TL;DR: Daytime sleepiness was inversely related to hours of sleep and positively related to the ease of falling asleep at night; it varied significantly by employment and marital status.
Abstract: OBJECTIVES: Although excessive daytime sleepiness is associated with increased risks for accidents, decreased productivity, and interpersonal difficulties, information on its epidemiology is scarce. This paper examines correlates of and suspected risk factors for daytime sleepiness from a longitudinal epidemiological study of young adults. METHODS: The sample consisted of 1007 randomly selected young adults from a large health maintenance organization in southeast Michigan. Data were gathered in personal interviews conducted with 97% of the sample 5.5 years after baseline. Information on sleep characteristics in the last 2 weeks, including daytime sleepiness, nocturnal sleep onset, snoring, and hours of sleep, was collected on a self-administered instrument. Psychiatric disorders were measured by the National Institute of Mental Health's Diagnostic Interview Schedule. RESULTS: The average length of nocturnal sleep on weekdays was 6.7 hours. Daytime sleepiness was inversely related to hours of sleep and po...

TL;DR: A lower limit of 0.1 year for the residence time of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere is derived from radiocarbon measurements, which can be compared with 2.7 years, a value deduced from estimated rates ofcarbon monoxide production and global measurements of atmospheric concentrations of Carbon monoxide.
Abstract: A lower limit of 0.1 year for the residence time of carbon monIoxide in the atmosphere is derived from radiocarbon measurements. The action of certain microorganisms and atmospheric photochemical reactions are possible mechanisms for the removal of carbon monoxide. This value can be compared with 2.7 years, a value deduced from estimated rates of carbon monoxide production and global measurements of atmospheric concentrations of carbon monoxide.

TL;DR: No evidence for withholding tPA treatment for AIS in appropriately selected patients aged >/=80 years was identified, and age-related differences in characteristics and disposition were identified.
Abstract: Background and Purpose—Intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) administered within 3 hours of symptom onset is the first available effective therapy for acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Few data exist, however, on its use in very elderly patients. We examined the characteristics, complications, and short-term outcome of AIS patients aged ≥80 years treated with tPA. Methods—Patients aged ≥80 years (n=30) were compared with counterparts aged <80 years (n=159) included in the tPA Stroke Survey, a US retrospective survey of 189 consecutive AIS patients treated with intravenous tPA at 13 hospitals. Results—Risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (fatal, symptomatic, and total) was 3%, 3%, and 7% in the elderly age group and 2%, 6%, and 9%, respectively, in their younger counterparts (P=NS for all comparisons). Likelihood of favorable outcome, defined as modified Rankin score 0 to 1, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score ≤5, or marked improvement by hospital discharge, was comparable between groups (37%,...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors applied the method of Lavoie el al. to a spark-ignited carburetted IC engine and incorporated into the computer program the engine variables; fuel type, fuel air equivalence ratio, humidity content of inlet air, % exhaust gas recirculation, inlet manifold temperature, manifold pressure, RPM, compression ratio, piston connecting rod to crank ratio, and duration and position of combustion in the cycle.
Abstract: Lavoie, Heywood and Keck (1970) have recently shown how one can calculate the amount of NO formed during the combustion and subsequent expansion stroke of an IC engine. In this paper we have applied the method of Lavoie el al. to a spark-ignited carburetted IC engine and have incorporated into the computer program the engine variables; fuel type, fuel air equivalence ratio, humidity content of inlet air, % exhaust gas recirculation, inlet manifold temperature, inlet manifold pressure, RPM, compression ratio, piston connecting rod to crank ratio, and duration and position of combustion in the cycle. In addition to NO, we calculate indicated mean effective pressure and indicated specific fuel consumption. Brake specific values are calculated from an empirical correlation. Calculated NO levels show good agreement with data in the literature for the effect of the variables of air-fuel ratio, manifold pressure, spark timing, and humidity. Control methods capable of reducing NO emissions to the 100 ppm...
