TL;DR: Many of the plants brought to Florida have become important as ornamentals or foods; however, some of the exotics have escaped and now present problems to the native ecosystems and to Man as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Europeans began introducing plants into southeastern Florida during the 16th century, and by the middle of the 18th century several of these were already naturalized. Few of these events have been recorded, but we know that the Guava, Papaya, and oranges, were among the early immigrants. American settlement in the middle 1800s began another phase of plant movement which continues to the present. H. M. Flagler, Henry Nehrling, John C. Gifford, and others, brought plants in for landscaping or other uses. Among those brought in by the United States Department of Agriculture were the Sisal, introduced by Henry Perrine, and the many food and ornamental plants sent by David Fairchild to the Miami Introduction Station. Many of the plants brought to Florida have become important as ornamentals or foods; however, some of the exotics have escaped and now present problems to the native ecosystems and to Man.Over 170 species of ferns and flowering plants are naturalized in southeastern Florida. Hundreds of other exotic plants have been introduced into the region and the potential exists for others to escape. Species such as Melaleuca quinquenervia are invading wet habitats and decreasing diversity; the Australian Pine (Casuarina equisetifolia) has become so abundant on some beaches that it interferes with nesting seaturtles and American Crocodiles, as well as contributing to dune erosion. Water-hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and Florida Elodea (Hydrilla verticillata) clog natural and artificial lakes, ponds, and canals, blocking boat traffic and slowing water movement. Several grasses that were introduced as pasture plants are now considered pests. Even human health is being threatened by exotic plants such as the Melaleuca and Pepper-tree (Schinus terebinthifolius), which cause respiratory allergies and contact dermatitis.

TL;DR: For instance, this article found that preoperational children can form schemata to represent organized scenes (Stage 1), but it is not until the emergence of concrete operations that these schema become operational with respect to guiding the further processing of information in the scene (Stage 2).
Abstract: Recognition memory for previously seen multiobject scenes was examined for different types of contextual arrangements between objects in the scenes. It was found that organized scenes with novel but possible interobject relations were recognized more accurately than either organized scenes with familiar interobject relations or unorganized scenes with impossible interobject relations. This finding was obtained for adults, 8- to 10-year-old children, and 5- to 8-year-old children who indicated concrete-operational ability in Piaget’s conservation-of-liquid quantity task. The results were interpreted in conjunction with a two-stage model of scene processing involving the formation of a schema to represent a scene (Stage 1), and the operation of the schema in governing the further processing of detailed information in the scene (Stage 2). It was concluded that preoperational children can form schemata to represent organized scenes (Stage 1), but it is not until the emergence of concrete operations that these schemata become operational with respect to guiding the further processing of information in the scene (Stage 2).

Abstract: Copper porphyrins have been isolated from deep-sea sediments collected during six legs of the Deep Sea Drilling Project-International Program of Ocean Drilling. These pigments are present in depositional areas receiving high inputs of terrestrially derived oxidized organic matter. Such areas include the Black Sea, the Bay of Biscay, the Blake-Bahama Basin, and slumped Miocene deposits off Cape Bojador on the west coast of Africa.

TL;DR: Antennular chemosensitivity in the spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, to extract of the pink shrimp, Penaeus duorarum is based on extract components of less than 1,000 molecular weight.
Abstract: Antennular chemosensitivity in the spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, to extract of the pink shrimp, Penaeus duorarum is based on extract components of less than 1,000 molecular weight. Amino acids account for a major part, but not all, of the extract's capacity to stimulate antennular receptors. Taurine is the most stimulatory of the amino acids comprising P. duorarum extract, although no single amino acid accounts for the amino acid fraction's stimulatory potential.

TL;DR: The results supported the hypothesis that subjects in the Cooper and Shepard task would mentally rotate alphabet letters only when they were presented in orientations for which they were not perceptually upright.
Abstract: Performance in Cooper and Shepard’s (1973) mental rotation task was examined in the context of a model that defined the extent to which alphabet letters could be tilted from their normal orientation and still be perceptually upright. For letters with a broad range of orientations for which they remain perceptually upright, a nonlinear effect of orientation on reaction time was obtained (as in Cooper and Shepard). However, for letters with a narrow range of orientations for which they remain perceptually upright, reaction time was linearly related to orientation. The results supported the hypothesis that subjects in the Cooper and Shepard task would mentally rotate alphabet letters only when they were presented in orientations for which they were not perceptually upright.

TL;DR: In this article, the heat transfer characteristics of layered composites where the interface is parallel to the major heat flow direction were investigated for low frequency periodic excitation, and the authors concluded that the use of steady equivalent thermal properties for unsteady heat conduction gives good results only when the thermal conductivities of the two constituents do not differ widely.

