Abstract: The effects of the aging process and an active life-style on the autonomic control of heart rate (HR) were investigated in nine young sedentary (YS, 23 +/- 24 years), 16 young active (YA, 22 +/- 21 years), 8 older sedentary (OS, 63 +/- 24 years) and 8 older active (OA, 61 +/- 11 years) healthy men Electrocardiogram was continuously recorded for 15 min at rest and for 4 min in the deep breathing test, with a breath rate of 5 to 6 cycles/min in the supine position Resting HR and RR intervals were analyzed by time (RMSSD index) and frequency domain methods The power spectral components are reported in normalized units (nu) at low (LF) and high (HF) frequency, and as the LF/HF ratio The deep breathing test was analyzed by the respiratory sinus arrhythmia indices: expiration/inspiration ratio (E/I) and inspiration-expiration difference (deltaIE) The active groups had lower HR and higher RMSSD index than the sedentary groups (life-style condition: sedentary vs active, P < 005) The older groups showed lower HFnu, higher LFnu and higher LF/HF ratio than the young groups (aging effect: young vs older, P < 005) The OS group had a lower E/I ratio (116) and deltaIE (97 bpm) than the other groups studied (YS: 138, 224 bpm; YA: 140, 213 bpm; OA: 138, 185 bpm) The interaction between aging and life-style effects had a P < 005 These results suggest that aging reduces HR variability However, regular physical activity positively affects vagal activity on the heart and consequently attenuates the effects of aging in the autonomic control of HR

Abstract: The global market for dental materials is predicted to exceed 10 billion dollars by 2020. The main drivers for this growth are easing the workflow of dentists and increasing the comfort of patients. Therefore, remarkable research projects have been conducted and are currently underway to develop improved or new dental materials with enhanced properties or that can be processed using advanced technologies, such as CAD/CAM or 3D printing. Among these materials, zirconia, glass or polymer-infiltrated ceramics, and glass-ceramics (GCs) are of great importance. Dental glass-ceramics are highly attractive because they are easy to process and have outstanding esthetics, translucency, low thermal conductivity, high strength, chemical durability, biocompatibility, wear resistance, and hardness similar to that of natural teeth, and, in certain cases, these materials are bioactive. In this review article, we divide dental GCs into the following two groups: restorative and bioactive. Most restorative dental glass-ceramics (RDGCs) are inert and biocompatible and are used in the restoration and reconstruction of teeth. Bioactive dental glass-ceramics (BDGCs) display bone-bonding ability and stimulate positive biological reactions at the material/tissue interface. BDGCs are suggested for dentin hypersensitivity treatment, implant coating, bone regeneration and periodontal therapy. Throughout this paper, we elaborate on the history, processing, properties and applications of RDGCs and BDGCs. We also report on selected papers that address promising types of dental glass-ceramics. Abstract: Six species of Loricariidae belonging to the subfamilies Hypostominae (Hypostomus emarginatus, Rhinelepsis aspera, Pogonopoma wertheimeri), Ancistrinae (Panaque cf nigrolineatus, Hemiancistrus sp) and Loricariinae (Sturisoma cf nigrirostrum) were studied cytogenetically The results show that 2n = 54 represents the basal diploid number for this fish family Different trends in the karyotypic evolution can be seen among the subfamilies: Hypostominae and Loricariinae species present diversified karyotypic macrostructures, while the Ancistrinae appear to show more conserved karyotypes Among the Hypostominae, the genus Hypostomus had a wide karyotypic variation (2n = 52 to 80), where centric fissions seem to play an important role in this chromosomal divergence The nucleolar organizing regions were diversified, and occurrence of multiple NORs was frequent Heteromorphic chromosomes belonging to distinct sex chromosome systems can also occur infrequently among the Loricariidae
