Abstract: Preparation of membrane using crosslinking reaction between chitosan and citric acid showed that functional group modification increased the number of active carrier groups which lead to better transport capacity of the membrane. In addition, the substitution of the carboxyl group increased creatinine permeation of chitosan membrane. The transport capacity of citric acid crosslinked chitosan membrane for creatinine was found to be 6.3 mg/L. The presence of cyanocobalamin slightly hindered the transport of creatinine although compounds did not able to pass through citric acid crosslinked chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) blend membrane, as compounds no found in the acceptor phase.

Abstract: Palm sugar is highly produced and patronised in the south-eastern part of Asia, e.g. Indonesia which is also the world’s third largest cocoa producer. Recently, interest in palm sugar sweetened chocolate and better approaches for production methods that can be easily applied in developing countries are rising. This work investigated the influence of palm sugar on the quality attributes of dark chocolate in terms of fineness, rheological behaviour and aroma profile compared to that of sucrose. Furthermore, a small-scale processing approach using the combination of Stephan mixer and ball mill compared to the conventional method was investigated. The results showed that palm sugar sweetened chocolate exhibited a higher viscosity, a higher particle volume fraction and a higher degree of particle agglomeration due to its relatively high moisture and presence of glucose and fructose. Furthermore, chocolates sweetened with palm sugar displayed a distinctive aroma profile with the abundant presence of 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one and pyrazine-based compounds. Applying the alternative processing method leaded to the production of chocolate with rather high degree of agglomeration and viscosity as compared to chocolate produced by means of conventional processing. Moreover, the alternative processing method resulted in the presence of myrcene, β-trans-ocimene and isoamyl acetate which were not observed in the conventionally produced chocolates. The alternative processing method, however, seems to have potential for small-scale production of dark chocolate sweetened with palm sugar.

Abstract: Quantification of metal droplets ejected due to impinging gas jet on the surface of liquid metal is an important parameter for the understanding and for the modeling of the refining kinetics of reactions in slag-metal emulsion zone. In the present work, a numerical study has been carried out to critically examine the applicability of droplet generation rate correlation previously proposed by Subagyo et al. on the basis of dimensionless blowing number (N
B). The blowing number was re-evaluated at the impingement point of jet with taking into account the temperature effect of change in density and velocity of the gas jet. The result obtained from the work shows that the modified blowing number N
B,T at the furnace temperature of 1873 K (1600 °C) is approximately double in magnitude compared to N
B calculated by Subagyo and co-workers. When N
B,T has been employed to the Subagyo’s empirical correlation for droplet generation, a wide mismatch is observed between the experimental data obtained from cold model and hot model experiments. The reason for this large deviation has been investigated in the current study, and a theoretical approach to estimate the droplet generation rate has been proposed. The suitability of the proposed model has been tested by numerically calculating the amount of metals in slag. The study shows that the weight of metals in emulsion falls in the range of 0 to 21 wt pct of hot metal weight when droplet generation rate has been calculated at ambient furnace temperature of 1873 K (1600 °C).

Abstract: The red palm weevil (RPW, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), one of the most widespread of all invasive insect pest species, is a major cause of severe damage to economically important palm trees. RPW exhibits behaviors very similar to those of its sympatric species, the Asian palm weevil (R. vulneratus), which is restricted geographically to the southern part of Southeast Asia. Although efficient and sustainable control of these pests remains challenging, olfactory-system disruption has been proposed as a promising approach for controlling palm weevils. Here, we report the cloning and sequencing of an olfactory co-receptor (Orco) from R. ferrugineus (RferOrco) and R. vulneratus (RvulOrco) and examine the effects of RferOrco silencing (RNAi) on odorant detection. RferOrco and RvulOrco encoding 482 amino acids showing 99.58% identity. The injection of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) from RferOrco into R. ferrugineus pupae significantly reduced RferOrco gene expression and led to the failure of odor-stimulus detection, as confirmed through olfactometer and electroantennography (EAG) assays. These results suggest that olfactory-system disruption leading to reduced pheromone detection holds great potential for RPW pest-control strategies.

Abstract: Simultaneous adsorption of Zn(II) and Hg(II) in the presence of alkaline earth metal, Mg(II) on dithizone-immobilized bentonite has been done by batch method. The study was begun by activation of natural bentonite with HCl followed by immobilization of dithizone on bentonite surface. Some parameters influencing the adsorption such as pH, interaction time and initial concentration of metal ions were optimized. Types of interaction between metal ions and adsorbent were assessed by conducting sequential desorption of the adsorbed metals using H2O, KNO3, HONH2HCl and Na2EDTA. XRD and FTIR characterizations suggest that dithizone has been successfully immobilized on the surface of bentonite. Optimum conditions for simultaneous adsorption of Hg(II) and Zn(II) in the presence of Mg(II) are at pH 6 and interaction time of 60 minutes. Capacity, affinity and selectivity of dithizone immobilized bentonite towards Hg(II) and Zn(II) are better than those of non-immobilized activated natural bentonite, but the interaction types of the two metal ions with adsorbents are different. Zn(II) ion mostly interacts with adsorbents through physical and electrostatic interactions, while Hg(II) ion interacts via hydrogen bond and complexation. Upon immobilization of dithizone on the surface of bentonite, the interaction of Hg(II) with adsorbent changes significantly from hydrogen bond to complexation. Moreover, the presence of Mg(II) ion gives no significant influence on metal adsorption, indicating that dithizone-immobilized bentonite is quite selective towards heavy metal ions.