TL;DR: In this article, a multigroup, flux-limited diffusion scheme for neutrino transport in a collapsing stellar core is proposed, which is derived from the Boltzmann equation.
Abstract: A multigroup, diffusion scheme is derived from the Boltzmann equation for efficient numerical computation of neutrino transport in a collapsing stellar core. This scheme treats all neutrino scattering processes correctly with a Legendre expansion of the scattering rates. Modifications of the diffusion coefficient and the addition of a flux limiter extend the applicability of the scheme to neutrino transparent regimes and improve the agreement of the solution in both opaque and transparent regimes with those obtained analytically for some test problems. In addition, a more accurate treatment of the neutrino flowAcross shock discontinuities is developed through a shock matching condition. The solutions given by this multigroup, flux-limited diffusion scheme are compared with those of a modifiedS N code.

TL;DR: The present range of this exotic species covers 18 counties or somewhat more than 25 % of the freshwater area of Florida, and this has happened in the ca ten years since the first specimens were found in the wild.
Abstract: In April 1975, the Walking Catfish (Clarias batrachus) was known to be established in ten counties of Florida. The present range of this exotic species covers 18 counties or somewhat more than 25 % of the freshwater area of Florida, and this has happened in the ca ten years since the first specimens were found in the wild. Severely cold winters have failed to stem range expansion, and future northward migration in peninsular Florida can be expected.

TL;DR: This article showed that the stress contours of most English words can be generated from underlying forms which are closely related to their traditional orthographic representations, and that native speakers should generally agree in assigning stress to unknown written words.
Abstract: The stress contours of most English words can be generated from underlying forms which are closely related to their traditional orthographic representations. If such underlying forms are psychologically real, then native speakers should generally agree in assigning stress to unknown written words. Since some of the stress rules for English are based in part on learned Latinate vocabulary, the test words were of Latin, Greek, and Germanic origin to test for differences in performance relative to the source of the word. The results show a high degree of consistency in stress assignment but no significant differences in performance on words of different origin.

TL;DR: This paper found that the availability of family planning services in U.S. counties is positively related to the percentage of blacks in the population but has yet to establish the correct interpretation for the linkage.
Abstract: Previous research by Kammeyer et al. has found that the availability of family planning services in U.S. counties is positively related to the percentage of blacks in the population but has yet to establish the correct interpretation for the linkage. Services provided through county health departments and hospitals are usually provided by authority of local boards and county commissions. These people respond to local elites and share local political norms. Threatened whites are more disposed to fertility control programs than whites living in nonblack areas. Little support is found for an altruistic interpretation of local policy decisions. The decisions regarding services provided by Planned Parenthood and O.E.O. are due mainly to urbanism and are not consistent with either the racial or the altruistic interpretation. The variables used to determine these conclusions were measures of black concentration county political orientations other policies affecting blacks and the availability of family planning services.

TL;DR: Results suggest socio‐cultural characteristics are clearly related to the incidence of impotence reported across societies; among the variables investigated those reflecting the degree of a society's sexual restrictiveness were most predictive of incidence ofImpotence.
Abstract: Data on the social structural characteristics, sexual attitudes and sexual practices of thirty preindustrial and industrializing societies are examined in an attempt to identify some of the major sociological (as opposed to purely psychological) correlates of impotence. Results suggest two major conclusions: First, socio‐cultural characteristics are clearly related to the incidence of impotence reported across societies; second, among the variables investigated those reflecting the degree of a society's sexual restrictiveness were most predictive of incidence of impotence.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used dummy variables 1 and 0 as an alternative to analyze the variance and covariance to compare the relationship among groups of observations and showed that the dummy variable regression not only can perform a good result as performed by the standard technique, but simultaneously test the difference between two regression lines whether due to slope coefficients or intercept terms.

TL;DR: Comparison of mean differences on measures of socialization pressure and observed aggregate behavior of children provide little support for the hypothesis, suggesting that child training emphases in African and non-African societies diverge much less than had been believed.
Abstract: Summary Cross-cultural ratings of childhood socialization processes in 104 societies are used to test the hypothesis that African societies place greater emphasis on the inculcation of independence, self-reliance, and nurturance than do non-African societies. Comparison of mean differences on measures of socialization pressure and observed aggregate behavior of children provide little support for the hypothesis, suggesting that child training emphases in African and non-African societies diverge much less than had been believed.

