Abstract: Atoms and molecules adsorbed on metals affect each other indirectly even over considerable distances. Via systematic density-functional calculations, we establish the nature and strength of such interactions, and explain for what adsorbate systems they critically affect important materials properties. This is verified in kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of epitaxial growth, which help rationalize a number of recent experimental reports on anomalously low diffusion prefactors.

Abstract: of the Disclosure Method of toughening the structure of a diamond or diamond-like coated tool, by the steps of: (a) depositing, by low pressure CVD, a plurality of layers of separated diamond or diamond-like particles onto a nondiamond or nondiamond-like tool substrate (i.e., SiAlON, Si3N4, SiC, Si, Ti, Co cemented WC, TiC, Ni-Mo cemented TiCN), the substrate being selected to facilitate diamond or diamond-like deposition and to retain its strength-related properties after such CVD; and (b) interposing a mechanically adherent, planarized binding material (i.e. transition metals, silicon, boron) between and on said layers of particles and across the separated particles of each particle layer, said binding material being substantially devoid of diamond graphitizing or dissolution agents. A barrier layer is deposited onto said tool substrate prior to step (a) to prevent the egress of chemicals capable of graphitizing diamond or diamond-like particles. The total thickness of the coating structure is about 50-125 microns.

Abstract: A model predictive control (MPC) approach to active steering is presented for autonomous vehicle systems. The controller is designed to stabilize a vehicle along a desired path while rejecting wind gusts and fulfilling its physical constraints. Simulation results of a side wind rejection scenario and a double lane change maneuver on slippery surfaces show the benefits of the systematic control methodology used. A trade-off between the vehicle speed and the required preview on the desired path for vehicle stabilization is highlighted.

Abstract: Organic aerosol formation during the atmospheric oxidation of toluene was investigated using smog chamber systems. Toluene oxidation was initiated by the UV irradiation of either toluene/air/NOx or toluene/air/CH3ONO/NO mixtures. Aerosol formation was monitored using scanning mobility particle sizers and toluene loss was monitored by in-situ FTIR spectroscopy or GC-FID techniques. The experimental results show that the reaction of OH radicals, NO3 radicals and/or ozone with the first generation products of toluene oxidation are sources of organic aerosol during the atmospheric oxidation of toluene. The aerosol results fall into two groups, aerosol formed in the absence and presence of ozone. An analytical expression for aerosol formation is developed and values are obtained for the yield of the aerosol species. In the absence of ozone the aerosol yield, defined as aerosol formed per unit toluene consumed once a threshold for aerosol formation has been exceeded, is 0.075 ± 0.004.
