Abstract: Past research suggests that public support for the use of animal models as means to improve the human condition is present but many individuals have expressed ambivalence. In the present study, various sectors of the academic community (students and faculty) as well as the general population, were surveyed to assess their positions on the need for, and value of animal research, the value of psychological research in which animals are employed, and the respondents' consummatory habits. The results suggested that more information needs to be provided about the role of animal experimentation, including a discussion of the benefits produced by using animals to answer psychological questions.

Abstract: This paper describes the crystal structure of a novel, hypothetical 3-,8-connected cubic structural pattern with the binary stoichiometry A3B8. The novel pattern lies in space group Pm3m, number 221. It possesses the Wells point symbol (4468812)3(43)8 and has the Wellsean Schlafli index (6, 4.3636). It is derived from the Andreini space filling arrangement of octahedra and cuboctahedra by replacing the areas where there are face-sharing of the polyhedra with the inscription of 3-connected, trigonal planar vertices, and retaining the points where the polyhedra share vertices in cube coordination. The structure-type could be representative of a binary metal oxide in which the metal cation attains a relatively high oxidation state of 51/3+. Possible metal oxide models for the structure-type include M3O8 (where M is a Group 6 or 7 elements).

Abstract: Maintenance of long-term synaptic plasticity requires gene expression mediated by cAMP-responsive element binding protein (CREB). Gene expression driven by CREB can commence only if the inhibition by a transcriptional repressor activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4; also known as CREB2) is relieved. Previous research showed that the removal of ATF4 occurs through ubiquitin-proteasome-mediated proteolysis. Using chemically induced hippocampal long-term potentiation (cLTP) as a model system, we investigate the mechanisms that control ATF4 degradation. We observed that ATF4 phosphorylated at serine-219 increases upon induction of cLTP and decreases about 30 min thereafter. Proteasome inhibitor β-lactone prevents the decrease in ATF4. We found that the phosphorylation of ATF4 is mediated by cAMP-dependent protein kinase. Our initial experiments towards the identification of the ligase that mediates ubiquitination of ATF4 revealed a possible role for β-transducin repeat containing protein (β-TrCP). Regulation of ATF4 degradation is likely to be a mechanism for determining the threshold for gene expression underlying maintenance of long-term synaptic plasticity and by extension, long-term memory.
