TL;DR: In this article, a model is developed which allows one to easily calculate correlation effects of interacting electrons, and the coupling strength between the electron and the plasma modes is determined by requiring the model to have a correct dielectric response.
Abstract: A model is developed which allows one to easily calculate correlation effects of interacting electrons. Upon considering a particular electron one replaces the excitation spectrum of all other electrons by a single mode $\ensuremath{\omega}(q)$, varying between the plasma frequency for small $q$ and $\frac{\ensuremath{\hbar}{q}^{2}}{2m}$ for large $q$. The coupling strength between the electron and the plasma modes is found by imposing the $f$ sum rule. $\ensuremath{\omega}(q)$ is determined by requiring the model to have a correct dielectric response. The exchange and correlation contributions to $E(k)$ have nearly opposite $k$ dependence. However, there is a residual oscillation near ${k}_{F}$ which causes the effective mass ${m}^{*}$ to be less than unity, even though the mean mass (between $k=0$ and ${k}_{F}$) is greater than unity. A specific local approximation to the exchange and correlation potential ${A}_{\mathrm{xc}}=\ensuremath{-}2.07{(n{a}_{0}^{3})}^{0.3}\mathrm{Ry}$, analogous to Slater's ${n}^{\frac{1}{3}}$ exchange potential, is accurate over 3 orders of magnitude in density. The (bare) momentum distribution $n(k)$, and the fraction $\ensuremath{\zeta}$ of electrons excited above ${k}_{F}$, are calculated as a function of density. For Li and Na, excluding band-structure effects, $\ensuremath{\zeta}=0.11 \mathrm{and} 0.14$, respectively.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method to measure the interfacial work of adhesion, gamma /sub s/, between undoped polysilicon beams and a silicon substrate is presented, which relies on the peeling and detachment of poly silicon cantilever beams.
Abstract: A method to measure the interfacial work of adhesion, gamma /sub s/, between undoped polysilicon beams and a silicon substrate is presented. The method relies on the peeling and detachment of polysilicon cantilever beams. Values of surface energy of gamma /sub s/=140+or-70 mJ m/sup -2/ were found for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic samples. The technique used should also be applicable to the measurement of gamma /sub s/ for other micromechanical material systems. >

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the behavior of discrete-time current regulators for AC machines operating at high ratios of fundamental-to-sampling frequencies, a situation common for high speed automotive drives and large traction drives.
Abstract: This paper analyzes the behavior of discrete-time current regulators for AC machines operating at high ratios of fundamental-to-sampling frequencies, a situation common for high speed automotive drives and large traction drives. At high ratios of fundamental-to-sampling frequencies, highly oscillatory, or unstable, response can occur if the current regulator design does not properly incorporate the effects of the discrete nature of the controller, including delays between the sampling of signals and the application of the voltage commands through pulse-width modulation (PWM). This paper investigates these issues for different design methods and current regulator topologies. As part of this investigation a simple discrete-time domain AC machine model is developed that includes the delays associated with PWM. This model is then used to design a discrete-time domain version of the complex vector PI current regulator that demonstrates improved response compared with the other regulators studied. Simulation and experimental results are provided to compare the performance, stability, and robustness of the current regulators analyzed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method and system for processing and presenting on-line, multimedia information such as diagnostic information for a machine tool is provided for training, process planning, marketing, sales, help desk applications, other machine diagnostics, and engineering design.
Abstract: Method and system are provided for processing and presenting on-line, multimedia information such as diagnostic information for a machine tool. The system uses multimedia information tools (i.e. graphics, documentation, drawings, photographs, full motion video with audio, PLC ladder, etc.) and techniques to assist maintenance personnel. Diagnostic development and multimedia information assignment are accomplished through graphical visual programming, which requires no conventional software programming efforts. The system uses diagnostic trees having multimedia graphic icons which define the diagnostic components. In developing a visual diagnostic tree, the multimedia information can be assigned or mapped to each node of the tree by selecting an appropriate icon to represent the multimedia from an icon library. Then, an appropriate media information file or record and comments for that icon are further added to define that node assignments. The system is user friendly, uses conventional hardware and can be used on the plant floor. The system is immediately executable and is generic. The method and system can also be used for training, process planning, marketing, sales, help desk applications, other machine diagnostics, and engineering design.

TL;DR: A wide variety of modifications may be made to the source object in order to form modified stereo images as discussed by the authors, and these modifications may involve modifying one or more images relative to the original image.
Abstract: Methods, devices and systems are provided which produce a synthesized stereoscopic image of a source image by forming at least two images from a source image where at least one image has been modified relative to the source image such that the images have a different spacial appearance than each other. A wide variety of modifications may be made to the source object in order to form modified stereo images. These modifications may involve modifying one or more images relative to the source image. For example, at least one image may be magnified, reduced, or rotated in the X, Y and/or Z plane relative to the source image. Alternatively or in addition, the position of one or more elements of one of the images may also be changed relative to the source image. Alternatively or in addition, at least one of the images may be transformed relative to the source image using a function which alters the position of elements of the image along the X or Y axis relative to the source image. In one variation, the function is a distorting algorithm, for example an elliptical or aspheric distorting algorithm which is not dependent on the depth information of the source image.
