Abstract: The brain has an unusually high concentration of iron, which is distributed in an unusual pattern unlike that in any other organ. The physiological role of this iron and the reasons for this pattern of distribution are not yet understood. There is increasing evidence that several neurodegenerative diseases are associated with altered brain iron metabolism. Understanding these dysmetabolic conditions may provide important information for their diagnosis and treatment. For many years the iron distribution in the human brain could be studied effectively only under postmortem conditions. This situation was changed dramatically by the finding that T2-weighted MR imaging at high field strength (initially 1.5 T) appears to demonstrate the pattern of iron distribution in normal brains and that this imaging technique can detect changes in brain iron concentrations associated with disease states. Up to the present time this imaging capability has been utilized in many research applications but it has not yet been widely applied in the routine diagnosis and management of neurodegenerative disorders. However, recent advances in the basic science of brain iron metabolism, the clinical understanding of neurodegenerative diseases and in MRI technology, particularly in the availability of clinical scanners operating at the higher field strength of 3 T, suggest that iron-dependent MR imaging may soon provide biomarkers capable of characterizing the presence and progression of important neurological disorders. Such biomarkers may be of crucial assistance in the development and utilization of effective new therapies for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, multiple sclerosis and other iron-related CNS disorders which are difficult to diagnose and treat. Abstract: Both random Fourier features and the Nystrom method have been successfully applied to efficient kernel learning. In this work, we investigate the fundamental difference between these two approaches, and how the difference could affect their generalization performances. Unlike approaches based on random Fourier features where the basis functions (i.e., cosine and sine functions) are sampled from a distribution independent from the training data, basis functions used by the Nystrom method are randomly sampled from the training examples and are therefore data dependent. By exploring this difference, we show that when there is a large gap in the eigen-spectrum of the kernel matrix, approaches based on the Nystrom method can yield impressively better generalization error bound than random Fourier features based approach. We empirically verify our theoretical findings on a wide range of large data sets.

Abstract: Recently a technique for monitoring and diagnosing mechanical problems, associated with rotating machines driven by electric motors, has been proposed and is now being offered by several commercial suppliers. This technique, known as “Motor Current Signature Analysis” or MCSA, seeks to apply much of the long experience in vibration signature analysis to the analysis of motor current in effect using the motor as a sensor akin to an acceleromeier This paper explores some of the history of the technique, presents several examples, and demonstrates a first order approach to the theory with associated cautions.

Abstract: The flow induced by a vortex ring approaching a plane wall on a trajectory normal to the wall is investigated for an incompressible fluid which is otherwise stagnant. The detailed characteristics of the interaction of the ring with the flow near the surface have been observed experimentally for a wide variety of laminar rings, using dye in water to visualize the flow in the ring as well as near the plane surface. Numerical solutions are obtained for the trajectory of the ring as well as for the unsteady boundary-layer flow that develops on the wall. The experimental and theoretical results show that an unsteady separation develops in the boundary-layer flow, in the form of a secondary ring attached to the wall. A period of explosive boundary-layer growth then ensues and a strong viscous-inviscid interaction occurs in the form of the ejection of the secondary vortex ring from the boundary layer. The primary ring then interacts with the secondary ring and in some cases was observed to induce the formation of a third, tertiary, ring near the wall. The details of this process are investigated over a wide Reynolds number range. The results clearly show how one vortex ring can produce another, through an unsteady interaction with a viscous flow near the wall.

Abstract: A multichip integrated circuit package comprises a substrate (10) to which is affixed one or more integrated circuit chips (15a, 15b, 15c) having interconnection pads (16). A polymer film (20) overlying and bridging integrated circuit chips present is provided with a plurality of via openings to accommodate a layer of interconnection metallization (25) which serves to connect various chips and chip pads within the interconnection pads disposed on the chips. A significant advantage of the packaging method and configuration of the present invention is the ability for the polymer film to be removed. This significantly improves testability and effectively provides wafer scale integration circuit packages which are free of problems associated with yield and testability.
