TL;DR: The therapeutic effect of nerve conduits is improving with increasing choice of conduit material, new construction of conduits, and the inclusion of neurotrophic factors and support cells in the conduits.
Abstract: With significant advances in the research and application of nerve conduits, they have been used to repair peripheral nerve injury for several decades. Nerve conduits range from biological tubes to synthetic tubes, and from nondegradable tubes to biodegradable tubes. Researchers have explored hollow tubes, tubes filled with scaffolds containing neurotrophic factors, and those seeded with Schwann cells or stem cells. The therapeutic effect of nerve conduits is improving with increasing choice of conduit material, new construction of conduits, and the inclusion of neurotrophic factors and support cells in the conduits. Improvements in functional outcomes are expected when these are optimized for use in clinical practice.

TL;DR: Findings of this investigation suggest that MYR and MEG combined with cisplatin is a potential clinical chemotherapeutic approach in human cervical cancer.
Abstract: Drug combination therapies are common practice in the treatment of cancer. In this study, we evaluated the anticancer effects of myricetin (MYR), methyl eugenol (MEG) and cisplatin (CP) both separately as well as in combination against cervical cancer (HeLa) cells. To demonstrate whether MYR and MEG enhance the anticancer activity of CP against cervical cancer cells, we treated HeLa cells with MYR and MEG alone or in combination with cisplatin and evaluated cell growth and apoptosis using MTT (3 (4, 5 dimethyl thiazol 2yl) 2, 5 diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay, LDH release assay, flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. The results revealed that, as compared to single drug treatment, the combination of MYR or MEG with CP resulted in greater effect in inhibiting cancer cell growth and inducing apoptosis. Cell apoptosis induction, Caspase-3 activity, cell cycle arrest and mitochondrial membrane potential loss were systematically studied to reveal the mechanisms of synergy between MYR, MEG and CP. Combination of MYR or MEG with CP resulted in more potent apoptosis induction as revealed by fluorescence microscopy using Hoechst 33258 and AO-ETBR staining. The combination treatment also increased the number of cells in G0/G1 phase dramatically as compared to single drug treatment. Mitochondrial membrane potential loss (ΛΨm) as well as Caspase-3 activity was much higher in combination treatment as compared to single drug treatment. Findings of this investigation suggest that MYR and MEG combined with cisplatin is a potential clinical chemotherapeutic approach in human cervical cancer.

TL;DR: There are significant differences between the two operative approaches regarding the correction of Cobb angle, but no significant differences regarding operation time, blood loss, loss of Cobb angles, fusion time of allograft, time of total hospital stay, and length of total stay in the hospital.
Abstract: Timely and appropriate surgical intervention can enhance the stability of spine, eliminate the compression on spinal cord and prevent the further development the complications that may follow. However, there is no optimum surgical approach that has been agreed by surgeons. Incidence rate of spinal tuberculosis is still high in many developing countries. Except from chemotherapy, some patients require surgical treatment at certain phases of disease development. However, there is still not a standard operative procedure for spinal tuberculosis in the current research, and we studied the differences of anterior and posterior approach for spinal tuberculosis, to provide guidance for the further operative treatments. We searched “Pubmed” (2000.1–2014.7), “Medline” (2000.1–2014.7), “Elseveir” (2000.1–2014.7), Cochrane library (2008.1–2014.7), Wanfang (2000.1–2014.7), and CNKI (2000.1–2014.7) databases with the key words of “thoracolumbar tuberculosis”, “controlled randomized trial”, “RCT”, “anterior” “posterior”, and searched for randomized controlled trials for spinal tuberculosis. We compared the operative time, total blood loss, correction of Cobb angle, loss of Cobb angle at final follow-up, fusion time of allograft, time of total hospital stay, and the effectiveness of operative treatment between the anterior and posterior surgical approaches by Revman5.3 software. From 1,523 papers found, we chose eight randomized controlled trials comparing different surgical approaches for the treatment of spinal tuberculosis. The total number of patients was 754, in which 377 were treated with anterior approach and 377 were treated with posterior approach correction of Cobb angle (P 0.05). There are significant differences between the two operative approaches regarding the correction of Cobb angle, but no significant differences regarding operation time, blood loss, loss of Cobb angle at the last follow-up, total fusion time, and length of total stay in the hospital.

