Abstract: The widespread use of artificial nestboxes has led to significant advances in our knowledge of the ecology, behaviour and physiology of cavity nesting birds, especially small passerines. Nestboxes have made it easier to perform routine monitoring and experimental manipulation of eggs or nestlings, and also repeatedly to capture, identify and manipulate the parents. However, when comparing results across study sites the use of nestboxes may also introduce a potentially significant confounding variable in the form of differences in nestbox design amongst studies, such as their physical dimensions, placement height, and the way in which they are constructed and maintained. However, the use of nestboxes may also introduce an unconsidered and potentially significant confounding variable due to differences in nestbox design amongst studies, such as their physical dimensions, placement height, and the way in which they are constructed and maintained. Here we review to what extent the characteristics of artificial nestboxes (e.g. size, shape, construction material, colour) are documented in the 'methods' sections of publications involving hole-nesting passer- ine birds using natural or excavated cavities or artificial nestboxes for reproduction and roosting. Despite explicit previ- ous recommendations that authors describe in detail the characteristics of the nestboxes used, we found that the description of nestbox characteristics in most recent publications remains poor and insufficient. We therefore list the types of descriptive data that should be included in the methods sections of relevant manuscripts and justify this by discussing how variation in nestbox characteristics can affect or confound conclusions from nestbox studies. We also propose several recommendations to improve the reliability and usefulness of research based on long-term studies of any secondary hole-nesting species using artificial nestboxes for breeding or roosting.

Abstract: Soil respiration constitutes the second largest flux of carbon (C) between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. This study provides a synthesis of soil respiration (R s) in 20 European grasslands across a climatic transect, including ten meadows, eight pastures and two unmanaged grasslands. Maximum rates of R s ( $$ R_{{{\text{s}}_{{{\text{max}}}} }} $$ ), R s at a reference soil temperature (10°C; $$ R_{{{\text{s}}_{{{\text{10}}}} }} $$ ) and annual R s (estimated for 13 sites) ranged from 1.9 to 15.9 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1, 0.3 to 5.5 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 and 58 to 1988 g C m−2 y−1, respectively. Values obtained for Central European mountain meadows are amongst the highest so far reported for any type of ecosystem. Across all sites $$ R_{{{\text{s}}_{{{\text{max}}}} }} $$ was closely related to $$ R_{{{\text{s}}_{{{\text{10}}}} }} $$ . Assimilate supply affected R s at timescales from daily (but not necessarily diurnal) to annual. Reductions of assimilate supply by removal of aboveground biomass through grazing and cutting resulted in a rapid and a significant decrease of R s. Temperature-independent seasonal fluctuations of R s of an intensively managed pasture were closely related to changes in leaf area index (LAI). Across sites $$ R_{{{\text{s}}_{{{\text{10}}}} }} $$ increased with mean annual soil temperature (MAT), LAI and gross primary productivity (GPP), indicating that assimilate supply overrides potential acclimation to prevailing temperatures. Also annual R s was closely related to LAI and GPP. Because the latter two parameters were coupled to MAT, temperature was a suitable surrogate for deriving estimates of annual R s across the grasslands studied. These findings contribute to our understanding of regional patterns of soil C fluxes and highlight the importance of assimilate supply for soil CO2 emissions at various timescales.

Abstract: A meta-analysis of soil incubation studies from the permafrost zone suggests that thawing under aerobic conditions, which releases CO2, will strengthen the permafrost carbon feedback more than waterlogged systems, which releases CO2 and CH4. Increasing temperatures in northern high latitudes are causing permafrost to thaw1, making large amounts of previously frozen organic matter vulnerable to microbial decomposition2. Permafrost thaw also creates a fragmented landscape of drier and wetter soil conditions3,4 that determine the amount and form (carbon dioxide (CO2), or methane (CH4)) of carbon (C) released to the atmosphere. The rate and form of C release control the magnitude of the permafrost C feedback, so their relative contribution with a warming climate remains unclear5,6. We quantified the effect of increasing temperature and changes from aerobic to anaerobic soil conditions using 25 soil incubation studies from the permafrost zone. Here we show, using two separate meta-analyses, that a 10 °C increase in incubation temperature increased C release by a factor of 2.0 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.8 to 2.2). Under aerobic incubation conditions, soils released 3.4 (95% CI, 2.2 to 5.2) times more C than under anaerobic conditions. Even when accounting for the higher heat trapping capacity of CH4, soils released 2.3 (95% CI, 1.5 to 3.4) times more C under aerobic conditions. These results imply that permafrost ecosystems thawing under aerobic conditions and releasing CO2 will strengthen the permafrost C feedback more than waterlogged systems releasing CO2 and CH4 for a given amount of C.

Abstract: Objective The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of the moderate-affinity, uncompetitive N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist, memantine, versus placebo in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer disease (AD). Method This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial conducted at 42 U.S. sites. Participants were 403 outpatients with mild to moderate AD and Mini-Mental State Examination scores of 10–22 randomized to memantine (20 mg/day; N=201) or placebo (N=202) for 24 weeks. Primary outcomes were change from baseline at 24 weeks on the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale–Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-cog), a measure of cognition, and on the Clinician's Interview-Based Impression of Change Plus Caregiver Input (CIBIC-Plus), a global measure. Secondary outcomes included change on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) and the Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study Activities of Daily Living Inventory (ADCS-ADL 23 ), measures of behavior and function, respectively. Results Most (82.4%) participants completed the trial. Memantine resulted in significantly better outcomes than placebo on measures of cognition, global status, and behavior when based on the protocol-specified primary last observation carried forward imputation as well as a mixed-models repeated-measures approach applied to the continuous outcomes. Treatment discontinuations because of adverse events for memantine versus placebo were 19 (9.5%) and 10 (5.0%), respectively. Conclusions These results support the safety and efficacy of memantine for the treatment of mild to moderate AD.
