TL;DR: Men described the relationship between sexual desire and arousal as being variable and complex, presented a wide range of factors that increased or decreased sexual arousal, and showed substantial variability in both the importance and direction of their effects.
Abstract: The goal of this study was to improve our understanding of men’s sexual response and its components as well as the factors or types of situations that men describe as facilitating or interfering with sexual arousal. Six focus groups, involving 50 mostly white, heterosexual men (M age = 35.2 years; range, 18–70), were conducted. As it was previously found in women (Graham, Sanders, Milhausen, & McBride, Archives of Sexual Behavior, 33, 527–538, 2004), men described a wide range of physical (genital as well as nongenital) and cognitive/affective cues for sexual arousal. Also, men described the relationship between sexual desire and arousal as being variable and complex, presented a wide range of factors that increased or decreased sexual arousal, and showed substantial variability in both the importance and direction of their effects. The findings may help further development of models of sexual response and inform discussions about gender differences in sexual desire and arousal.

TL;DR: A meta-analysis of 44 studies that examined the impacts of participation in challenge (ropes) course activities was conducted by as mentioned in this paper, where a medium standardized mean difference effect size was found (d = 0.43).
Abstract: This study reports the results of a meta-analysis of 44 studies that examined the impacts of participation in challenge (ropes) course activities. Overall, a medium standardized mean difference effect size was found (d = 0.43). Effect sizes were calculated for various study characteristics, including demographics and outcome. Higher effects were found for adult groups (d = 0.80) and for studies measuring family functioning (d = 0.67). Studies with therapeutic (d = 0.53) or developmental foci (d = 0.47) had higher effect sizes than those with educational foci (d = 0.17). Higher effect sizes for group effectiveness (d = 0.62) affirmed the use of challenge course experiences for team-building purposes. Implications for further research include the importance of recording detailed program design information, selecting appropriate instrumentation, and including follow-up data.

TL;DR: An overview of academic research on listening in the business environment can be found in this article, where the Business Context Division of the International Forum on Listening Research (IFLR) is designed to foster rigorous listening research among scholars in a variety of academic business fields.
Abstract: For more than 50 years, business professionals and some researchers have held that effective listening is a highly desirable workplace skill (Cooper, 1997; Husband, Cooper, & Monsour, 1988; Nichols & Stevens, 1957; Rogers & Rothlisberger, 1952; Sypher, 1984). However, listening as an organizational variable continues to be seen as a “soft” skill worthy of little attention in the scholarly business literature, in the business classroom, and in organizations (Flynn & Faulk, in press). This paper presents an overview of academic research on listening in the business environment and raises a number of key research questions that guided discussion of the Business Context Division of the International Forum on Listening Research. This work is designed to foster rigorous listening research among scholars in a variety of academic business fields.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors test the hypothesis that the effect of political freedom on promoting economic growth is realized and detectable at later stages of social and economic development using panel data for a sample of 104 countries between 1970 and 2003.
Abstract: In the literature, theory and empirical evidence on the nexus of political freedom, economic freedom, and economic growth are mixed. In this paper, we test the hypothesis that the effect of political freedom on promoting economic growth is realized and detectable at later stages of social and economic development. Using panel data for a sample of 104 countries between 1970 and 2003, we find strong support for our hypothesis. While economic freedom has greater effects on income convergence in the OECD countries, political freedom clearly promotes the convergence among those OECD countries.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate the statistically significant three-year effectiveness of an adventure-based behavior management program (BMtA) with juvenile re-arrest rates when compared to outdoor therapeutic camping programs and standard Youth Development Center (YDC) programs in the State of Georgia.
Abstract: SUMMARY Recent studies analyzing juvenile delinquents participating in wilderness therapy programs have reported little statistical effectiveness. Interpretation of these findings may be unjustified due to definitional confusion more than a clear examination of program effectiveness. Using a research methodology similar to Jones, Lowe, and Risler (2004), this study demonstrates the statistically significant three-year effectiveness of an adventure-based behavior management program (BMtA) with juvenile re-arrest rates when compared to outdoor therapeutic camping programs and standard Youth Development Center (YDC) programs in the State of Georgia. The article also offers clarity concerning the range and types of adventure therapy programs and treatment differences. It further highlights the importance of understanding intervention/treatment fidelity in adventure therapy programs, particularly regarding program settings and key clinical factors.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors combined the results from 95 TAM articles to examine the impact of uncertainty avoidance on national culture and technology acceptance, and found that high level UAP confidence intervals were significantly lower than for the medium-level and low-level UAP groups.
Abstract: This study combined the results from 95 TAM articles to examine the impact of uncertainty avoidance on national culture and technology acceptance. This meta-analysis was based on 342 reviewed TAM articles, of which 95 met the selection criteria of both reported statistics and national culture. Each article was coded for national culture based on the rankings from the works of Hofstede and GLOBE. Overall, hypotheses about uncertainly avoidance practices (UAP) were supported for each correlation. Highlevel UAP confidence intervals were significantly lower than for the medium-level and low-level UAP groups for each of the TAM construct correlations.

