Abstract: We provide a rationale for window dressing where investors respond to conflicting signals of managerial ability inferred from a fund's performance and disclosed portfolio holdings. We contend that window dressers take a risky bet on their performance during a reporting delay period, which affects investors' interpretation of the conflicting signals and hence their capital allocations. Conditional on good (bad) performance, window dressers benefit from higher (lower) investor flows as compared to non-window dressers. Window dressers also have poor past performance, possess little skill, and incur high portfolio turnover and trade costs, characteristics which in turn result in worse future performance.

Abstract: The adsorption of water molecules (H2O) on sodium chloride cluster cations and anions was studied at 298 K over a mass range of 100–1200 amu using a custom-built laser desorption ionization reactor and mass spectrometer. Under the conditions used, the cations Na3Cl2+ and Na4Cl3+ bind up to three water molecules, whereas the larger cations, Na5Cl4+ to Na19Cl18+, formed hydrates with one or two only. The overall trend is a decrease in hydration with increasing cluster size, with an abrupt drop occurring at the closed-shell Na14Cl13+. As compared to the cluster cations, the cluster anions showed almost no adsorption. Among smaller clusters, a weak adsorption of one water molecule was observed for the cluster anions Na6Cl7– and Na7Cl8–. In the higher mass region, a substantial adsorption of one water molecule was observed for Na14Cl15–. Yet, in the face of the important challenges that will confront them once they leave higher education, it is crucial that they become more active problem-solvers, open their horizons to other parts of the world, and develop a sense for how politics is important to human beings everywhere. We must do a better job of training thinkers and doers, rather than treating our students as merely passive vessels for the receiving of facts.
