TL;DR: Aims: To evaluate the role of manure treatment lagoons of swine operations in the fate of faeces‐ and feed‐borne tetracycline‐resistant genes (TRG).
Abstract: Aims: To evaluate the role of manure treatment lagoons of swine operations in the fate of faeces- and feed-borne tetracycline-resistant genes (TRG). Methods and Results: Samples of feed, faeces, lagoon liquid and lagoon sediment in farm’s vicinity were collected at three swine operations varied on their operational practices and analysed on the presence and frequencies of incidence of sixteen TRG in upstream sources (feed, faeces) and downstream receptacles (lagoon liquid and sediments). The highest frequency of TRG incidence was observed in a farm with extensive antibiotic usage and the lowest in the antibiotic-free farm. The study revealed a decrease in TRG richness and diversity in the downstream habitats of each farm. The observed TRG diverged into two groups, the persistent genes that were detected both upstream and downstream, and the transient genes that were detected in the upstream habitats but became nondetectable in the lagoons. Quantitative PCR analysis revealed that upstream concentrations and abundances (determined as TRG/16S rRNA gene ratios) of transient and persistent TRG were similar; however, the former were attenuated in the lagoons to the levels below the detection limit, whereas the latter were ∼ 100-1000 fold amplified in their (mostly) liquid phases and were also detected in farms’ vicinities. Conclusion: Manure lagoons of swine operations imposed both positive and negative selection towards faeces- and feed-borne TRG that, respectively, caused either their proliferation or attenuation in those environments. Significance and Impact of the Study: The study reveals that discharge of antibiotic resistance genes from swine farms to the environment is linked to their positive selection (defined as an impact leading to proliferation of those genes) in manure lagoons.

TL;DR: The classification history of the subfamily Colydiinae is provided, followed by a provisional diagnosis for the group, with a list of all 305 described species currently considered valid.
Abstract: A brief review of the classification history of the subfamily Colydiinae is provided, followed by a provisional diagnosis for the group. The 47 genera of New World Colydiinae (Colydiidae auctorum) are reviewed, with an illustrated key to genera, a representative habitus of each genus, a list of all 305 described species currently considered valid, each placed into the appropriate recognized genus, with full citations for each. Numerous nomenclatural changes are noted. Opostirus Kirsch is transferred to the Tenebrionidae: Eudysantina, new placement. The Adimerini Sharp 1894 are synonymized with Synchitini Erichson, 1845, new synonymy. In the Acropini, Lemmis Pascoe, 1860 = Acropis Burmeister, 1840, new synonymy, with Acropis caelatus (Pascoe, 1860), new combination and Acropis tuberosus (Grouvelle, 1896), new combination. Acropis fryi Pascoe, 1860 = Acropis tuberculifera Burmeister, 1840, new synonymy and Acropis incensa Pascoe, 1860 = Acropis aspera Pascoe, 1860, new synonymy. In the Synchitini, ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function from bmo to bmo in the setting of doubling metric measure spaces and proved its duality and boundedness.
Abstract: We study, in the setting of a doubling metric measure space, the local bmo space and Hardy space h1 defined by Goldberg. We state a John–Nirenberg type inequality for the local bmo space and give two proofs, via a good-lambda inequality and via duality. We also prove the boundedness of the Hardy–Littlewood maximal function from bmo to bmo. Finally, we give characterizations of bmo and h1 using alternative mean-oscillation and moment conditions.

TL;DR: Interpretive phenomenology was used to describe and interpret the experience of 11 medically fragile adolescents who required respiratory assistances of tracheostomies, ventilator support and Bi-level positive airway pressure.
Abstract: Aims. To report a study of the experiences of medically fragile adolescents who require respiratory assistance. Background. The population of medically fragile adolescents has grown in recent decades because of the sequelae of prematurity, injuries and chronic or terminal illnesses. Medically fragile adolescents who require respiratory assistance are part of this unique population, yet as nurses, we know little about their experiences and the best approaches to use in caring for them. Design. A qualitative design, interpretive phenomenology was used in this study. Methods. Interpretive phenomenology was used to describe and interpret the experience of 11 medically fragile adolescents (ages 13–18 years old) who required respiratory assistances of tracheostomies, ventilator support and Bi-level positive airway pressure. Between April 2010–September 2010, audiotaped semi-structured interviews were conducted with the adolescents. Data analysis was completed using a stepped approach to identify themes. Findings. Five themes were identified from the interviews with the adolescents: ‘Get to know me’, ‘Allow me to be myself’, ‘Being there for me’, ‘No matter what, technology helps’ and ‘I am an independent person’. Conclusions. Medically fragile adolescents have a clear view of who they are as a person. They want nurses to view them as a person, not just a patient. The adolescents said that friends were there for them when they needed support. Technology had meanings that enhanced daily living and existed as a part of their day, not their whole day. The adolescents were actively engaging in activities and strategies to achieve their goals of independence.

TL;DR: In this paper, the approach/avoidance of self-awareness was assessed in a naturalistic setting for individuals surreptitiously rated as low, medium, or high in physical attractiveness.
Abstract: The approach/avoidance of self-awareness was assessed in a naturalistic setting for individuals surreptitiously rated as low, medium, or high in physical attractiveness. As hypothesized, selective exposure to self-awareness increased as a linear function of physical attractiveness level Results were interpreted as providing additional evidence for self-awareness exposure effects.