TL;DR: Ginger had no clinically meaningful or statistically significant effect on perceptions of muscle pain, RPE, work rate, HR, or VO2 during exercise, and this suggests that prostaglandins do not play a large role in this type of exercise-induced skeletal-muscle pain.
Abstract: Ginger has known hypoalgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The effects of an oral dose of ginger on quadriceps muscle pain, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and recovery of oxygen consumption were examined during and after moderateintensity cycling exercise. Twenty-five college-age participants ingested a 2-g dose of ginger or placebo in a double-blind, crossover design and 30 min later completed 30 min of cycling at 60% of VO2peak. Quadriceps muscle pain, RPE, work rate, heart rate (HR), and oxygen uptake (VO2) were recorded every 5 min during exercise, and HR and VO2 were recorded for 20 min after exercise. Compared with placebo, ginger had no clinically meaningful or statistically significant effect on perceptions of muscle pain, RPE, work rate, HR, or VO2 during exercise. Recovery of VO2 and HR after the 30-min exercise bout followed a similar time course in the ginger and placebo conditions. The results were consistent with related findings showing that ingesting a large dose of aspirin does not acutely alter quadriceps muscle pain during cycling, and this suggests that prostaglandins do not play a large role in this type of exercise-induced skeletal-muscle pain. Ginger consumption has also been shown to improve VO2 recovery in an equine exercise model, but these results show that this is not the case in humans.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored implications of Big Five traits and proximal factors for the observed leadership potential of personnel in newly formed teams, including individual perception of team cohesion, team-oriented proactivity, and teamwork knowledge.
Abstract: The authors explored implications of Big Five traits and proximal factors for the observed leadership potential of personnel in newly formed teams. Big Five traits were designated as distal factors having indirect links to observed leadership potential via three proximal factors: individual perception of team cohesion, team-oriented proactivity, and teamwork knowledge. Drawing from implicit personality theory, the authors introduced a team-leader personality profile as a higher-order construct for explaining covariation among extraversion, conscientiousness, and emotional stability. A structural analysis of data from 472 personnel supported hypothesized relationships. Specific findings included validation of a team-leader personality profile and preliminary support for the measure of team-oriented proactivity that was developed for this study. Implications of the various findings are discussed.

Abstract: The Icacinaceae occur pantropically today, but are well represented by fossil fruits of the warm Early Middle Eocene, when tropical plants that currently occupy low latitudes were more widely distributed in higher latitudes. Members of this family are fi rst known in the Late Cretaceous; however, fossil fruits of tribe Iodeae are quite rare before the Eocene. In this paper we describe the fi rst formally recognized Late Paleocene icacinaceous taxa from western North America. We name two new species of Icacinicarya based on anatomically preserved fruits and establish a new genus, Icacinicaryites, for impressions with a strong similarity to Icacinicarya that lack anatomical preservation. These new records from the Almont/Beicegel Creek fl ora in North Dakota and several localities in Wyoming, Colorado, and Montana complement records known from the Early Eocene of England and document an increased diversity of Iodeae and related forms in the Paleogene of western North America.

