01 Jan 1971TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed theoretical study of the dissolution of precipitates was made, including the concurrent effects of diffusion, interface reaction, and curvature, and considered the more complex problems of precipitate arrays and non-deleted matrices.
Abstract: A detailed theoretical study was made of the dissolution of precipitates. The kinetic analyses of the atomic mechanisms included the concurrent effects of diffusion, interface reaction, and curvature, and considered the more complex problems of precipitate arrays and nondepleted matrices. The general formalism thus obtained was used to interpret the results of an experimental investigation of the technologically important problem of the dissolution of “reluctantly soluble” carbides in the Fe-C-V system. It was found that vanadium carbide (and iron carbide as well) were quite easily dissolved while complex alloy sulfides, silicates and oxides (possibly associated with the presence of vanadium) persisted, with little if any dissolution. Previous views of the reasons for poor hardenability were reevaluated in light of these results.

TL;DR: Wind tunnel measurements and direct tailpipe particulate matter (PM) sampling are utilized to examine how the combination of oxidation catalyst and fuel sulfur content affects the nature and quantity of PM emissions from the exhaust of a light duty diesel truck.
Abstract: Wind tunnel measurements and direct tailpipe particulate matter (PM) sampling are utilized to examine how the combination of oxidation catalyst and fuel sulfur content affects the nature and quantity of PM emissions from the exhaust of a light duty diesel truck. When low sulfur fuel (4 ppm) is used, or when high sulfur (350 ppm) fuel is employed without an active catalyst present, a single log-normal distribution of exhaust particles is observed with a number mean diameter in the range of 70−83 nm. In the absence of the oxidation catalyst, the high sulfur level has at most a modest effect on particle emissions (<50%) and a minor effect on particle size (<5%). In combination with the active oxidation catalyst tested, high sulfur fuel can lead to a second, nanoparticle, mode, which appears at ∼20 nm during high speed operation (70 mph), but is not present at low speed (40 mph). A thermodenuder significantly reduces the nanoparticle mode when set to temperatures above ∼200 °C, suggesting that these particles...

TL;DR: In the last 10 years an extensive research and development effort has been made to implement the catalytic removal of noxious constituents from automotive exhaust as discussed by the authors, which is finally coming to fruition as this paper is going into print.
Abstract: In the last 10 years an extensive research and development effort has been made to implement the catalytic removal of noxious constituents from automotive exhaust. This effort is finally coming to fruition as this paper is going into print. Vehicles sold in the United States in 1975 will be, in a significant proportion, equipped with catalytic devices. The incorporation of a miniature chemical conversion plant into millions of moving objects operating under widely varying conditions, while being required to assure reliable performance for extended usage periods, has called for the combined skills of scientists, engineers, and designers in several industries. Even so, at present only the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons has reached the implementation stage. The catalytic removal of nitrogen oxides has turned out to be a still more difficult task. This review will summarize very briefly the present state-of-art of the catalytic devices for the treatment of NO, emissions, but ...

18 Dec 1978TL;DR: In this article, a vehicle electrical system tester which connects in parallel across the vehicle battery and the portion of the electrical system to be tested and measures voltage changes upon selective actuation of portions of the vehicle electrical systems is described.
Abstract: This specification discloses a vehicle electrical system tester which connects in parallel across the vehicle battery and the portion of the electrical system to be tested and measures voltage changes upon selective actuation of portions of the vehicle electrical system. Comparison of these measured voltages with predetermined values is used in evaluating whether the electrical system is operating properly. The method of testing using the apparatus includes measuring a first voltage level after connection of the apparatus, actuating a portion of the vehicle electrical system, measuring a second voltage level, calculating a voltage difference as a function of the first and second voltage levels, comparing the voltage difference to a predetermined voltage magnitude, and determining if the actuated portion of the electrical system is operating properly. Additional sensitivity can be achieved by establishing a third voltage level through the use of a calibration resistor.

08 Jun 1989TL;DR: In this paper, a method of controlling processing in a computer, particularly real-time processing, is performed using computer data objects, and all subsequent processing is performed on the computer data object.
Abstract: A method of controlling processing in a computer, particularly real-time processing, is performed using computer data objects. Real-time or other input data received from data sources is classified according to pre-stored control data. The control data defines which data source provides the real-time data, how the real-time data is to be processed, where the real-time data is to be stored and what reports the real-time data will be used in. The classified real-time data becomes a computer data object with its associated control data and all subsequent processing is performed on the computer data object.
