Abstract: Altered hip and knee kinematics in the frontal and transverse planes may increase patellofemoral joint stress and contribute to the development of patellofemoral pain. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the association among hip and knee kinematics, pain, and self-reported functional status in males and females with patellofemoral pain. 20 males and 20 females with patellofemoral pain participated in this study. 3-dimensional hip and knee kinematics were quantified while performing a step-down task. A visual analogue scale was used to evaluate usual knee pain. The anterior knee pain scale was used to evaluate the knee functional score. Abstract: Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are effector molecules expressed on the surface of ovarian cancer (OC) cells, but the functions of the TLR2/TLR4 signaling pathways in these cells remain unclear. Melatonin (mel) acts as an anti-inflammatory factor and has been reported to modulate TLRs in some aggressive tumor cell types. Therefore, we investigated OC and the effect of long-term mel therapy on the signaling pathways mediated by TLR2 and TLR4 via myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) and toll-like receptor-associated activator of interferon (TRIF) in an ethanol-preferring rat model. To induce OC, the left ovary of animals either consuming 10% (v/v) ethanol or not was injected directly under the bursa with a single dose of 100 μg of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) dissolved in 10 μL of sesame oil. The right ovaries were used as sham-surgery controls. After developing OC, half of the animals received i.p. injections of mel (200 μg/100 g b.w./day) for 60 days. Although mel therapy was unable to reduce TLR2 levels, it was able to suppress the OC-associated increase in the levels of the following proteins: TLR4, MyD88, nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB p65), inhibitor of NFkB alpha (IkBα), IkB kinase alpha (IKK-α), TNF receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6), TRIF, interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3), interferon β (IFN-β), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin (IL)-6. In addition, mel significantly attenuated the expression of IkBα, NFkB p65, TRIF and IRF-3, which are involved in TLR4-mediated signaling in OC during ethanol intake. Collectively, our results suggest that mel attenuates the TLR4-induced MyD88- and TRIF-dependent signaling pathways in ethanol-preferring rats with OC.

Abstract: Parkinson's disease (PD) has affected millions of people world-wide, being its major problem the loss of movements and, consequently, the ability of working and locomotion. Although we can find several works that attempt at dealing with this problem out there, most of them make use of datasets composed by a few subjects only. In this work, we present some results toward the automated diagnosis of PD by means of computer vision-based techniques in a dataset composed by dozens of patients, which is one of the main contributions of this work. The dataset is part of a joint research project that aims at extracting both visual and signal-based information from healthy and PD patients in order to go forward the early diagnosis of PD patients. The dataset is composed by handwriting clinical exams that are analyzed by means of image processing and machine learning techniques, being the preliminary results encouraging and promising. Additionally, a new quantitative feature to measure the amount of tremor of an individual's handwritten trace called Mean Relative Tremor is also presented.

Abstract: Risk assessments suggest that intermediate and long-term exposure to triazine herbicides and its metabolites through water can cause severe damage to human health. The objective of this study was to investigate the possible effects of atrazine on Wistar rats submitted to subacute treatment. For this purpose, the activity of catalase and alanine aminotransferase was quantified, and the effect of the herbicide on cell membranes was examined based on the measurement of lipid peroxidation and consequent formation of malondialdehyde and on the mRNA expression of antioxidant enzymes (Mn-superoxide dismutase [SOD] and GSTM1) and connexins. In addition, we evaluated histopathological alterations in the liver, cellular expression of SOD and glutathione (GST), activation of heat shock proteins (HSPs) by immunohistochemistry, and the induction of apoptosis. The genotoxic potential of the herbicide was investigated by the micronucleus test in bone marrow smears. Adult male Wistar rats were treated with an aqueous solution of atrazine at a concentration of 400mg/kg/day, by gavage, for 14 consecutive days. Control groups were also included. The results showed an increase of catalase levels and maintenance of the expression of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and GST). In addition, lipid peroxidation, hepatic tissue degeneration, activation of HSP90, increased levels of connexin mRNA, and genotoxicity were observed. In conclusion, atrazine induced early hepatic oxidative stress that triggered defense mechanisms to maintain the morphophysiological integrity of the liver. Further studies are needed to better understand the effects of this herbicide on human health.
