TL;DR: In this paper, a spectroscopic study performed on Eu(III and Tb(III) complexes dispersed on polysiloxane sol-gel glasses is reported, and it is verified that the amount of complex employed, the complex itself, the tridimensional siloxane network, as well as the exciting radiation wavelength, can affect the color of the prepared glasses, and so, be controlled in order to produce a desired emission.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors described and collected 29 soil profiles according with the main vegetation types of Campinaranas and Forests of PARNA Virua and surroundings, in an integrated vision of the landscape and, additionally, estimate the carbon stocks in soils and geo-environments.
Abstract: The Virua National Park (PARNA Virua) occupies 227.011 ha, in the region of the low 'Branco' river, in Roraima state. This area includes an extensive mosaic of complex seasonally flooded forested and non- forested environments. The present work aimed to characterize pedological aspects and identify the geo- environmental units of the Park and surroundings, in an integrated vision of the landscape and, additionally, estimate the carbon stocks in soils and geo-environments. We described and collected 29 soil profiles according with the main vegetation types of Campinaranas and Forests of PARNA Virua and surroundings. The main soil classes are: Espodossolo Humiluvico, Neossolo Quartzarenico, Neossolo Fluvico, Neossolo Litolicos, Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo, Latossolo Vermelho, Cambissolo Haplico, Cambissolo Fluvico, Gleissolo Haplico and Plintossolo Haplico. The soils present an spatial distribution marked by abrupt limits and close association with the vegetation type. We identified three pedo-environments: (1) sandy soils of the Campinaranas; (2) soils associated with the inselbergs and adjacencies; and (3) alluvial soils. We mapped and described 18 geoenvironmental units in PARNA Virua National Park and surroundings. The main geo- environments are: i) Sandy plains and Paleodunes with grassy and arborous Campinarana on 'Neossolos Quartzarenicos hidromorficos' and 'Espodossolos'; and Floodplains and; ii) Terraces with Igapo Forest on sandy hydromorphic soils, occupying 24.6 % and 20.1 % of the studied area, respectively. In terms of total soil carbon stocks, the geo-environments of the sandy complex of Campinaranas and associations stand out, with 9450.9 Gg C. The great extension and representativeness of the sandy areas of Campinaranas characterize PARNA Virua Park as an important conservation unit for protecting Amazonian sandy soil systems. The areas under the domain of 'Espodossolos' possess the largest stocks of organic carbon and the sandy areas of Campinaranas and associations represent the most relevant geo-environment in terms of Park protecting environmental services and conservation of carbon in soils.

TL;DR: In this article, a series of blends of PVC and polyaniline were studied by scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetry, and the results showed that the thermal stability of the synthesized blend is decreased as the total amount of polyanoline is enhanced.
Abstract: By dissolution of PVC and polyaniline in dimethylformamide, a series of blends PVC-polyaniline were produced which were studied by scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetry. Special attention is focused on the kinetic study of the thermal degradation steps by using non-isothermal thermogravimetric data. The results show that the thermal stability of the synthesized blend is decreased as the total amount of polyaniline is enhanced. Furthermore, the Brřnsted acid doped blend is more stable than the corresponding undoped one. PVC and the PVC-polyaniline blends exhibit two mass loss steps which activation energy values are in the range from 176 to 283 kJ mol-1 and 306 to 322 kJ mol-1, respectively.

TL;DR: During a medical entomology course in Boa Vista, Roraima, colonies of Triatoma maculata closely associated with pigeon nests were observed in concrete air-conditioner box located on the external plastered and cemented walls of a modern brick-built apartment block.
Abstract: During a medical entomology course in Boa Vista, Roraima, colonies of Triatoma maculata closely associated with pigeon nests were observed in concrete air-conditioner box located on the external plastered and cemented walls of a modern brick-built apartment block. In only one eight-hole ceramic brick, located inside one air-conditioner box, 127 specimens of T. maculata were collected. T. maculata is a recognised vector of Trypanosoma cruzi in the surrounding area and its domiciliation increases the risk of Chagas disease transmission.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that within-plate to post-collisional tectonic setting for the Iricoume volcanism was related to the reworking of older Paleoproterozoic at the Rhyacian-Siderian period, continental crust (Transamazonian crust-forming event) with some mixing with a limited amount mantle derived magmas or with contamination by Archean crust.
Abstract: The southernmost region of the Guyana shield, Amazonian craton, hosts large record of Paleoproterozoic effusive rocks of the Iricoume Group. They present remarkably well-preserved igneous textures and structures. The SiO2 contents reveal a bimodal association marked by a compositional gap between acid (SiO2 >; 67 wt%) and intermediate (SiO2 < 57.7 wt%) rocks. The acid effusive rocks are rhyolites to rhyodacites with high SiO2, alkali, Rb, Zr, Nb + Ta, La + Ce and 104 Ga/Al content and low Fe2O3tot, TiO2, CaO, Sr and Co content. They exhibit subalkaline, metaluminous-to-peraluminous compositions, and geochemically compatible to A-type magmatism emplaced in post-collisional to within-plate tectonic settings. The intermediate rocks are andesitic/basalt to andesite relatively high contents of TiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3total, MgO, CaO, Sr and Co; low SiO2, K2O, Rb, Zr, Nb + Ta, La + Ce. They have subalkaline and metaluminous geochemical composition and plot on within-plate basalt field. The acid rocks crystallized at 1882 ± 11 Ma in U-Pb analyses for LA-MC-ICPMS zircon data. The Sm-Nd isotopic data on all rocks reveal a Nd TDM model ages between 2.59 and 2.16 Ga and eNd(t) values between -5.78 and 0.03, indicate that the magmatic evolution was related to the reworking of older Paleoproterozoic at the Rhyacian-Siderian period, continental crust (Transamazonian crust-forming event) with some mixing with a limited amount mantle-derived magmas or with contamination by Archean crust. The petrographic, geochemical and geochronological data presented in this paper suggest a within-plate to post-collisional tectonic setting for the Iricoume volcanism, involving lower crust uplift and generation of basalt magma in an extensional regime.
