Abstract: In a number of mechanical problems, systems of differential equations with periodic coefficients have to be considered, which, in general, possess not only linear but also nonlinear terms. In this paper, the first order instability region of the Mathieu equation is examined when additional nonlinear terms are present. These terms can be of the damping or restoring type.

TL;DR: The body is stuck to the chain of language and is mortified by the signifier as it is taken to the symbolic register as discussed by the authors, and the body belongs to the three registers: the imaginary space, the symbolic language and the enjoyment a real body can have.
Imaginario. Lalingua. Gozo. ABSTRACT The imaginary body is not an appanage of the human body because as res extensia it can be measured and weighed as any object of the phenomenal world: body, chair, table, pencil. Similarly, one can describe its characteristics and attributes as the ones in any other object. Therefore, the human body is another object of the phenomenal world. The symbolic body is not necessarily the living body because the corpse also has these characteristics. The body is stuck to the chain of language and is mortified by the signifier as it is taken to the symbolic register. The signifier maps the body and it writes in it both the history and the hysterical anatomy of each one. We might as well call it a hystoerical body. However, this body can be dead or alive, quiet in the silence of the death drive or vibrating with Eros. In order to be alive it also needs to be a body that enjoys itself. Thus, the body belongs to the three registers: the imaginary space, the symbolic language and the enjoyment a real body can have. KEYWORDS: Body. Imaginary. Lalangue. Enjoyment (jouissance).

TL;DR: This architecture is constructed by adding the functionalities required in order to accomplish the extraction of rules from a database and enables the standard and efficient construction of data mining applications for rule extraction.
Abstract: One of the main obstacles in applying data mining techniques to large, realworld databases is the lack of integration between applications and the database management system where the collection of target data is stored. In these applications, data are obtained by applying an SQL query to that database and then stored in flat files for further processing. As a result, these applications cannot benefit from previously implemented functionalities of the accessed database management system. In this paper, we present an architecture for rule extraction applications development. This architecture is constructed by adding the functionalities required in order to accomplish the extraction of rules from a database. Moreover, this architecture enables the standard and efficient construction of data mining applications for rule extraction. TL;DR: The addition of non-radioactive methionine did not interfere with the uptake and excretion of radioactivity from choline-Me-14C and the occurrence of a new pathway for the utilization of choline in yeasts is suggested.
Abstract: A choline-requiring strain of Torulopsis pintolopesii when growing on choline-methyl-14C or choline-methyl-3H excretes the radioactivity incorporated in the first 24–48 h of incubation up to ca. 85–95% of the radioactivity added at the beginning of the incubation. The addition of non-radioactive methionine did not interfere with the uptake and excretion of radioactivity from choline-Me-14C. Radioactive methyl group of methionine previously incorporated by growing cells of T. pintolopesii on varying concentrations of choline was not excreted in appreciable amounts. No evidence was obtained for the oxidation of choline to betaine, degradation to trimethylamine, or net incorporation of labelled choline into lecithin. The occurrence of a new pathway for the utilization of choline in yeasts is suggested. The requirement of choline by T. pintolopesii is explained tentatively by the formation and excretion of a compound containing the carbon and hydrogen atoms from the methyl groups of choline and whose chemical structure still under study, may comprise a heteroside containing mannitol as the polyhydroxylated moiety.

TL;DR: In this article, the inversion of the Lagrange-Dirichlet theorem has been proved under very restrictive conditions, and it seems physically obvious that the equilibrium is unstable in case of a maximum of the potential energy.
Abstract: The theorem of Lagrange-Dirichlet states that the equilibrium of a discrete conservative holonomous mechanical system is stable if the potential energy assumes a minimum in this position. It seems physically obvious that the equilibrium is unstable in case of a maximum of the potential energy. This question was examined by Liapunov and Chetayev, but until now the inversion of the theorem of Lagrange has only been proved under very restrictive conditions.

