TL;DR: The low nucleotide diversity found for the HLA-E coding and 3'UTR in worldwide populations suggests that the Hla-E gene is in fact a conserved gene, which might be a consequence of its key role in the modulation of the immune system.
Abstract: The human leukocyte antigen-E (HLA-E) locus is a human major histocompatibility complex (MHC) gene associated with immune-modulation and suppression of the immune response by the interaction with specific natural killer (NK) and T cell receptors (TCRs). It is considered one of the most conserved genes of the human MHC; however, this low nucleotide variability seems to be a consequence of the scarce number of studies focusing on this subject. In this manuscript we assessed the nucleotide variability at the HLA-E coding and 3' untranslated regions (3'UTRs) in Brazil and in the populations from the 1000Genomes Consortium. Twenty-eight variable sites arranged into 33 haplotypes were detected and most of these haplotypes (98.2%) are encoding one of the two HLA-E molecules found worldwide, E*01:01 and E*01:03. Moreover, three worldwide spread haplotypes, associated with the coding alleles E*01:01:01, E*01:03:01 and E*01:03:02, account for 85% of all HLA-E haplotypes, suggesting that they arose early before human speciation. In addition, the low nucleotide diversity found for the HLA-E coding and 3'UTR in worldwide populations suggests that the HLA-E gene is in fact a conserved gene, which might be a consequence of its key role in the modulation of the immune system.

TL;DR: Reforestation allows the colonization of soil and litter fauna in a biased manner and is consistent with both empirical data and theoretical predictions from the specialized literature, although the subject has been poorly explored until now.
Abstract: The recovery of soil ecological processes during the restoration of tropical forests is greatly influenced by arthropods that live in the litter and soil. However, these communities present complex dynamics, and their colonization patterns are not well understood. In this study, we examined the response patterns of litter and soil arthropods to the ecosystem regeneration process by assessing reforestation sites from two regions of Sao Paulo State, Brazil, and we compared the data obtained from these sites with data from mature forests. We assessed the arthropod communities using similarity indices and high-level taxa abundance, with the level of forest succession and the locations of the restoration areas as factors. Forest succession correlated with the species composition as communities from the reforestation sites gradually became more similar to communities from the mature forests, while their quantitative patterns were minimally related. Forest maturation positively affected the richness of the litter community and the abundance of some minor groups, such as Protura, Diplura, and Symphyla. The region influenced the species composition but did not influence the manner in which the communities changed during the maturation process. We also found a convergent soil colonization pattern as arthropod communities from different sites became more similar during forest succession. This finding is consistent with both empirical data and theoretical predictions from the specialized literature, although the subject has been poorly explored until now. We conclude that reforestation allows the colonization of soil and litter fauna in a biased manner.

TL;DR: Energetic analysis proved that the studied complexes are stable and allowed the understanding of the effect of the electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups in their stabilization, which can be partially attributed to the hydrogen bond.
Abstract: The hydrogen bonds formed between the hydroperoxyl radical and formic, acetic, and trifluoroacetic acids were characterized using geometric, energetic, and electronic parameters through calculations done with the UB3LYP/6-311++G (3df,3pd) and UB3LYP/EPR-III methods. The wave functions were analyzed through the natural bond orbital, natural steric analysis, natural resonance theory, and atoms in molecules methods. The energy decomposition method proposed by Xantheas was used. The vibrational frequencies and the intensity of the O-H stretching bands, as well as the spin densities, were compared with experimental evidence. The results allowed the characterization of the hydrogen bonds formed in the complexation of the acids with the hydroperoxyl radical. Complexation led to significant alterations in the equilibrium geometry of the monomers. Energetic analysis proved that the studied complexes are stable and allowed the understanding of the effect of the electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups in their stabilization. The alterations in the electronic structure of the monomers after complexation led to an increase in the resonance of the carboxyl group, which can be partially attributed to the hydrogen bond.
