TL;DR: In this paper, a field study of the Lutong (Presbytis cristatus) was conducted in Malaya, where they were observed for more than 1000 hours and were found to be markedly territorial and only one control male lives in each troop and he actively defends the territory against incursions by other lutong males.
Abstract: A field study of the Lutong, (Presbytis cristatus) was conducted in Malaya. Lutong troops were observed for more than 1000 hours and were found to be markedly territorial. Only one control male lives in each troop and he actively defends the territory against incursions by other lutong males. Each troop moves slowly through its territory feeding and resting and comes into frequent visual contact with adjacent troops. Each troop is a well organized social unit but only the control males show consistent hostility to one another when troops meet. Grooming, play, sexual responses, maternal behavior and agonistic episodes are described as well as travel, feeding and diurnal patterns. These patterns appear similar to those reported in other Presbytis species, but contrast markedly with macaque and baboon reports. Differences in behavior between species of Presbytis do not exceed differences reported in the same species by different observers in different areas.

TL;DR: The activation of phosphorylase in cardiac muscle can be the consequence of one of the following events: (a) the activation of phosphorus kinase as a result of a rise in cyclic AMP concentration; (b) an increase in the catalytic activity of phosphORYlase kinaseAs a result in the concentration of Ca++ available to the enzyme; or (c) a combination of these two mechanisms.
Abstract: The effect of epinephrine on the biochemical sequence of events leading to the activation of glycogen phosphorylase was studied in the isolated, perfused rat heart. In arrested preparations, perfused with a medium either devoid of Ca++ or containing a depolarizing concentration of K+, the epinephrine-induced activation of phosphorylase was markedly diminished. In the absence of Ca++, however, the epinephrine-induced rise in cyclic adenosine 39,59-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) concentration and the activation of phosphorylase kinase were not greatly altered. This suggested that the effect of omission of Ca++ occurred at the phosphorylase b to a conversion step. The effect of epinephrine on phosphorylase activation was blocked simultaneously with the cessation of contraction following perfusion with a Ca++-deficient medium. The store of Ca++ required for the maintenance of contractile activity appeared to be similar to that necessary for the conversion of phosphorylase b to a. Elevation of Ca++ in the perfusion medium resulted in activation of phosphorylase but not of phosphorylase kinase; nor was there an increase in cyclic AMP concentration. This observation also suggested that Ca++ is required for the catalytic activity of phosphorylase kinase. In the heart depolarized with K+, only a small and transient increase in cyclic AMP concentration occurred in response to epinephrine. Activation of phosphorylase kinase was considerably less than that observed in the beating heart. This suggested that an excess of K+ interfered with the action of epinephrine at a site at or before adenyl cyclase. Thus the activation of phosphorylase in cardiac muscle can be the consequence of one of the following events: (a) the activation of phosphorylase kinase as a result of a rise in cyclic AMP concentration; (b) an increase in the catalytic activity of phosphorylase kinase as a result of an increase in the concentration of Ca++ available to the enzyme; or (c) a combination of these two mechanisms.

TL;DR: The results are consistent with the hypothesis that the effect of catecholamines on cardiac phosphorylase is mediated through an action of cyclic AMP on phosphoryLase kinase.
Abstract: The concentration of cyclic 3',5'-adenosine monophosphate (cyclic AMP) and the activities of phosphorylase kinase and phosphorylase were determined in biopsy samples from dog hearts and in whole rat hearts frozen in situ. Cyclic AMP was measured by the activation of muscle phosphorylase kinase employing a preincubation at 0° to improve the sensitivity of the assay. Dog heart phosphorylase kinase was measured on extracts of homogenates by comparing the activity of the enzyme at pH 6.0 to that at 8.2. Epinephrine markedly increased the activity at pH 6.0 at a dose that did not significantly elevate the percentage of phosphorylase α. The time course of the change in kinase activity was consistent with the hypothesis that activation of this enzyme was necessary for time formation of cardiac phosphorylase α. No significant increase in the concentration of cyclic AMP was demonstrable in the dog heart at a dose of epinephrine that produced a marked inotropic effect. The possibility of an artifact in the biopsy technique was suggested by the finding that a rapid increase in cyclic AMP occurred in rat hearts frozen in situ , but not when samples were excised and frozen. Phosphorylase kinase activity increased as rapidly as did the cyclic AMP concentration and before any change in the phosphorylase activity occurred. Pronethalol blocked the epinephrine-induced rise in the cyclic AMP concentration. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the effect of catecholamines on cardiac phosphorylase is mediated through an action of cyclic AMP on phosphorylase kinase. Abstract: Rabbit anti-mouse thymocyte serum suppressed host cell-mediated responsiveness to intravenously administered vaccinia virus, thereby augmenting the morbidity and mortality of this infection. It did not affect either humoral antibody or interferon production in response to vaccinia virus. No effects were noted on primary or secondary immunity to intracerebral virus inoculation.