TL;DR: The authors explored Vygotsky's notion of private speech as a cognitive self-regulatory process and how it related to creativity measures among at-risk children and found that both originality and fluency creativity were related to self-direction private speech and grand total private speech.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore Vygotsky's notion of private speech as a cognitive self-regulatory process and how it related to creativity measures among at-risk children. Thirty-two Head Start and state-funded Pre-K children completed the Torrance creativity test Thinking Creatively in Action and Movement (TCAM). The children's private speech was collected in an open play context and while children completed structured logical-mathematical activities. Results revealed that both originality and fluency creativity were related to self-direction private speech and grand total private speech. Findings support that cognitive self-regulating private speech may be related to creative thinking and that private speech may offer a method for assessing early creative thinking in children from various cultural and economic backgrounds.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) integral value for the deuteron and the sum rule integrand for the forward spin polarizability near photodisintegration threshold was shown.
Abstract: It is shown that a measurement of the analyzing power obtained with linearly polarized \ensuremath{\gamma}-rays and an unpolarized target can provide an indirect determination of two physical quantities. These are the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule integrand for the deuteron and the sum rule integrand for the forward spin polarizability (${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{0}$) near photodisintegration threshold. An analysis of data for the $d(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},n)p$ reaction and other experiments is presented. A fit to the world data analyzed in this manner gives a GDH integral value of $\ensuremath{-}603\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}43\ensuremath{\mu}$b between the photodisintegration threshold and 6 MeV. This result is the first confirmation of the large contribution of the ${}^{1}{S}_{0}(M1)$ transition predicted for the deuteron near photodisintegration threshold. In addition, a sum rule value of 3.75\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.18 fm${}^{4}$ for ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{0}$ is obtained between photodisintegration threshold and 6 MeV. This is a first indirect confirmation of the leading-order effective field theory prediction for the forward spin-polarizability of the deuteron.

Abstract: We analyze a discretization method for solving nonlinear integral equations that contain multiple integrals. These equations include integral equations with a Volterra series, instead of a single integral term, on one side of the equation. We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions, and convergence and estimates of the order of convergence for the numerical methods of solution.

TL;DR: In this paper, a statistically significant long-run relationship between the RMB/dollar exchange rate and the US trade deficit with China is detected, which suggests that there is a need for China to adjust its exchange rate policy to help reduce the ever mounting U.S. trade deficit.
Abstract: This paper investigates the claim that China's exchange rate policy causes the US trade deficit with China to grow. Although there is no evidence that changes in the exchange rate cause the trade deficit to rise in the short run, a statistically significant long-run relationship between the RMB/dollar exchange rate and the US trade deficit with China is detected. As the value of the dollar declines (or RMB appreciates), ceteris paribus, so does the trade deficit. Hence, there is a need for China to adjust its exchange rate policy to help reduce the ever mounting US trade deficit.

TL;DR: The Chicago Board Options Exchange's (CBOE) Volatility Index (VIX) is the premier established benchmark of near-term market volatility as discussed by the authors, which is also referred to as the ‘investor fear gauge’ because it provides a consistent measure of market turmoil.
Abstract: The Chicago Board Options Exchange's (CBOE) Volatility Index (VIX) is the premier established benchmark of near-term market volatility. It is also referred to as the ‘investor fear gauge’ because it provides a consistent measure of market turmoil. We examine the VIX as it relates to Presidential popularity as indicated by the Gallup Organization's ongoing poll of US Presidential approval ratings. Our analysis indicates that the expected volatility of the market is highly related to Presidential approval. We then examine the strength and implications of this relationship in order to further establish the link between the economy and Presidential approval. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: One baccalaureate program's journey from low first-time NCLEX-RN pass rates in 2001 to greater student and program success using a data-based, analytical approach is described.
Abstract: Success for first-time takers of the NCLEX-RN has implications for the students, faculty, and nursing programs. As the passing standard for the NCLEX-RN has risen, some programs have experienced a corresponding decrease in their graduates' first-time pass rates. This article describes one baccalaureate program's journey from low first-time NCLEX-RN pass rates in 2001 to greater student and program success using a data-based, analytical approach. Although passing an exit exam was a program requirement for 20 years, the change to computerized testing and more in-depth test preparation has enhanced opportunities for success for students and reduced stress.among faculty. The resulting best practices for preparing students for NCLEX-RN success are described.

TL;DR: Using a combination of chemical and microbiological (culture-dependent and independent) approaches, sources of human faecal contamination were identified in two water reservoirs in Puerto Rico.
Abstract: Using a combination of chemical and microbiological (culture-dependent and -independent) approaches, sources of human faecal contamination were identified in two water reservoirs in Puerto Rico ‐ Guajataca and La Plata. Fluorescence from optical brighteners (OB) ‐ commonly found in laundry detergents ‐ was used as an indicator of contamination from septic systems and other household discharges. Traditional indicators of faecal contamination (e.g. Escherichia coli; faecal enterococci) were enumerated, and human faecal contamination was confirmed through detection of Bifidobacterium adolescentis utilizing polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based analyses. For Guajataca Reservoir, four of 19 sampling sites (21%) were positive for the presence of B. adolescentis under baseflow conditions. The OB fluorescence data suggested that the most likely source for three of these sites was residential, whereas the source of contamination at the remaining site, although of human origin, was probably non-residential. B. adolescentis was present in 83% (19 of 23) of the sampling sites in La Plata. The La Plata sources were more difficult to identify because samples were taken under stormflow conditions, although the presence of OB fluorescence suggested a residential origin in a number of instances. OB fluorescence and traditional bacterial indicators of faecal contamination produced a number of false positive and negative findings for both reservoirs, pointing to the importance of understanding the limitations of these tools for tropical freshwater systems. The results of this study should be useful in developing a weight-of-evidence approach for the identification of potential sources and extent of human faecal contamination in similar tropical reservoirs, a necessary step in the development of management plans to reduce or eliminate these sources.

