Abstract: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) typically involves oxygen (O2 ) consumption and therefore suffers from greatly limited anticancer therapeutic efficacy in tumor hypoxia. Here, it is reported for the first time that amine-terminated, PAMAM dendrimer-encapsulated gold nanoclusters (AuNCs-NH2 ) can produce O2 for PDT via their intrinsic catalase-like activity. The AuNCs-NH2 not only show optimum H2 O2 consumption via the catalase-like activity over the physiological pH range (i.e., pH 4.8-7.4), but also extend such activity to acidic conditions. The possible mechanism is deduced from that the enriched tertiary amines of dendrimers are easily protonated in acidic solutions to facilitate the preadsorption of OH on the metal surface, thereby favorably triggering the catalase-like reaction. By taking advantage of the exciting feature on AuNCs-NH2 , the possibility to supply O2 via the catalase-like activity of AuNCs-NH2 for PDT against hypoxia of cancer cells was further studied. This proof-of-concept study provides a simple way to combine current O2 -dependent cancer therapy of PDT to overcome cancer cell hypoxia, thus achieving more effective anticancer treatments.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the process gamma gamma* -> pi(0) with a 759 fb(-1) data sample recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. The pion transition form factor, F(Q(2)), is measured for the kinematical region 4 GeV2 <= Q(2) <= 40 GeV2, where -Q(2) is the invariant-mass squared of a virtual photon. The measured values of Q(2)vertical bar F(Q(2))vertical bar agree well with the previous measurements below Q(2) similar or equal to 9 GeV2 but do not exhibit the rapid growth in the higher Q(2) region seen in another recent measurement, which exceeds the asymptotic QCD expectation by as much as 50%.

Abstract: The present case–control study was to investigate the relationships of plasma leptin level and anthropometric measures of adiposity with the risk of breast cancer. Questionnaire information, anthropometric measures and blood samples were taken before treatment from 297 incident cases with breast cancer and 593 controls admitted for health examination at the Tri-Service General Hospital, Taipei, between 2004 and 2006. Plasma levels of leptin were measured by RIA. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for assessing the associations. Overall, higher leptin concentrations were significantly associated with an increased risk of breast cancer (OR (95% CI) for top vs bottom tertile of leptin was 1.63 (1.07–2.49), Ptrend=0.009). Waist circumference was a significant anthropometric factor for breast cancer in both pre- and postmenopausal women. Furthermore, the associations of leptin with breast cancer risk remained after adjustment for obesity indices. These results suggest that leptin may have an independent role in breast tumorigenesis. Regardless of the impact of circulating leptin, more research is needed to elucidate molecular mechanisms and local leptin levels that are critical for the development of breast cancers.
