TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine perspectives of university faculty and students currently involved in one medium of distance education, Web-based instruction, and find that the student benefits included meaningful learning of technology through the integration of course content and computer applications, increased access to the most current and global content information available, increased motivation, and convenience.
Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to examine perspectives of university faculty and students currently involved in one medium of distance education, Web-based instruction. Students and faculty were surveyed on the advantages, disadvantages, and general effectiveness of using the Internet as a teaching and learning tool. Findings indicated that the student benefits included (a) meaningful learning of technology through the integration of course content and computer applications, (b) increased access to the most current and global content information available, (c) increased motivation, and (d) convenience. Faculty reported a wide range of challenges in the development and delivery of Web-based instruction. The most frequently identified barriers included (a) lack of technical support, (b) lack of software/adequate equipment, (c) lack of faculty/administrative support, (d) the amount of preparation time required to create assignments, and (e) student resistance. In addition, faculty respondents consistently identified convenience and improved learning as advantages for students enrolled in Web-based instruction.

TL;DR: Using the peak procedure, rats with aspiration lesions to the medial prefrontal cortex (PFC) or the hippocampus were tested for the acquisition of timing behavior and temporal memory and concluded that neither the medial PFC nor the hippocampus is necessary for the memory of temporal events.
Abstract: Using the peak procedure, rats with aspiration lesions to the medial prefrontal cortex (PFC) or the hippocampus were tested for the acquisition of timing behavior and temporal memory. After surgery, rats were 1st trained to discriminate a 40-s interval and then tested for temporal memory with gap trials. Results indicated that lesions to the medial PFC disrupted the acquisition of timing behavior. Medial PFC animals needed significantly more trials to reach criterion, and their temporal discrimination function was less uniform and steep, indicating a general deficit in timing ability. In hippocampal rats, the ability to estimate the duration of the discriminative stimulus was unaffected by the lesion. It was concluded that the hippocampus is not necessary for the acquisition of timing behavior in this task. Gap trials failed to produce a deficit in the memory for temporal events for either lesion. Thus, it was further concluded that neither the medial PFC nor the hippocampus is necessary for the memory of temporal events.

TL;DR: Assessment of response accuracy across reversals revealed enhanced cognitive abilities in both the brain damaged and sham control rats administered ginseng, and administration of the higher dose resulted in better performance in the learning paradigm.
Abstract: ADULT rats were prepared with either sham or medial prefrontal cortex lesions and administered, beginning on the third post-operative day, either, 0, 40, or 80 mg kg -1 crude ginseng extract suspended in saline daily for the next 30 days. Later, kinetic functions were evaluated on an elevated rotating rod. No long-term influences of the treatments were observed on this task. Significant positive influences of ginseng were observed in the position reversal task. The learning deficits observed in the saline control brain-damaged rats were significantly attenuated in the ginseng-treated animals. An analysis of trial 2 response accuracy across reversals revealed enhanced cognitive abilities (i.e. acquisition of a win-stay, lose-shift strategy) in both the brain damaged and sham control rats administered ginseng. Generally, administration of the higher dose resulted in better performance in the learning paradigm. The exact mechanism responsible for these promising results remains to be discovered. Several possible mechanisms are discussed.

TL;DR: This paper analyzed self-reports by incarcerated youths of experiences with violent behavior, and extended research linking bullying behavior in school to later development of antisocial, criminal and gang-related behaviors, concluding that early experiences as a bully in school are significant predictors of later gang membership.
Abstract: This study analyzes self-reports by incarcerated youths of experiences with violent behavior, and extends research linking bullying behavior in school to later development of antisocial, criminal and gang-related behaviors. Abstract: The purpose of the study was to collect a significant body of data describing familial, sociological and personal predictors of violent behavior and gang membership in order to discern implications for identifying, preventing and effectively intervening with such behavior; particular emphasis was placed on defining the relationship between bullying behaviors and later affiliations with gangs. Approximately 10,000 confined offenders from 85 correctional institutions ranging from boot camps to juvenile detention centers and prisons in 17 States were surveyed. The article discusses differences in findings for males and females as well as families characterized by high and low dysfunction. Results indicate that early experiences as a bully in school are significant predictors of later gang membership. Study results support the need for continued research into effective identification and intervention with bullying behavior in young children. (NCJRS Abstract)

TL;DR: The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of family physicians toward nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAS) and the potentially sensitive topics of third-party reimbursement and prescriptive authority.
Abstract: As more health care providers are pursuing advanced education as nurse practitioners and physician assistants, obtaining clinical sites for these students becomes an issue. These students appear in a multitude of settings, including occupational medicine clinics, outpatient clinics, and private offices. With an increasing number of physicians serving as clinical preceptors, perceptions of these preceptors toward the advanced practice role and role preparation will likely impact the educational opportunities provided to the student, and, ultimately, possible employment. In the economic reality of managed care, some argue, fewer physicians will be making employment decisions and, consequently, their preference for one type of provider over another is a moot point. It would seem, however, that preferences borne from misinformation set a milieu for noncollegial relationships, affecting job satisfaction and, ultimately, patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of family physicians toward nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAS). General perceptions of, experience with, and role distinction of NPs and PAS, as well as knowledge of their educational and credentialing requirements, were assessed. Also included were the potentially sensitive topics of third-party reimbursement and prescriptive authority. Sharp contrast in perceptions about these providers was found. Reputation of, more than experience with, NPs appeared to shape perceptions. The perceptions of these family physicians and marked distinctions made between the roles are startling and disturbing, especially for NPs. To ignore the voices of family physicians who shared candidly about their perceptions, albeit based on misinformation, is to be the proverbial “ostrich with his head in the sand.”

