TL;DR: Investigations have led to the isolation of dialysable glycopeptides, which produce the common antigenicity of structural glycoproteins extracted from human or bovine heart valves and parietal polysaccharides of haematolytic group A streptococci.
Abstract: THERE is evidence of immunological cross-reaction between structural glycoproteins extracted from human or bovine heart valves and parietal polysaccharides of haematolytic group A streptococci1,2. Further investigations have led to the isolation of dialysable glycopeptides, which produce the common antigenicity.

TL;DR: The results indicate that the RNA polymerase is bound to the DNA in the aggregate enzyme as part of an initiation or transcription complex, and the small amount of A-U-rich RNA which is synthesized at 37° is immediately destroyed by degradative enzymes, whereas the G-C-richRNA is much more resistant.

TL;DR: Although it was able to confirm that rat liver chromatin was capable of binding as many RNA polymerase molecules as deproteinized rat liver DNA, a relative increase in the template efficiency of the chromatin as its concentration was decreased in the incubation mixture brings into question the exact physiological meaning of the template properties of isolated rat liver Chromatin.

TL;DR: The thyroid of an 8-yr-old girl with a congenital goiter without hypothyroidism has been studied: this defect explained the presence of free iodotyrosines in blood and urine.
Abstract: The thyroid of an 8-yr-old girl with a congenital goiter without hypothyroidism has been studied. She presented the same biochemical symptoms as her brother, whose goiter was studied previously (J Clin Endocr 27: 185, 1967). Iodinated serum proteins, of which an iodinated iodothyronine-containing serum albumin was the major component, were the predominant soluble iodinated proteins of the goiter. Poorly iodinated thyroglobulin accounted for only around 10% of total goiter iodoproteins. Qualitative and quantitative immunoprecipitation tests performed on the total soluble 14C-proteins synthesized during in vitro incubation of goiter slices in the presence of 14C-aminoacids failed to show the synthesis of 14C-serum albumin. A lack of DIT-deiodinating activity of the thyroid tissue in vitro has also been demonstrated: this defect explained the presence of free iodotyrosines in blood and urine. In this type of familial goiter, which combines 2 abnormalities (decrease or absence of thyroglobulin synthe...

TL;DR: Values for the concentrations of oxidized and reduced pyridine nucleotides in rat liver and in rat and human blood are presented and are in fairly good agreement with those of Lowry.
Abstract: A fluorometric method is described for the estimation of di- and triphosphopyridine nucleotides (oxidized and reduced) in animal tissues. The continuous cycling reduction of DPN+ (or TPN+) in the presence of excess of ethanol and alcohol dehydrogenase (or glucose-6-phosphate and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) was coupled with non enzymatic reoxidation of pyridine nucleotides with phenazine methosulfate. Phenazine methosulfate reduced the non fluorescent compound, resazurine to the highly fluorescent compound, resorufine. The rate of production of resorufine is proportionnal to the concentration of pyridine nucleotides. The procedure is relatively simple and requires only two commercial enzyme preparations for complete determination. This method can be used for estimation of pyridine nucleotides in concentrations as low as 0.1 μM and quantities as small as 10 pmoles. The acid and alkaline extraction procedure was carried out essentially according to the method of Lowry. Conditions affecting the specificity, accuracy and reliability have been studied. During extraction, interfering material is formed, inhibiting the rate of reduction. A calibration procedure is described which overcomes this difficulty. Values for the concentrations of oxidized and reduced pyridine nucleotides in rat liver and in rat and human blood are presented and are in fairly good agreement with those of Lowry.

TL;DR: In vivo and in vitro experiments give evidence for the existence in the endometrium of tight binding site(s) having a capacity equivalent to tissue concentration and suggest the presence of other types of binding that are looser and of much larger capacity and operative at estradiol concentrations greater than the physiological level.
Abstract: After the injection of a physiological dose of radioactive estradiol, the endometrium of the castrated rat displays a greater uptake (per unit of weight or per cell) and a longer retention of the hormone than does the myometrium. In vivo and in vitro experiments give evidence for the existence in the endometrium of tight binding site(s) having a capacity equivalent to tissue concentration of approximately 7 x 10-9 M (in vitro) or 1 x 10-8 M (in vivo, after injection of 0.1 µg, a physiological dose). A tentative "tissue affinity constant" of approximately 7 x 1011 M-1 has been calculated from the results of in vitro experiments at very low estradiol concentrations. The results also suggest, in both endometrium and myometrium, the presence of other types of binding that are looser and of much larger capacity and operative at estradiol concentrations greater than the physiological level.

TL;DR: The authors report on the results obtained by use of a microradiographic technique in the examination of brain arteries, compared with other methods of morphological study of the white matter in the frontal lobe, optic radiations and the corpus callosum cerebral circulation.
Abstract: Publisher Summary The recent development of carotid and vertebral arteriography, the use of photographic techniques such as subtraction or logetron now enable us to study blood vessels of under 0.5 mm in diameter. By these means there is now an opportunity of examining on the angiogram the area of the lenticulo-striate or thalamic arteries, the meningeal blood vessels and the branches of the ophthalmic artery. These concepts of vascular anatomy can only be developed if our arteriographic data are compared with opaque injections or any other method of studying cerebral arteries where the results can be used for normal reference purposes. Among these methods, radiopaque injections with the possibility of microradiography hold an important place. The authors report on the results obtained by use of a microradiographic technique in the examination of brain arteries. They illustrate their report with some examples relating to vascularisation. This technique is compared with other methods of morphological study of the white matter in the frontal lobe, optic radiations and the corpus callosum cerebral circulation.
