Abstract: Friction Spot Joining is an innovative friction-based joining technique for metal–polymer hybrid structures. In this work, aluminum alloy 2024-T3 and CF-PPS friction-spot joints were produced with additional PPS film interlayer. The joints were investigated in terms of the microstructure, mechanical performance under quasi-static loading and failure mechanisms. Macro- and micro-mechanical interlocking as well as adhesion forces were identified to dictate bonding mechanisms in the FSp joint with film interlayer. The ultimate lap shear force of the joints (2700 ± 115 N up to 3070 ± 165 N) were 20%–55% higher than the corresponding joints without interlayer, due to the larger bonding area, better load distribution and improved micro-mechanical interlocking. The failure analysis of the joints revealed a mixture of adhesive-cohesive failure, whereas cohesive failure was dominant.

Abstract: A strong greenish-light photoluminescence (PL) emission was measured at room temperature for disordered and ordered powders of CaMoO4 prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The structural evolution from disordered to ordered powders was accompanied by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and TEM imagery. High-level quantum mechanical calculations in the density functional framework were used to interpret the formation of the structural defects of disorder powders in terms of band diagram and density of states. Complex cluster vacancies [MoO3 x V(O(z))] and [CaO7 x V(O(z))] (where V(O(z)) = V(O(X)), V(O(*)), V(O(**))) were suggested to be responsible to the appearance of new states shallow and deeply inserted in the band gap. These defects give rise to the PL in disordered powders. The natural PL emission of ordered CaMoO4 was attributed to an intrinsic slight distortion of the [MoO4] tetrahedral in the short range.

Abstract: Mutualistic interactions repeatedly preserved across fragmented landscapes can scale-up to form a spatial metanetwork describing the distribution of interactions across patches. We explored the structure of a bird seed-dispersal (BSD) metanetwork in 16 Neotropical forest fragments to test whether a distinct subset of BSD-interactions may mediate landscape functional connectivity. The metanetwork is interaction-rich, modular and poorly connected, showing high beta-diversity and turnover of species and interactions. Interactions involving large-sized species were lost in fragments < 10 000 ha, indicating a strong filtering by habitat fragmentation on the functional diversity of BSD-interactions. Persistent interactions were performed by small-seeded, fast growing plant species and by generalist, small-bodied bird species able to cross the fragmented landscape. This reduced subset of interactions forms the metanetwork components persisting to defaunation and fragmentation, and may generate long-term deficits of carbon storage while delaying forest regeneration at the landscape level.

Abstract: Point-of-care diagnostics based on multiplexed protein measurements face challenges of simple, automated, low-cost, and high-throughput operation with high sensitivity. Herein, we describe an automated, microprocessor-controlled microfluidic immunoarray for simultaneous multiplexed detection of small protein panels in complex samples. A microfluidic sample/reagent delivery cassette was coupled to a 30-microwell detection array to achieve sensitive detection of four prostate cancer biomarker proteins in serum. The proteins are prostate specific antigen (PSA), prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA), platelet factor-4 (PF-4), and interlukin-6 (IL-6). The six channel system is driven by integrated micropumps controlled by an inexpensive programmable microprocessor.