TL;DR: In this article, the social accounts of 19 management faculty concerning communication challenges with younger undergraduate students are examined in this interpretive/critical/post structural qualitative inquiry, and the goal of this qualitative study is to encourage more critical awareness or reflexivity of management educators concerning their often taken-for-granted assumptions concerning students and classroom communication potentials.
Abstract: The social accounts of 19 management faculty concerning communication challenges with younger undergraduate students are examined in this interpretive/critical/post structural qualitative inquiry. Key stakeholder groups to the educational process, young undergraduate students, and managers who have hired and supervised recent college graduates are also studied to determine their perceptions of generational communication challenges and their reactions to faculty views. The goal of this qualitative study is to encourage more critical awareness or reflexivity of management educators concerning their often taken-for-granted assumptions concerning students and classroom communication potentials.

TL;DR: A greater role is revealed of the left PPC than the right in the use of local sensory cues for spatial navigation, and the results show that the PPC is not the repository of the “engram” for this learned visuospatial behavior.
Abstract: Rats with sham, unilateral, or bilateral aspiration lesions of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) were trained in a water T-maze to use flashing lights located along the starting alley (two each) and inner walls of the goal alleys (two each) to find a hidden escape platform. Thereafter, the performance of the spatial response was tested under several conditions. Rats with bilateral PPC lesions were significantly inferior to unilateral- and sham-injured rats in learning the “turn-signal” cued spatial task. Also, left-PPC-injured rats committed significantly more errors than did the control animals. After mastering the task, cue saliency was reduced and the amount of spatial discontiguity between the stimuli and escape site was increased in two stages. That is, the flashing light closest to the escape platform was turned off for one testing session. On the following day, animals were required to rely on information located within the starting alley to make the correct spatial response at the choice point. Animals with bilateral or left PPC lesions were significantly impaired on the task with cues located only in the starting alley. The animals were then tested with competing constant illumination of the lights on the side of the apparatus opposite the flashing-light cues. The performance of all animals dropped to chance and failed to improve with training. Finally, three of the sham-operated controls were retrained to criterion on the original discrimination and prepared with bilateral PPC injuries. Substantial savings was observed. The results reveal a greater role of the left PPC than the right in the use of local sensory cues for spatial navigation, and they show that the PPC is not the repository of the “engram” for this learned visuospatial behavior.

TL;DR: In this paper, an innovative approach to course development is introduced that may facilitate the learning process and better prepare students to satisfy the changing needs of their future employers by refocusing on basic business concepts.
Abstract: An innovative approach to course development is introduced that may facilitate the learning process and better prepare students to satisfy the changing needs of their future employers. The uniqueness of this method lies in the refocusing of basic business concepts. For years, functional area emphasis has been construed as the most efficient method to teach introductory business concepts to all business majors. This article suggests that a stakeholder approach could assist learning while meeting goals proposed by accrediting agencies and the general public.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors suggest how teachers can approach the Internet conceptually and use it practically as they teach about the American South by finding the southern part of cyberspace and illustrate that regions can and do have a place in a medium often represented as spaceless and devoid of geographic boundaries.
Abstract: This article suggests how teachers can approach the Internet conceptually and use it practically as they teach about the American South. Because of its information, communication, and cultural dimensions, the Internet represents a “place” where students and teachers can appraise the South from multiple, alternative perspectives. The article offers lesson strategies and resources for both on-computer and off-computer classroom settings. By finding the southern part of cyberspace, the authors illustrate that regions can and do have a place in a medium often represented as spaceless and devoid of geographic boundaries.

TL;DR: The Reiss Screen for Maladaptive Behavior and a modified version of the MMPI-168 were administered to 65 residents of a state mental institution diagnosed with mild or moderate mental retardation and significant correlations were obtained.
Abstract: The Reiss Screen for Maladaptive Behavior and a modified version of the MMPI-168 were administered to 65 residents of a state mental institution diagnosed with mild or moderate mental retardation. Possible associations between the two screening instruments were then examined. Significant correlations were obtained between four scales of the Reiss Screen and Scales F, K, 1, 6, and 7 of the MMPI-168. These results support the clinical efficacy of both instruments in screening for behavioral pathology in mentally retarded persons. However, some scales purported to assess similar psychological constructs failed to show expected positive associations. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Clin Psychol 54: 529–535, 1998.

TL;DR: In this article, an exploratory study was conducted to identify characteristics of employee and alumni programs that appear to influence the marketing value of alumni, and several variables affect an alumnus' identification with and predisposition to benefit the firm.
Abstract: One way accounting firms can identify potential sources of referrals and new business is to look to past employees, or alumni, Although major firms recognize the importance of maintaining relationships with their alumni, no prior research has directly examined alumni systems in CPA firms or other business organizations. Therefore, an exploratory study was conducted to identify characteristics of employee and alumni programs that appear to influence the marketing value of alumni. Results indicate that several variables affect an alumnus' identification with and predisposition to benefit the firm. Suggestions are offered on ways the firm can positively influence these variables. Many implications also apply to other types of professional services firms.
