Family members' care expectations, care perceptions, and satisfaction with advanced cancer care: results of a multi-site pilot study.

Abstract: Psychometric properties of assessment tools designed for use with English-speaking family members of advanced cancer patients in different care settings and different geographic locations were evaluated in this study. The robustness of the theoretical framework guiding the study and the factors identified with care satisfaction were also tested. Seventy-two family members drawn equally from medical hospital units, palliative care units, and home care programs in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba participated. Instruments used included the F-Care Expectations Scale, F-Care Perceptions Scale, FAMCARE Scale, and the General Functioning Scale of the Family Assessment Device. All four tools yielded acceptable reliability estimates. Discrepancy theory predicted family care satisfaction in a highly significant manner (p < 0.0001). Family members of patients who had been diagnosed for longer than two years had more positive perceptions of palliative care than did family members of patients diagnosed for less than two years (p = 0.05). Older family members reported better family functioning than younger family members (p < 0.001). Spouses reported less discrepancy between care expectations and perceptions than did other relatives (p < 0.05).

Abstract: Background and aim Strength and power are crucial components to excelling in all contact sports; and understanding how a player’s strength and power levels fluctuate in response to various resistance training loads is of great interest, as it will inevitably dictate the loading parameters throughout a competitive season. This is a systematic review of training, maintenance and detraining studies, focusing on the development, retention and decay rates of strength and power measures in elite rugby union, rugby league and American football players.

Evidence-Based Supplements for the Enhancement of Athletic Performance

Abstract: A strong foundation in physical conditioning and sport-specific experience, in addition to a bespoke and periodized training and nutrition program, are essential for athlete development. Once these underpinning factors are accounted for, and the athlete reaches a training maturity and competition level where marginal gains determine success, a role may exist for the use of evidence-based performance supplements. However, it is important that any decisions surrounding performance supplements are made in consideration of robust information that suggests the use of a product is safe, legal, and effective. The following review focuses on the current evidence-base for a number of common (and emerging) performance supplements used in sport. The supplements discussed here are separated into three categories based on the level of evidence supporting their use for enhancing sports performance: (1) established (caffeine, creatine, nitrate, beta-alanine, bicarbonate); (2) equivocal (citrate, phosphate, carnitine); and (3) developing. Within each section, the relevant performance type, the potential mechanisms of action, and the most common protocols used in the supplement dosing schedule are summarized.

Wine Tourism — A Thirst for Knowledge?

Abstract: Wine tourism is a growing segment of the tourism industry. Wine tourists are not a homogeneous group, but seek differing components of the overall wine tourism experience. This research evaluates their demand for an educational element in the overall process, within Australia. Personal surveys were carried out in two wine regions in Western Australia. Respondents were questioned on their previous experience of wine education, the possibilities for learning at the cellar door, the benefits of wine education, and how far their expectations for wine education had been met. The research yielded findings from which broad visitor profiles of the Western Australian wine tourist can be constructed, as well as general conclusions on the provision of wine education at the cellar door. Some variation between responses from the two regions are also reported.
