Abstract: The use of computers in organizations is discussed in terms of its present and potential roles in facilitating and mediating communication between people. This approach clarifies the impact that computers may have on the operation of organizations and on the individuals comprising them. Communication, which is essential to collaborative activities, must be properly controlled to protect individual and group privacy, which is equally essential. Our present understanding of the human and organizational aspects of controlling communication and access to information lags behind our technical ability to implement the controls that may be needed.

Abstract: An efficient adaptive encoding technique using a new implementation of the Fast Discrete Cosine Transform (FDCT) for bandwidth compression of monochrome and color images is described. Practical system application is attained by maintaining a balance between complexity of implementation and performance. FDCT sub-blocks are sorted into four classes according to level of image activity, measured by the total ac energy within each sub-block. Adaptivity is provided by distributing bits between classes, favoring higher levels of activity over lower levels. Excellent performance is demonstrated in terms of mean square error and direct comparison of original and reconstructed images. Results are presented for both noiseless and noisy transmission at a total rate of 1 bit and 0.5 bit per pixel for a monochrome image and for a total rate of 2 bits and 1 bit per pixel for a color image. In every case the total bit rate includes all overhead required for image reconstruction and bit protection.

Abstract: The catalytic treatment of motor vehicle exhaust gas has been a feature of all passenger cars in the USA since the 1975 model year. It has since been adopted in all the developed countries as the principal means of con-trolling the emissions from vehicles powered by Otto-cycle internal com-bustion engines. These include passenger cars, light trucks, and heavy-duty trucks. Catalysts have been developed for motorcycles and even smaller power plants. The so-called three-way catalyst (TWC) has been in use since the 1979 model year. The name reflects the simultaneous treatment by this catalyst of the two reducing pollutants, carbon monoxide and uncombusted hydrocarbons, and the oxidizing pollutant, oxides of nitrogen.

Abstract: Executive Overview Toyota's Production System (TPS) is based on “lean” principles including a focus on the customer, continual improvement and quality through waste reduction, and tightly integrated upstream and downstream processes as part of a lean value chain. Most manufacturing companies have adopted some type of “lean initiative,” and the lean movement recently has gone beyond the shop floor to white-collar offices and is even spreading to service industries. Unfortunately, most of these efforts represent limited, piecemeal approaches—quick fixes to reduce lead time and costs and to increase quality—that almost never create a true learning culture. We outline and illustrate the management principles of TPS that can be applied beyond manufacturing to any technical or service process. It is a true systems approach that effectively integrates people, processes, and technology—one that must be adopted as a continual, comprehensive, and coordinated effort for change and learning across the organization.
