Abstract: We study the statistics of a grafted polymer brush, consisting of a set of monodisperse chains in solution, each attached irreversibly by one end to a flat surface. We use a self-consistent field method, valid in the limit of weak excluded volume and at moderately high surface coverage. Exploiting the fact that the chains are highly stretched, we map the problem (in the long-chain limit) onto one involving the motion of classical particles in an equal-time potential, which we can solve exactly. The resulting density profile for the brush takes a parabolic form.

Abstract: The development of surrogate mixtures that represent gasoline combustion behavior is reviewed. Combustion chemistry behavioral targets that a surrogate should accurately reproduce, particularly for emulating homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) operation, are carefully identified. Both short and long term research needs to support development of more robust surrogate fuel compositions are described. Candidate component species are identified and the status of present chemical kinetic models for these components and their interactions are discussed. Recommendations are made for the initial components to be included in gasoline surrogates for near term development. Components that can be added to refine predictions and to include additional behavioral targets are identified as well. Thermodynamic, thermochemical and transport properties that require further investigation are discussed.

Abstract: The continuous-time random walk of Montroll and Weiss has been modified by Scher and Lax to include a coupled spatial-temporal memory. We treat novel cases for the random walk and the corresponding generalized master equation when combinations of both spatial, and temporal moments of the memory are infinite. The asymptotic properties of the probability distribution for being at any lattice site as a function of time and its variance are calculated. The resulting behavior includes localized, diffusive, wavelike, and Levy's stable laws for the appropriate scaled variable. We show that an infinite mean waiting time can lead to long time diffusive behavior, while a finite mean waiting time is not sufficient to ensure the same.

Abstract: Fischer-Tropsch wax is converted to a lubricating oil having a high viscosity index and a low pour point by first hydrotreating the wax under relatively severe conditions and thereafter hydroisomerizing the hydrotreated wax in the presence of hydrogen on a particular fluorided Group VIII metal-on-alumina catalyst. The hydroisomerate is then dewaxed to produce a premium lubricating oil base stock.
