Abstract: Metamodeling approach has been widely used due to the high computational cost of using high-fidelity simulations in engineering design. The accuracy of metamodels is directly related to the experimental designs used. Optimal experimental designs have been shown to have good “space filling” and projective properties. However, the high cost in constructing them limits their use. In this paper, a new algorithm for constructing optimal experimental designs is developed. There are two major developments involved in this work. One is on developing an efficient global optimal search algorithm, named as enhanced stochastic evolutionary (ESE) algorithm. The other is on developing efficient algorithms for evaluating optimality criteria. The proposed algorithm is compared to two existing algorithms and is found to be much more efficient in terms of the computation time, the number of exchanges needed for generating new designs, and the achieved optimality criteria. The algorithm is also very flexible to construct various classes of optimal designs to retain certain structural properties.Copyright © 2003 by ASME

Abstract: An automatic headlamp dimmer system for switching a vehicle's headlamps from high beam to low beam when lights from another vehicle are detected in front of the vehicle. To prevent spurious responses to reflected light from signs and other sources, the dimmer system includes a light detector which is responsive only to infrared light. Also, unwanted responses to flashing lights are avoided by detecting the presence of a periodically varying light signal, and inhibiting switching between high and low beams in response thereto. The system is also capable of sensing the activation of windshield wipers and preventing headlamp switching caused by interruption of light to the system's light sensor by action of the wiper blades.

Abstract: Rationale: The robust advances in pain management for companion animals underlie the decision of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) to expand on the information provided in the 2007 AAHA/AAFP Pain Management Guidelines. The 2015 Guidelines summarize and offer a discriminating review of much of this new knowledge. Relevance: Pain management is central to veterinary practice, alleviating pain, improving patient outcomes, and enhancing both quality of life and the veterinarian‐client‐patient relationship. These Guidelines support veterinarians in incorporating pain management into practice, improving patient care. Approaches: The management of pain requires a continuum of care that includes anticipation, early intervention, and evaluation of response on an individual patient basis. A team-oriented approach, including the owner, is essential for maximizing the recognition, prevention and treatment of pain in animals. Evidence base: The Guidelines include both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic modalities to manage pain; they are evidence-based insofar as possible and otherwise represent a consensus of expert opinion. Behavioral changes are currently the principal indicator of pain and its course of improvement or progression, and the basis for recently validated pain scores. Post-surgical pain is eminently predictable but a strong body of evidence exists supporting strategies to mitigate adaptive as well as maladaptive forms. Chronic pain is dominated by degenerative joint disease (DJD), which is one of the most significant and under-diagnosed diseases of cats and dogs. DJD is ubiquitous, found in pets of all ages, and inevitably progresses over time; evidence-based strategies for management are established in dogs, and emerging in cats.

Abstract: The effect of SiC volume fraction and particle size on the fatigue behavior of 2080 Al was investigated. Matrix microstructure in the composite and the unreinforced alloy was held relatively constant by the introduction of a deformation stage prior to aging. It was found that increasing volume fraction and decreasing particle size resulted in an increase in fatigue resistance. Mechanisms responsible for this behavior are described in terms of load transfer from the matrix to the high stiffness reinforcement, increasing obstacles for dislocation motion in the form of S’ precipitates, and the decrease in strain localization with decreasing reinforcement interparticle spacing as a result of reduced particle size. Microplasticity was also observed in the composite, in the form of stress-strain hysteresis loops, and is related to stress concentrations at the poles of the reinforcement. Finally, intermetallic inclusions in the matrix acted as fatigue crack initiation sites. The effect of inclusion size and location on fatigue life of the composites is discussed.
