TL;DR: In this paper, a nonlinear control strategy is proposed, consisting of a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller and a feedback compensator for friction and limp-home effects.
Abstract: An electronic throttle is a low-power dc servo drive which positions the throttle plate. Its application in modern automotive engines leads to improvements in vehicle drivability, fuel economy, and emissions. Transmission friction and the return spring limp-home nonlinearity significantly affect the electronic throttle performance. The influence of these effects is analyzed by means of computer simulations, experiments, and analytical calculations. A dynamic friction model is developed in order to adequately capture the experimentally observed characteristics of the presliding-displacement and breakaway effects. The linear part of electronic throttle process model is also analyzed and experimentally identified. A nonlinear control strategy is proposed, consisting of a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller and a feedback compensator for friction and limp-home effects. The PID controller parameters are analytically optimized according to the damping optimum criterion. The proposed control strategy is verified by computer simulations and experiments.

TL;DR: In this article, measurements of instantaneous heat transfer rates from the working fluid to the cylinder head of a small open-chamber, four-stroke, compressionignition engine have been made at five points on the surface, using a new form of thin-film thermocouple.
Abstract: Measurements of instantaneous heat transfer rates from the working fluid to the cylinder head of a small open-chamber, four-stroke, compression-ignition engine have been made at five points on the surface, using a new form of thin-film thermocouple. These observations demonstrate that flux magnitude and the form of flux variation during the cycle depend greatly on local conditions. Some of the observed phenomena are explained qualitatively. Finally, some results are presented of an analysis of fluxes averaged over all five locations, in terms of the bulk mean properties of the working fluid. It is shown that some compensation for the non-steady nature of the situation may be given by adding to the usual type of quasi-steady relation a term involving the time derivative of the bulk mean temperature.

TL;DR: In this paper, the position of one or more valves and throttles may be adjusted based on the selective deactivation to reduce back-flow through the disabled cylinders while also maintaining conditions of a downstream exhaust catalyst.
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for selecting a group of cylinders for selective deactivation, in a variable displacement engine system, based at least on a regeneration state of an exhaust catalyst. The position of one or more valves and throttles may be adjusted based on the selective deactivation to reduce back-flow through the disabled cylinders while also maintaining conditions of a downstream exhaust catalyst. Pre-ignition and knock detection windows and thresholds may also be adjusted based on the deactivation to improve the efficiency of knock and pre-ignition detection.
