Abstract: Worldwide, domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) are one of the most common carnivoran species in natural areas and their populations are still increasing. Dogs have been shown to impact wildlife populations negatively, and their occurrence can alter the abundance, behavior, and activity patterns of native species. However, little is known about abundance and density of the free-ranging dogs that use protected areas. Here, we used camera trap data with an open-robust design mark–recapture model to estimate the number of dogs that used protected areas in Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We estimated the time period these dogs used the protected areas, and explored factors that influenced the probability of continued use (e.g., season, mammal richness, proportion of forest), while accounting for variation in detection probability. Dogs in the studied system were categorized as rural free-ranging, and their abundance varied widely across protected areas (0–73 individuals). Dogs used protected areas near human houses for longer periods (e.g., >50% of sampling occasions) compared to more distant areas. We found no evidence that their probability of continued use varied with season or mammal richness. Dog detection probability decreased linearly among occasions, possibly due to the owners confining their dogs after becoming aware of our presence. Comparing our estimates to those for native carnivoran, we found that dogs were three to 85 times more abundant than ocelots (Leopardus pardalis), two to 25 times more abundant than puma (Puma concolor), and approximately five times more abundant than the crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous). Combining camera trapping data with modern mark–recapture methods provides important demographic information on free-ranging dogs that can guide management strategies to directly control dogs' abundance and ranging behavior.

Abstract: The D. serido superspecies is a complex mosaic of populations distributed over a vast part of South America and showing various degrees of genetical divergence. We have analyzed its chromosomal constitution in 16 new localities of southeastern and southern Brazil. Both the metaphase and salivary gland chromosomes show a sharp split of these populations in two groups. Four populations, fixed for inversion 2e8 and showing the type I karyotype, represent the southwestern limit of D. serido type B, which inhabits the Cerrado in central-western Brazil. The remaining populations are homozygous for 2x7, an inversion also fixed in the Caatinga populations of northeastern Brazil. However, their karyotype, in those populations analyzed, belong to a different type (V) from that of the Caatinga populations. Populations in this second group are polymorphic for five inversions on chromosome 2 plus another on chromosome 5 and show considerable interpopulation differentiation. The breakpoints of chromosome 2 inversions are described and the inversion loops of several heterokaryotypes are presented. Biogeographical information suggests that there are clear ecological differences between the two groups of populations as well as among the populations within the second group. Thepossible role of host plants in promoting the genetic divergence among the D. serido populations is discussed.

Abstract: Bees are the most important diurnal pollinators of angiosperms. In several groups of bees a nocturnal/crepuscular habit was developed, yet, little is known about their role in pollination and whether some plants are adapted specifically to these bees. We used a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the reproductive biology and to understand the role of nocturnal/crepuscular bees in pollination of Campomanesia phaea (Myrtaceae), popularly named cambuci. We studied the floral biology and the breeding system of C. phaea. We collected the floral visitors and tested the pollinators’ effectiveness. We also determined the floral scents released at night and during day time, and studied behavioural responses of crepuscular/nocturnal bees towards these scents. The flowers of cambuci were self-incompatible and had pollen as the only resource for flower visitors. The anthesis lasted around 14 hours, beginning at 04:30 at night. The flowers released 14 volatile compounds, mainly aliphatics and aromatics. We collected 52 species of floral visitors, mainly bees. Nocturnal and crepuscular bees (four species) were among the most frequent species and the only effective pollinators. In field bioassays performed at night, nocturnal/crepuscular bees were attracted by a synthetic scent blend consisting of the six most abundant compounds. This study describes the first scent-mediated pollination system between a plant and its nocturnal bee pollinators. Further, C. phaea has several floral traits that do not allow classification into other nocturnal pollination syndromes (e.g. pollinator attraction already before sunrise with pollen as the only reward), however it is a plant specifically adapted to nocturnal bees. Abstract: Natural dietary antioxidants are extensively studied for their ability to protect cells from damage to DNA, protein, and lipids induced by antitumor agents or radiation that leads to the generation of free radical in normal cells in vivo and in vitro. Curcumin is a natural antioxidant known to possess therapeutic properties and has been reported to scavenge free radicals and to inhibit clastogenesis in mammalian cells. However, curcumin has been reported to induce a significant increase in the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. To investigate whether the clastogenic activity of curcumin in CHO cells in culture can be ascribed to a pro-oxidant behavior, mediated by free radical generation, experiments were carried out with the combination of curcumin (15 microg/ml) and thiourea (10, 20, or 40 microg/ml), a potent hydroxyl radical scavenger. The results showed that the clastogenic action of curcumin was statistically decreased in a dose-dependent manner in the presence of thiourea. These data have shown that curcumin-induced chromosomal damage in CHO cells can be mediated by hydroxyl radical generation in the present experimental conditions. Teratogenesis Carcinog.