Abstract: The Kyoto Protocol relies on incentive-based regulations layered underneath a global cap on net emissions of greenhouse gases. Within the Kyoto Protocol are opportunities and constraints for signatory nations. Of concern to developing nations are the constraints the Kyoto Protocol could place on future growth. We examine the constraints and the opportunities offered to developing countries within the Kyoto Protocol. By identifying the potential costs and benefits the Kyoto Protocol has to offer to developing countries and by examining the incentives each create, we hope to spark serious investigations into ways to minimize the potential costs of entering the Kyoto Protocol and take full advantage of the potential benefits.

TL;DR: Data indicate that student-produced podcasts may be the most efficacious academic model for podcasting, but much work remains to be done to assess the educational impact of podcasting.
Abstract: Podcasting is a growing trend in higher education, and this chapter reviews the most common applications for podcasting in higher education and the current literature on its impact on student learning. Although many educators question whether podcasting creates an effective active learning environment, institutional research data from Georgia College & State University indicate that podcasting may have a positive impact grade on distributions and retention, but not on student opinion surveys rating teacher performance. While surveys indicate that students want podcasts of course materials, research suggests that they make limited use of them. Data indicate that student-produced podcasts may be the most efficacious academic model for podcasting, but much work remains to be done to assess the educational impact of podcasting.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that the extreme haecceitism of Trans-World Identification and Stipulation (TWNIS) is fallacious and that the analysis and ultimate rejection of his proof clarifies the fundamental issues that are at stake in the debate between the reductionist and haeccceitist solutions to the problem of trans-world identity.
Abstract: Nathan Salmon, in his paper Trans-World Identification and Stipulation (1996) purports to give a proof for the claim that facts concerning trans-world identity cannot be conceptually reduced to general facts. He calls this claim ‘Extreme Haecceitism.’ I argue that his proof is fallacious. However, I also contend that the analysis and ultimate rejection of his proof clarifies the fundamental issues that are at stake in the debate between the reductionist and haecceitist solutions to the problem of trans-world identity. These issues hinge on the ability of modal logic and possible worlds semantics to draw a hard and fast distinction between the logic and the metaphysics of modal logic. I shall claim that the considerations in this paper call into question the viability of such a distinction.

TL;DR: Comparisons with multi-state samples indicate that the continent-wide population of the Virginia opossum is very similar in terms of osteological dimension, and the combination of low variation index and nonsignificant difference between the sexes in mandibular tooth row length suggests that this measure may be useful for distinguishing fossil opossums species.
Abstract: We analyzed intraspecific and sexually dimorphic osteological varia- tion within the Baldwin County, GA, population of Didelphis virginiana (Virginia opossum). Where possible, 20 measurements (11 cranial/mandibular and 9 post- cranial) were obtained from each of 59 road-killed adult opossums (47 males, 12 females). Although range overlaps exist between the sexes for all measurements, males are significantly larger (P ≤ 0.05) for the following characteristics: greatest length of skull, condylobasal length, basal length, postpalatal length, nasal length, bicanine width, zygomatic breadth, length of mandible, scapula length, humerus length, radius length, femur length, and fibula length. Males exhibit significantly less (P ≤ 0.05) variation in mandibular tooth row length and significantly greater (P ≤ 0.05) variation in scapula length and fibula length. Intraspecific variation ranges from 14-54% for cranial/mandibular and 29-73% for postcranial measure- ments. Sexual dimorphism is most pronounced in cranial/mandibular dimensions. Comparisons with multi-state samples indicate that the continent-wide population of the Virginia opossum is very similar in terms of osteological dimension. The combination of low variation index and nonsignificant difference between the sexes in mandibular tooth row length suggests that this measure may be useful for distinguishing fossil opossum species.