TL;DR: The presence of metastases from a tumor which is most often considered benign indicates the importance of thorough preoperative studies and possible routine retroperitoneal exploration and lymphadenectomy.
Abstract: Sertoli cell tumors are among the most common canine testicular tumors. They may be associated with hyperestrogenism and they sometimes produce distant metastases. Human testicular supporting tissue tumors are rare. There are only a few publications of human testicular Sertoli cell tumors and only occasional distant metastases have been reported. An 8-year-old boy had had a testicular mass for 3 years. Retroperitoneal lymph nodes were enlarged. A left inguinal orchiectomy was followed by- bilateral retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy. The primary tumor and the metastases were histologically similar to canine testicular Sertoli cell tumor. The patient is free of disease 2 years after initial therapy. The presence of metastases from a tumor which is most often considered benign indicates the importance of thorough preoperative studies and possible routine retroperitoneal exploration and lymphadenectomy.

TL;DR: The results in 13 patients treated by radiation therapy alone and in combination with surgery and chemotherapy indicate that this tumor is moderately radiosensitive and can be locally controlled for significant periods of time with radiation therapy.
Abstract: Twenty‐four cases of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma seen over a period of 16 years were reviewed and the effectiveness of radiation therapy on the primary tumor was studied. The results in 13 patients treated by radiation therapy alone and in combination with surgery and chemotherapy indicate that this tumor is moderately radiosensitive and can be locally controlled for significant periods of time with radiation therapy. Many patients whose primary lesion has been controlled will die of metastatic disease. In spite of this fact the three patients in this series who survived more than 5 years justify an optimistic approach to the treatment of this disease.

TL;DR: It appears that genital infections with HVH in children can be either venereally or non-venereally transmitted and the physician should use caution in his judgment as to the way in which a herpetic genital infection was acquired in his patient.
Abstract: Five cases of genital infections with Herpesvirus hominis (HVH) in 7- to 12-year-old girls and one case in a 3-year-old boy have been observed over a 3-year period. HVH type 1 was isolated from the genital lesions and mouth in both the boy, who had no oral lesions, and in an 8-year-old girl with associated gingivostomatitis. The boy showed serological evidence of a type 1 HVH reinfection and the girl showed evidence of a primary type 1 infection. Laboratory studies on the other four girls confirmed a primary type 2 HVH infection. On the basis of the virological, serological, and epidemiological information, it appears that genital infections with HVH in children can be either venereally or non-venereally transmitted. The physician should therefore use caution in his judgment as to the way in which a herpetic genital infection was acquired in his patient.

TL;DR: On the basis of present information, the development of a more ideal sympathomimetic amine for the treatment of congestive heart failure appears to be feasible.
Abstract: Sympathomimetic amines that increase cardiac output and decrease total peripheral resistance may be useful in the treatment of certain patients with congestive heart failure. The pharmacologic actions of three such amines, epinephrine, isoproterenol and dopamine, are presented and clinical experience obtained with these amines is reviewed. The myocardial actions of sympathomimetic amines are compared with those produced by digitalis. On the basis of present information, the development of a more ideal sympathomimetic amine for the treatment of congestive heart failure appears to be feasible.

TL;DR: Evaluation of the pock size of freshly isolated strains of HVH which have had no prior egg passage could serve as a rapid presumptive test for ascertaining the antigenic type of HvH strains.
Abstract: SummaryStrains of herpesvirus hominis (HVH) which were recovered primarily from genital sites and which belonged to antigenic type 2 were found to produce large pocks (av diameter > 0.5 mm) on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of embryonated eggs. Type 1 HVH strains isolated primarily from nongenital sites produced small pocks (av diameter < 0.5 mm) on the CAM. Histological examinations of the infected CAM have revealed that type 1 HVH strains produce ectodermal proliferation with little subectodermal involvement. Type 2 HVH strains involve ectodermal, mesodermal and endodermal layers with marked necrosis, hemorrhages and inflammatory cells. Multinucleated giant cells are more readily found in CAM infected with type 2 strains. The conflicting reports of other workers regarding pock size and histological findings after infection with various HVH strains may be explained by their multiple passages in eggs and other selective factors. Also included is a comparison of CAM infection with type 1 and 2 HVH and ...

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that there is no serological evidence associating the parasites or immunological responses studied with the clinical syndrome of chronic primary myocardial disease.
Abstract: Heart immunofluorescent autoantibody tests, the complement fixation test for Chagas' disease, the hemagglutination test for toxoplasmosis, and the latex flocculation test for rheumatoid disease were compared in 34 patients with primary myocardial disease and their paired control subjects. There was no difference in the incidence of elevated titers or in the actual titer levels between the group with primary myocardial disease and the control group for any of these tests. This study is limited in that it gives no information about an agent or mechanism for primary myocardial disease which is no longer demonstrable by serological test, particularly since the patients with primary myocardial disease were studied, at an average, 6 years after onset of symptoms. It is also possible that agents or mechanisms other than those included in this study may be causative of primary myocardial disease. We have, however, demonstrated that there is no serological evidence associating the parasites or immunological respon...

TL;DR: A myocardial abscess that partially obstructed the right ventricular outflow tract developed in a 36 year old woman with tuberculous lymphadenopathy and it is believed that it most likely was tuberculus in origin.
Abstract: A myocardial abscess that partially obstructed the right ventricular outflow tract developed in a 36 year old woman with tuberculous lymphadenopathy. The clinically suspected hemodynamic alterations were confirmed by cardiac catheterization and right ventricular angiocardiography. The patient had an excellent response to isoniazid and aminosalicyclic acid and to surgical drainage of the abscess. Although a causative organism was not isolated from the myocardial abscess, we believe that it most likely was tuberculous in origin.