TL;DR: In this article, an initial analysis of how fatigue variables might influence mixing between the crack and bulk solutions is presented, and the significance of the projected trends is discussed within the frame of commonly employed corrosion-fatigue test procedures.
Abstract: There exists in the literature several observations indicating that the electrolyte within corrosion-fatigue cracks can become modified relative to the bulk solution. Since the rate of fatigue-crack growth should depend upon electrolyte chemistry near the crack tip, it is important that the conditions under which such modification occurs and the role of influential variables be recognized. This paper represents an initial analysis of how fatigue variables might influence mixing between the crack and bulk solutions. The rationale considers that such mixing is governed primarily by net momentum of the periodically exhausted and ingested electrolyte. It is shown that this momentum should be directly proportional to the crack opening angle, cyclic frequency, and the cube of crack length. Decreasing mean stress also contributes to a momentum increase, with the latter becoming large for stress functions that result in crack closure during a portion of each cycle. Other factors which are considered include temperature, stress-wave form, specimen geometry, test method, and applied current density. The significance of the projected trends is discussed within the frame of commonly employed corrosion-fatigue test procedures.

TL;DR: Stictocardia tiliifolia (Desr.) H. Hall.
Abstract: Stictocardia tiliifolia (Desr.) H. Hall. is accepted as the correct name for the type species ofStictocardia. An earlier name,Ipomoea campanulata L., regarded as a synonym of S.tiliifolia for the last 50 years, is found to be synonymous withIpomoea illustris (C. B. Clarke) Prain, a species occurring in coastal/tidal riverine habitats of South Asia. Material from interior habitats, calledI. campanulata by authors of Indian floras, is believed to represent a variety of trueI. campanulata or a closely related species.

TL;DR: Observation indicated that the value of the internship was directly related to the typ e of work in which the student was engaged, and those placed in positions demanding responsibility and initiative were most able to convert their years in the academic program into actual work experience.
Abstract: Industry was, and still is, critical of many academic computer science programs ; students are educate d primarily in the theoretical and non-applied areas of computing. Potential employers may demand a minimum of two years experience which the graduate does not have. The typical student can become discouraged and may obtain work in a one or two man shop, gaining experience while losing motivation and interes t in the more formal pursuit of computer science. Now that academic computer systems programs are becomin g increasingly available, universities and industry can cooperate to produce graduates more attuned to th e demands of future employment. This awareness can be partly realized in cooperative employment program s by universities and appropriate industrial firms. Originally, the internship was to satisfy a university requirement : each department should have a course in the university ' s cooperative program. After two or three groups of students had completed th e internship, it was observed that they had the option of returning to work with their "employer " at a salary commensurate with an individual having at least two years experience, or employment elsewhere a t a similar rate. Observation indicated that the value of the internship was directly related to the typ e of work in which the student was engaged. Those placed in positions demanding responsibility and initiative were most able to convert their years in the academic program into actual work experience. The success or failure of. an internship program rests with its administration. Unless the facult y administrator, industrial supervisor and student have clearly defined guidelines, misunderstandings ma y lead to frustrations and the ultimate demise of the program. The sponsoring organization must feel tha t the student and the university are working toward its goals, whereas the university must be satisfie d that the student is obtaining further training in the field. In order to accomplish these objectives , the p roject must be clearly defined, the studen t ' s role must be specified, and the industrial superviso r should be the primary evaluator. A clearly defined project provides the basis for control of an internship . This allows the faculty administrator to ascertain the usefulness of the work. It should b e apparent from the description what new skills or training the student will receive. In addition t o specifying a suitable project, the description should provide the basis for …

TL;DR: In this paper, a fuzzy probability measure theory was proposed in which characteristic functions are replaced by confidence functions on the direct product of the spectra of the elements of the algebra, and invariance of the measures may be used to determine the confidence functions and measures.
Abstract: Publisher Summary The product of the variances of two general elements may possess a nontrivial lower bound, a property that is the generalization of the Heisenberg uncertainty relations in quantum mechanics. Significant progress is made in that area by creating a fuzzy probability measure theory in which characteristic functions are replaced by confidence functions on the direct product of the spectra of the elements of the algebra. For the position and momentum operators in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, invariance of the measures may be used to determine the confidence functions and measures. This chapter presents the analog to the Cauchy–Schwarz–Bunyakovsky inequality for positive linear functionals. It explains that rather than considering "observables" as a primary object to be defined for a proposition lattice, one should first define an analog of joint probability functions and then obtain the "observables" by marginality.

TL;DR: 39 fourth grade children exposed to a haptic (active touch) match-to-sample task made significantly fewer posttest errors, relative to control subjects, on a visual problem-solving task.
Abstract: 39 fourth grade children exposed to a haptic (active touch) match-to-sample task made significantly fewer posttest errors, relative to control subjects, on a visual problem-solving task. Further, this reduction in errors was comparable to that shown by children who had received specific training in reflective problem-solving. The results were discussed in terms of the possible facilitative effects exposure to a haptic task can have on children's visual problem-solving.