TL;DR: CDA can be an effective alternative method to ACDF for the treatment of cervical spondylosis and demonstrated better results than the ACDF group concerning VAS arm pain score 1, 2, 4 years after the surgery, VAS neck pain score 2, 1 and 2 years after the Surgery, patient satisfaction.
Abstract: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has been used as a gold standard for the treatment of cervical spondylosis, but it may cause complications such as pseudarthrosis and junctional degeneration. Cervical disk arthroplasty (CDA) may help overcome such problems, but there are inconsistencies among the published literature on its effectiveness comparing with ACDF. We searched “PubMed” (2000.1–2013.10), “Medline” (2000.1–2013.10), “Elsevier” (2000.1–2013.10), Cochrane library (2008.1–2013.10) databases with the key words of “cervical disk arthroplasy”, “CDA”, “anterior cervical disk fusion”, “ACDF”, “cervical”, “randomized controlled study”, “RCT” and searched for randomized controlled trials comparing the efficacy of ACDF and CDA for the treatment of cervical spondylosis. Neck disability index (NDI), VAS arm pain score, VAS neck pain score, ROM of the adjacent level, SF36-PCS score, SF36-MCS score and patient satisfaction were calculated by Revman5.2 software. From 1,400 papers found, we chose 18 randomized controlled trials and cohorts evaluating the efficacy of CDA and ACDF on symptomatic cerebral spondylosis. The total number of patients is 3,056, in which 1,576 were in the CDA group and 1,480 were in the ACDF group. The CDA group demonstrated better results than the ACDF group concerning VAS arm pain score 1, 2, 4 years after the surgery, VAS neck pain score 1, 2, 4 years after the surgery, ROM of the adjacent level 1 and 2 years after the surgery, patient satisfaction 1, 2, 4 years after the surgery, NDI scores 1, 2, 4 years after the surgery, SF36-PCS score 1 and 2 years after the surgery and SF36-MCS score at 1 and 4 years after the surgery. There are no significant differences between the groups concerning SF36-PCS score 4 years after the surgery and SF36-MCS score at 2 years after the surgery. CDA can be an effective alternative method to ACDF for the treatment of cervical spondylosis.

TL;DR: Ischemic postconditioning by brief interruptions of coronary blood flow at the onset of reperfusion after PCI appears to be superior to PCI alone in reducing myocardial injury and improving left ventricular function, especially in patients who have received direct stenting in PCI.
Abstract: Compelling evidence from large randomized trials demonstrates the salutary effects of ischemic postconditioning on cardioprotection against ischemic/reperfusion injury. However, some studies appear negative findings. This study was designed to assess the short-and long-term effects of postconditioning (Poc) in studies including evolving ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Relevant studies were identified through an electronic literature search from the PubMed, Library of Congress, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ISI Web of Science. Studies published up to December 2014 were eligible for inclusion. Patients older than 18 years presenting within 12 h of the first STEMI and eligible for angioplasty were considered for the study. The 25 trials allocated 1136 patients to perform locational postconditioning cycles at the onset of reperfusion and 1153 patients to usual percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Ischemic postconditioning demonstrated a decrease in serum cardiac enzymes creatine kinase (CK) and CK-MB (P < 0.00001 and P =0.25, respectively) in the subgroup analysis based on direct stenting. Reduction in infarct size by imaging was showed during7 days after myocardial infarction (P =0.01), but not in the longterm (P = 0.08). The wall motion score index was improved in both the short term within 7 days (P = 0.009) and the long term over 6 months after receiving Poc (P = 0.02). All included studies were limited by the high risk of performance and publication bias. Ischemic postconditioning by brief interruptions of coronary blood flow at the onset of reperfusion after PCI appears to be superior to PCI alone in reducing myocardial injury and improving left ventricular function, especially in patients who have received direct stenting in PCI.

TL;DR: Multi-mode ultrasound and Logistic regression model are more effective in diagnosing level 4 BI-RADS breast lesions and are effectively distinguish between benign and malignant tumors.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE This study is to investigate the diagnostic role of multi-mode ultrasound in level 4 BI-RADS breast lesions and to establish a Logistic regression model. METHODS Totally 179 patients with 182 sites of breast lesions were enrolled in this study. Preoperatively, the examinations of routine ultrasonography, elastography, contrast-enhanced ultrasonography and three-dimensional color Doppler were performed. Postoperatively, the breast lesions were diagnosed as benign and malignant lesions according to pathological results. Diagnostic indicators of each ultrasound analysis were determined and compared. The relationship between these diagnostic indicators and the benign and malignant features of breast lesions was analyzed by single factor analysis. Logistic regression model was established. RESULTS The diagnostic indicators with high sensitivity and specificity were tumor edge, enhanced range and score of elastography. Four factors of tumor edge, enhanced order, contrast mode and score of elastography were related with the benign and malignant features of breast lesions. The prediction model was Logit (P) = 0.636 + 4.471X1 + 4.337X2 + 3.753X3 + 3.014X4 + 2.525X5 + 2.105X6. Likelihood ratio test showed that the model was statistically significant (χ(2) = 161.876, P < 0.0001). This model could effectively distinguish between benign and malignant tumors (R(2) = 0.813, prediction accuracy 92.3%). The differences in sensitivity and specificity between multi-mode ultrasound diagnosis and routine ultrasound diagnosis were statistically significant (P < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference between Logistic regression model and multi-mode ultrasound diagnosis. CONCLUSION Multi-mode ultrasound and Logistic regression model are more effective in diagnosing level 4 BI-RADS breast lesions.

