Abstract: In order to investigate whether early malnutrition causes lasting changes in the reactivity to anxiolytic drugs, rat dams during lactation (21 days) and pups after weaning until the 49th day of life were fed on 8% casein diet (M rats), while their well-nourished controls received 25% casein (W rats). From day 50 on all animals ate the same balanced diet. Experiments started on the 91st day. Rats deprived for 22 hours drank water containing either 1.8% or 2.7% sodium chloride for 30 min in a test chamber, total intake being measured. Dose-effect curves for diazepam (0.5–5.0 mg/kg, IP), as well as for the nonbezodiazepine anxiolytics ipsapirone (0.5–5.0 mg/kg), ritanserin (0.05–1.0 mg/kg) and isamoltane (2.5–20.0 mg/kg) were determined in M as well as in W rats. Diazepam and ipsapirone dose-dependently released drinking suppressed by either salt concentration in W rats, but caused little or no effect in M rats. Ritanserin and isamoltane were ineffective in both groups. These and previously reported results show that early protein malnutrition markedly reduces anticonflict effects of anxiolytics, indicating long-lasting impairment of neuronal systems underlying emotional behavior.

Abstract: Anthropogenic activities are the main cause of habitat loss and fragmentation, which directly affects biodiversity. Disruption in landscape connectivity among populations may affect complex interactions between species and ecosystem functions, such as pollination and seed dispersal, and ultimately result in secondary extinctions. Urbanization, one of the most intense forms of landscapes changes, has been reported to negatively affect bird and plant diversity. Still, little is known about the effects of urban landscapes on interaction networks. We investigated the relationship between urban landscape structure and plant-frugivore networks at different spatial scales. Coupling interaction data from urban areas and a model selection approach, we evaluated which landscape factors best explained the variation in urban networks properties. Our results indicate that urbanization decreases bird richness, mainly through the loss of habitat specialist species, which results in networks being composed mainly of birds well adapted to urban dwelling. We found that interaction evenness, a measure of homogeneity of interaction distribution between species, increases with urbanization. This is due to the strong dominance that generalist birds had in network composition because they foraged on all available fruits, including exotic plants. The ensuing homogenization of interactions can reduce the resilience of networks and affect the efficiency of ecosystems functions. Thus, urbanization plans should consider the proportion and distribution of green areas within cities, coupling human and ecosystem wellbeing.

Abstract: The complexes cis-[Ru(phen)2(Apy)2]2+, Apy = 4-aminopyridine and 3,4-aminopyridine, are stable in aqueous solution with strong visible absorption. They present emission in the visible region with long lifetime that accumulates in the cytoplasm of Neuro2A cell line without appreciable cytotoxicity. The complexes also serve as mixed-type reversible inhibitors of human AChE and BuChE with high active site contact. cis-[Ru(phen)2(3,4Apy)2]2+ competes efficiently with DMPO by the OH• radical. Luminescence using fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) enables real-time imaging of the conformational changes of the self-aggregation of Aβ with incubation of complexes (0–24 h) in phosphate buffer at micromolar concentrations. By this technique, we identified protofibrills in the self-assembly of Aβ1–40 and globular structures in the short fragment Aβ15–21 in aqueous solution.
