Lipid Oxidative Stability of Reconstituted Partially Defatted Peanuts

Abstract: Changes in tocopherol content, peroxide value and fatty acid composition were measured during storage of reconstituted partially defatted peanuts. These values were compared with those of unreconstituted partially defatted peanuts, whole peanuts and the corresponding oils. Reconstitution effectively inactivated the enzyme lipoxygenase and was destructive on tocopherols, particularly α- tocopherol. The stability of the oil during storage, as measured by the peroxide value, is much greater within the peanuts than in the corresponding extracted oil. No changes in fatty acid composition could be observed in reconstituted partially defatted peanuts. A need for immediate reconstitution following mechanical oil extraction could not be demonstrated as both products had equal oxidative stability.

Polio and Lameness in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Abstract: This survey for residual paralysis among rural and urban children in Central Java shows an overall rate for polio lameness of 9/10 000 children. A recent rise in reported cases of acute poliomyelitis is reflected in paralysis rate among preschool children of 22/10 000. Three quarters of cases occur before the third birthday. A majority of children below age 3 are lacking antibody titres to one or more types of polio virus, demonstrating the need for mass immunisation. A simple questionnaire detected polio cases with a sensitivity of 84%.

Some methodological considerations in the analysis of current status data.

Abstract: Recent attention has focused on the length of the post partum period of infecundity in those societies where child-spacing has traditionally been achieved through post partum sexual abstinence or prolonged breast-feeding. The tabulation of proportions of women abstaining at interview by the age of the youngest child has been suggested as a technique free of problems of digital preference and memory lapse, while being otherwise equivalent to the distribution of the proportion of women abstaining by completed months since their last confinement, calculated from retrospectively-collected durations of abstinence. Both stochastic and deterministic models demonstrate that the techniques are comparable only when they are applied to non-recurrent events such as first marriage. Abstract: Masyarakat perundagian telah mencapai tata kehidupan yang teratur.Kemajuan-kemajuan muncul di segala bidang, baik yang berkaitan dengan usaha untuk meningkatkan kesejahteraan hidup, kesenian maupun kepercayaan. Masyarakat masa ini telah membentuk desa-desa yang luas. Salah satu contoh desa masa tersebut telah ditemukan dalam ekskavasi di pantai Gilimanuk, Bali (R.P. Soejono, 1977a: 260). Dari jenis-jenis temuan yang berasal dari situs tersebut di atas, di~roleh gambaran tentang salah satu tata kehidupan masyarakat perundagian, khususnya yang bertempat tinggal di tepi pantai. Dari temuan yang berupa sisa-sisa makanan serta bekas-bekas benda keperluan sehari-hari, dapat diperoleh petunjuk bahwa kehidupan masyarakat di daerah itu, adalah sebagai nelayan (R.P. Soejono, 1977b: 271).
