Abstract: BACKGROUND The number of malaria cases in Roraima nearly tripled from 2016 to 2018. The capital, Boa Vista, considered a low-risk area for malaria transmission, reported an increasing number of autochthonous and imported cases. OBJECTIVES This study describes a spatial analysis on malaria cases in an urban region of Boa Vista, which sought to identify the autochthonous and imported cases and associated them with Anopheles habitats and the potential risk of local transmission. METHODS In a cross-sectional study at the Polyclinic Cosme e Silva, 520 individuals were interviewed and diagnosed with malaria by microscopic examination. Using a global positional system, the locations of malaria cases by type and origin and the breeding sites of anopheline vectors were mapped and the risk of malaria transmission was evaluated by spatial point pattern analysis. FINDINGS Malaria was detected in 57.5% of the individuals and there was a disproportionate number of imported cases (90.6%) linked to Brazilian coming from gold mining sites in Venezuela and Guyana. MAIN CONCLUSIONS The increase in imported malaria cases circulating in the west region of Boa Vista, where there are positive breeding sites for the main vectors, may represent a potential condition for increased autochthonous malaria transmission in this space.

Abstract: – This study evaluated the post-acidification, stability of anthocyanins and antioxidant activity in acai yogurts and fermented milks for 28 days of cold storage. For the determination of post-acidification and stability of the functional properties of acai yogurt (IA) and fermented milks (LFA), products stored at 4°C were evaluated on day 0 and every 7 days for pH, titratable acidity in lactic acid, instrumental color, anthocyanins and antioxidant activity by the DPPH free radical method. Acidification of both food matrixes was more evident between days 0 and 7 of evaluation. IA presented reduction in parameter L *, while chromaticity a * and b * of IA and LFA increased as the Acai pulp content increased; however, considering the evaluation period, it was found increase in L * and b * relating to anthocyanin degradation. Anthocyanins, as well as the antioxidant activity of IA and LFA, showed an increase in their values as the pulp content increased, but their concentrations reduced at the end of the storage period. IA and LFA can be considered excellent sources of antioxidants, being alternative to individuals not used to the consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Abstract: The association of wild grasses with diazotrophic bacteria in Brazilian biomes is poorly understood. The isolation and characterization of bacteria associated with wild grasses can contribute to understand the diazotrophic ecology as well as to identify bacteria with biotechnological applications. In this study, we isolated and characterized diazotrophic bacterial isolates from Oryza glumaepatula collected in Cerrado and Forest areas of the Amazon in Roraima State, Brazil. Healthy O. glumepatula plants were collected at five sampling sites at Forest and seven at Cerrado, respectively. The plants were collected at the Cerrado areas in September 2008 while the Forest plants were collected in June/2008 and April/2009. The plants and the soil adhering to the roots were transferred to pots and grown for 35 days in greenhouse conditions. During the harvest, the shoots and the roots were crushed separately in a saline solution; the suspension was diluted serially and inoculated in Petri dishes containing Dyg’s medium. All distinct bacterial colonies were purified in the same medium. The diazotrophic capacity of each bacterium in microaerophilic conditions was assessed in semisolid BMGM medium. In addition, the pellicles forming bacterial isolates were also evaluated by PCR amplification for nifH gene. The diversity of nifH+ bacteria was analyzed by Box-PCR fingerprinting. For selected strains, the growth promoting capacity of O. sativa as a model plant was also evaluated. A total of 992 bacterial isolates were obtained. Fiftyone bacteria were able to form pellicles in the semisolid medium and 38 also positively amplified the 360bp nifH gene fragment. Among the 38 nifH+ isolates, 24 were obtained from the shoots, while 14 originated from the roots. The Box-PCR profiles showed that the bacterial isolates obtained in this study presented a low similarity with the reference strains belonging to the Herbaspirillum, Azospirillum and Burkholderia genus. The growthpromoting ability was confirmed for at least five isolates. For these bacteria, the root and shoot growing results showed higher increases when compared to those observed in plants inoculated with the evaluated reference strains. These results indicate that O. glumaepatula is colonized by a high diverse diazotrophic community in the Brazilian Amazon. Further investigations are now being carried out to determine the taxonomic positions of these isolates and their growth promoting mechanisms.

Abstract: RESUMO O clado Vatairea sensu Mansano et al. (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae) e constituido pelos generos Luetzelburgia, Sweetia, Vatairea e Vataireopsis, dentre os quais informacoes sobre plântulas sao restritas a Vatairea e Vataireopsis. Neste trabalho, plântulas de Luetzelburgia guaissara Toledo e Sweetia fruticosa Spreng. sao descritas e ilustradas. Luetzelburgia guaissara possui plântulas fanero-epigeo-armazenadoras, enquanto que Sweetia fruticosa apresenta plântulas cripto-hipogeo-armazenadoras. E apresentada uma breve revisao da morfologia de plântulas dos representantes do clado Vatairea, bem como uma chave de plântulas para a identificacao de seus generos. A variacao dos tipos morfologicos e de alguns caracteres como numero de foliolos, presenca de catafilos, projecao basal no colo e tipo de nictinastia foliolar apresenta relevância sistematica para distincao de generos neste clado.

Abstract: Titanium dioxide powders were synthesized by the sol-gel process using titanium tetrabutoxide as the precursor. The syntheses were performed in saturated aqueous solutions of KCl, CaCl2 ,N iCl 2 ,C oCl 2 and MnCl2, and in dimethyl- formamaide (DMF) and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solutions. The obtained X-ray diffraction patterns show that all samples were crystalline (anatase phase) with some minor amounts of a brookite phase. It is worth noting that the anatase phase was ob- tained independent of any previous or further treatment of the synthesized powder, such as hydrothermal or heat treatment. For the titanium dioxide powders synthe- sized in saturated aqueous solution of metal chlorides (mean crystallite size = 11 nm), the anatase-rutile transition occurred in the range 455-570 °C, depending on the considered sample, as verified by DTA analysis. In the powders synthesized in DMF or DMSO solutions (means crystallite size = 6 nm), the same structural transi- tion occurred at 485°C.
