Abstract: Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropical region: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropical carnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from 35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data were obtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including camera trapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated in this compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n = 79,343; 79.7%) but also includes non-detection data (n = 20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data (n = 43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute to macroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspectives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distribution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans and safeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combined with other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and related ecological processes within the Neotropics. There are no copyright restrictions and no restriction for using data from this data paper, as long as the data paper is cited as the source of the information used. We also request that users inform us of how they intend to use the data.

Abstract: Diamondoids are hydrogen-terminated nanosized diamond fragments that are present in petroleum crude oil at low concentrations. These fragments are found as oligomers of the smallest diamondoid, adamantane (C10H16). Due to their small size, diamondoids can be encapsulated into carbon nanotubes to form linear arrangements. We have investigated the encapsulation of diamondoids into single walled carbon nanotubes with diameters between 1.0 and 2.2 nm using fully atomistic simulations. We performed classical molecular dynamics and energy minimizations calculations to determine the most stable configurations. We observed molecular ordered phases (e.g. double, triple, 4-?and 5-stranded helices) for the encapsulation of adamantane, diamantane, and dihydroxy diamantane. Our results also indicate that the functionalization of diamantane with hydroxyl groups can lead to an improvement on the molecular packing factor when compared to non-functionalized compounds. Comparisons to hard-sphere models revealed differences, especially when more asymmetrical diamondoids were considered. For larger diamondoids (i.e., adamantane tetramers), we have not observed long-range ordering but only a tendency to form incomplete helical structures. Our calculations predict that thermally stable (at least up to room temperature) complex ordered phases of diamondoids can be formed through encapsulation into carbon nanotubes.

Abstract: Similarly to most breeding programs of native species, camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia (Kunt) McVaugh) improvement is also restricted, due to the scarcity of research results. In this situation, the prospection, collection and conservation of germplasm in genebanks ensure successful selection and breeding studies of the species. In this sense, the purpose of this study was the intraspecific characterization of the biometric variability in fruits of native camu-camu populations of the State of Roraima, in the northern Amazon region. Of 16 populations, 247 sub-samples were evaluated. Analyses were performed with the multivariate technique of principal components and hierarchical clustering, to determine the variables with highest intraspecific variability for the studied traits. The populations found in the lower Rio Branco region performed best for the studied traits, indicating the great potential of the region as a reservoir of promising subsamples for future breeding programs of the species in the northern Amazon.

The search for standards that guide the trade of these products is still portrayed as a future perspective, since there are significant differences in relation to honey from Apis mellifera and it often requires additional treatments.

Abstract: Morphological and taxonomic studies have proposed changing the circumscription of Acosmium, with the recognition of two additional genera, Leptolobium and Guianodendron. A study on seedling morphology of all accepted species of Acosmium s.str., five species of Leptolobium, and Guianodendron praeclarum is presented, aiming to evaluate the systematic value of these characters. Guianodendron has crypto-hypogeal reserve seedlings, while Acosmium and Leptolobium have phanero-epigeal seedlings with foliaceous cotyledons. The latter two genera are distinguishable from each other mainly by hypocotyl shape, ratio of hypocotyl length to epicotyl length, nyctinasty of leaflets and cotyledons, shape and venation of cotyledons, stipule and leaflet morphology, presence or absence of intercotyledonary glands, and presence of glands on other vegetative parts. In conclusion, seedling morphology data provide relevant systematic characters that support the proposed changes in the generic delimitation of Acosmium.