TL;DR: In this article, a new technique to determine the reactivity ratios for monomers is described based on vapor phase chromatography and can be used for any volatile monomer, regardless of chemical composition or constitution.
Abstract: A new technique to determine the reactivity ratios for monomers is described It is based on vapor-phase chromatography and can be used for any volatile monomer A new simplified equation was deduced which permits the direct use of the retention times to obtain the pair r1r2 The method is suggested for use in determination of the molar ratios of the chemical units in the polymer chain, regardless of chemical composition or constitution The simplicity of this technique allows its use for monomer–polymer systems composed of any number of volatile monomers The validity of this method was checked by using the pair methyl methacrylate–styrene This technique is also being applied to the study of kinetics in polymerizations, since it allows the measurements of several samples taken from a single experiment

TL;DR: This work proposes a knowledge based approach to the fragmentation phase of the distributed design of object oriented databases, and shows a rule-based implementation of an analysis algorithm from a previous work and proposes some ideas towards the use of Inductive Logic Programming to perform a knowledge discovery/revision process using the authors' set of rules as background knowledge.
Abstract: The performance of applications on Object Oriented Database Management Systems (OODBMSs) is strongly affected by Distributed Design, which reduces irrelevant data accessed by applications and data exchange among sites. In an OO environment, the Distributed Design is a very complex task, and an open research problem. In this work we propose a knowledge based approach to the fragmentation phase of the distributed design of object oriented databases. In this approach, we will show a rule-based implementation of an analysis algorithm from our previous work and propose some ideas towards the use of Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) to perform a knowledge discovery/revision process using our set of rules as background knowledge. The objective of the work is to uncover some previously unknown issues to be considered in the distributed design process. Our main objective here is to show the viability of performing a revision process in order to obtain better and better fragmentation algorithms. We do not intend to propose the best fragmentation algorithm ever possible. We concentrate here on the process of revising a DDOODB algorithm through Knowledge Discovery techniques, rather than only obtaining a final optimal algorithm. TL;DR: Ferreira et al. as discussed by the authors investigated the importance of open spaces within the urban fabric, and consider the ways in which the history and aspirations of the local community become meaningfully woven into these spaces.
Abstract: This paper explores how outdoor performances actively define and create the essential character of open spaces in Brazil, a country known for its overwhelming abundance of outdoor life. We investigate the importance of open spaces within the urban fabric, and consider the ways in which the history and aspirations of the local community become meaningfully woven into these spaces. We chose an open space, or largo 3 , in the city of Rio de Janeiro called Largo da Carioca, which embodies the relation between collective memory and appropriation. We then consider how the Largo has consistently been used as an arena of performance despite the intense urban changes and movement of people over the last 50 years. As a way of grasping the dynamic of the activities of the Largo da Carioca we adopted two approaches: historical-evolutive and participant observation. The first concerns the evolution of the urban space of Largo da Carioca and the background of outdoor performances as a way of introducing the popular arts of Rio de Janeiro, and as a way of connecting our theoretical analysis to the field research. In the second approach we use tools and methods from ethnographic research such as field annotations, direct interviews and visual resources, like photographs and video-shooting, so as to fulfill and complement our work. We argue that the urban essence of these performances is related to the ‘inviting’ conditions of this particular urban site and to its (in)formal structures, uses and regular activities. It invites – because of its openness, formal and social largeness and amplitude – a singular melange of uses and appropriations through which the formal and social are amalgamated – for, as one informant said, it is ‘an open space of constant comings and goings’ (Igor Ferreira, 13/07/03).

TL;DR: In this paper, the generalized lever law is used to determine the amounts of the phases in a phase diagram for a 5-or higher component system, and the type of reaction (eutectic, quasiperitectic, and so forth) is determined.
Abstract: Construction of a complete phase diagram for a 5- (or higher-) component system is so timeconsuming as to be impractical at present. The usual type of information about the phases present, their compositions, and their amounts can be obtained for a particularC-component alloy by the present method:C is the number of components and may be as large as desired. The alloy is brought to an essentially equilibrium condition at the temperature of interest, and the compositions of the phases are determined by a suitable technique; for example, by electronbeam-microprobe analyses of the quenched specimen. The generalized lever law, in determinant form, is used to determine the amounts of the phases. Repetition of this analysis at a second temperature in the same phase region permits identification of the type of variant reaction (pseudoeutectic, and so forth) that is occurring. For invariant reactions, a technique such as quantitative metallography is employed to determine the amounts of the phases at an early and a late stage in the reaction. The type of reaction (eutectic, quasiperitectic, and so forth) can then be determined. From experimental data on alloy E an estimate can be made of two aspects of the behavior of a neighboring composition, alloy N; 1) liquidus temperature, and 2) invariant reaction. Thermodynamic procedures should permit useful extensions of the present method.
