Abstract: The insecticidal activity of phytochemicals isolated from the roots of Phryma leptostachya var. asiatica against third instar larvae of Culex pipiens pallens, Aedes aegypti, and Ocheratatos togoi was examined. The two constituents of P. leptostachya var. asiatica roots were identified as the leptostachyol acetate (I) and 8‘-acetoxy-2,2‘,6-trimethoxy-3,4,4‘,5‘-dimethylenedioxyphenyl-7,7‘-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane (II) by spectroscopic analysis. Compound I was lethal to C. pipiens pallens, A. aegypti, and O. togoi at 10 ppm. Compound II showed weak or no insecticidal activity against three mosquito species at 10 ppm. The LC50 values of I against C. pipiens pallens, A. aegypti, and O. togoi were 0.41, 2.1, and 2.3 ppm, respectively. Naturally occurring P. leptostachya var. asiatica root-derived compounds merit further study as potential mosquito larval control agents or lead compounds. Abstract: Release rates of a blend of monoterpenes (spruce blend) and ethanol significantly affected mean trap catch of Tetropium fuscum (F.), Tetropium castaneum L., and Tetropium cinnamopterum Kirby. Addition of an ethanol lure to traps baited with the spruce blend lure was necessary to attract T. castaneum and T. cinnamopterum and significantly increased attraction of T. fuscum. The combination of spruce blend and ethanol at high release rates had the highest mean catch of Tetropium spp. and was the only lure treatment that resulted in capture of T. fuscum and T. castaneum (in Poland) in every test block, suggesting it would be the best for detection surveys among the lures tested. The effect of trap design on mean catch of T. fuscum was inconsistent. In one experiment, the larger collapsible cross-vane Colossus trap caught about twice as many beetles as the IPM-Intercept trap, but in two other experiments, mean catch did not differ significantly. Abstract: We studied the effects of light generated by LEDs on the growth of Tsururindo (Tripterospermum japonicum) shoots. Apical shoots (2–3 cm long) were cultured on MS basal media supplemented with 3% sucrose, and were maintained for four weeks under five different light qualities: F (fluorescent lamp), red LED (R), 70% red + 30% blue LED (R7B3), 50% red + 50% blue (R5B5), or blue LED (B). Rooting was promoted by red light (100%) but was inhibited by blue light. Plant growth, as defined by root number, fresh weight, and chlorophyll content, was generally healthier for cultures irradiated with mixed LEDs, and was the best under R7B3. Ventilation resulted in more rapid apical shoot growth and rooting compared with control plants, when both were treated with the R7B3 system. We demonstrated here that plant growth can be controlled by using LEDs to adjust for the most effective irradiation conditions, compared with the performance observed when conventional fluorescent lamps are utilized.
