. CONCLUSIONS—Neither the cristobalite content nor the surface area of the MVA samples correlated with observed in vitro reactivity. A role for reactive oxygen species could only be shown in the cytotoxicity of M1, which was the only sample derived from a purely explosive event. These results suggest that in general the bioreactivity of MVA samples in vitro is low compared with pure quartz, but that the bioreactivity and mechanisms of biological interaction may vary according to the ash source. Abstract: Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 individuals who had experienced a traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI), focusing on the participants' lived experience of SCI. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and were analysed for recurrent themes using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Here, we present three inter-related recurrent themes all concerning difficulties in adjusting to home life following hospital discharge: "loss of camaraderie", "lack of post-discharge care" and "other people's reactions to spinal cord injury". Participants reported that the camaraderie they formed with fellow patients during their rehabilitative stay in hospital generated feelings of security and community. This was discussed in stark contrast to the isolation and loneliness that they subsequently experienced post-hospital discharge. A perceived lack of physical, practical and psychological support coupled with negative and stigmatising reactions of the wider community served to make adjustment to home life post-SCI particularly difficult for the participants. The findings are discussed in relation to extant SCI literature, and recommendations for future health care of individuals with SCI are made.

Abstract: The integrated collector storage (ICS) is the type of solar water heater that has retained its existance for well over a century. The flat absorber plate ICS collector type is a relatively recent addition. Being effective, low cost and simple to manufacture, their importance has been further enhanced by the recent upsurge in efforts to effectively tap renewable energy resources. Having different inclinations based on latitude, the design of flat plate heaters can benefit from extensive amount of research on the topic of natural convection in inclined cavities. More than half-century of exploration on inclined cavities has witnessed added activity particularly in the last three decades. Despite this consistent research, efforts to apply the outcomes to the flat plate collectors have been few and collectors reported in the literature appear to be deficient in embedding the knowledge into the design parameters. For an ICS type heater, natural convection studies gain even more weight as the apparatus is functionally an assembly of two natural convection cavities: an air cavity (space between the absorber and cover plates) and a water cavity (water storage tank). An extensive review of previous studies on inclined cavities relevant to flat plate collectors has been complied and discussed. Experimental tests of the ICS heater have been conducted for controlled heat flux up to 400 W. The thermal performance of the heater is recorded experimentally at angles 0–60° from horizontal, in 15° intervals. CFD analysis is also carried out for the same and is found to be in good agreement with previous studies. It was found that for any given constant value of heat flux, the performance of the heater is a strong function of the angle of inclination. The optimum configuration of the heater for Edinburgh conditions (latitude 55°55′N) is also evaluated. The present study also covers the convective behavior inside the water tank, which has been neglected in the past. A step-by-step build-up approach is adopted to resolve water tank behavior as its treatment as a simple natural convention cavity is invalid. This article would serve as a design guide for developing heaters tailored for a specific geographical location.