TL;DR: Investigation of the incidence and development of pneumoconiosis in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and cases reported by the Urumqi Railway Bureau found substantial effort is still required to eliminate pneumoconia by 2030.
Abstract: This study investigated the incidence and development of pneumoconiosis in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and cases reported by the Urumqi Railway Bureau to provide a scientific basis for developing prevention and control measures against pneumoconiosis. Data from pneumoconiosis cases were input into Excel and analyzed by SPSS version 17.0. There were 13,165 cases of pneumoconiosis through 2010. Coal workers accounted for the largest proportion of cases. From July 2006 through 2010, a total of 1233 new cases of pneumoconiosis were reported in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region; most cases were reported in Urumqi. From 1981 to 2012, 3332 new cases of pneumoconiosis had been confirmed by the Urumqi Railway Bureau, including 77.73, 16.96, and 5.31% stage I, II, and III cases, respectively. In the last 30 years, the number of new pneumoconiosis cases peaked in 1986; most of them were silicosis cases. In addition, there were more than 200 cases of pneumoconiosis combined with pulmonary tuberculosis reported by the Urumqi Railway Bureau. The coal industry in Urumqi is the main industry in which occupational pneumoconiosis occurs in Xinjiang. Thus, substantial effort is still required to eliminate pneumoconiosis by 2030.

TL;DR: Using ECG-ATCM technology in prospective sequential CTCA scanning may significantly reduce the radiation dose required for overweight patients, and there was no marked difference observed in image quality.
Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate the X-ray absorption dose and clinical applications of electrocardiogram (ECG)-gated automatic tube current modulation (ATCM) technology in prospective sequential computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) scans of overweight patients. A total of 40 patients with a body mass index of >24 were divided at random into groups A and B. Group A consisted of 20 patients, who were examined using ECG-ATCM scanning. For the patients in group A with heart rates 70 bpm, the scanning range was 20-80% of the R-R interval and the patients received full-dose scanning for 35-55% of the R-R interval. For the 20 patients in group B, the scanning range was 20-80% of the R-R interval and patients received a full dose of X-ray radiation for the entire scanning period. The image quality and radiation dose was compared between the two groups. The average radiation dose in groups A and B was 6.91±2.78 and 10.43±3.36, respectively. The radiation doses in group A were reduced by 33.77% when compared with group B (P<0.05). However, there was no marked difference observed in image quality. In summary, using ECG-ATCM technology in prospective sequential CTCA scanning may significantly reduce the radiation dose required for overweight patients.

TL;DR: In unilateral congenital hip dysplasia acetabular location, total hip arthroplasty with computer-aided design navigation template can accurately reconstruct the affected hip rotation center, and effectively improve the accuracy of the prosthesis placement with advantages of higher accuracy and quicker positioning.
Abstract: Objective To create a digital acetabulum molding navigation path and investigate application value of digital navigation technology in total hip replacement for developmental dysplasia of the hip. Methods Ten adult patients with DDH(Crowe Ⅳ) were divided into computer navigation group and non-computer navigation group. In the computer navigation group of 5 cases, CAD, reverse engineering software, computer-aided design and 3D print were used for DDH acetabulum molding preoperative and intraoperative localization and simulation of operation on the computer workstation. The surgery path planning, 3D printing solid model preoperative drills, computer-aided design navigation template assisted in total hip arthroplasty. In the non-computer navigation group, the conventional techniques were used in total hip replacement. Results In navigation group actual operation and computer simulation of operation image and 3D rapid prototyping of joint model were very similar. Between navigation and non-navigation group there were significant differences in surgery time(t =-5.284, P =0.024), blood loss(t =-1.732, P =0.034) abduction angle offset amplitude(t =-3.734, P =0.024). Ten cases were followed up for average 9.5(3-17)months. The femoral fracture occurred in one case of non-navigation group when the prosthesis was implanted, and was fixed with plate in surgery. Navigation group had high accuracy with satisfactory prosthesis position. Conclusion In unilateral congenital hip dysplasia acetabular location, total hip arthroplasty with computer-aided design navigation template can accurately reconstruct the affected hip rotation center, and effectively improve the accuracy of the prosthesis placement with advantages of higher accuracy and quicker positioning.

TL;DR: SP and TRPV1 were involved in the formation and persistence of pain in CNP rats through their upregulated expressions in the L5-S2 spinal segments.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE To study the possible mechanisms of chronic nonbacterial prostatitis (CNP) pain. METHODS CNP models were established in male Wistar rats by the autoimmune method. Then the paw withdrawal threshold (PWT) was detected using the Von Frey filament, prostate pathological examination was conducted, the expressions of substance P (SP) and transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) in the prostate tissue and L5-S2 spinal segments were determined by immunohistochemistry and their correlations were analyzed. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the CNP model rats showed markedly decreased PWT (P < 0.05) and obvious inflammation in the prostate tissue, with significant differences in the scope of lesion and interstitial lymphocyte infiltration (P < 0.05). The expressions of SP and TRPV1 in the prostate and spinal cord dorsal horn L5-S2 were remarkably upregulated in the models as compared with the control rats (P < 0.05). However, the expression of SP in the prostate was not correlated with that in the spinal cord (r = 0.099, P = 0.338), nor was that of TRPV1 (r = 0.000, P = 0.5). CONCLUSION SP and TRPV1 were involved in the formation and persistence of pain in CNP rats through their upregulated expressions in the L5-S2 spinal segments.
