Abstract: People have a fundamental need to belong that, when satisfied, is associated with mental and physical well-being. The current investigation examined what happens when the need to belong is thwarted—and how individual differences in self-esteem and emotion differentiation modulate neural responses to social rejection. We hypothesized that low self-esteem would predict heightened activation in distress-related neural responses during a social rejection manipulation, but that this relationship would be moderated by negative emotion differentiation—defined as adeptness at using discrete negative emotion categories to capture one's felt experience. Combining daily diary and neuroimaging methodologies, the current study showed that low self-esteem and low negative emotion differentiation represented a toxic combination that was associated with stronger activation during social rejection (versus social inclusion) in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and anterior insula—two regions previously shown to index social distress. In contrast, individuals with greater negative emotion differentiation did not show stronger activation in these regions, regardless of their level of self-esteem; fitting with prior evidence that negative emotion differentiation confers equanimity in emotionally upsetting situations.

Abstract: The ubiquitin-proteasome pathway (UPP) has multiple roles in the normal nervous system, including the development of synaptic connections and synaptic plasticity. Research over the past several years has indicated a role for the UPP in aging without any overt pathology in the brain. In addition, malfunction of the UPP is implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia associated with it. In this mini review article, we assess the literature on the role of protein degradation by the UPP in aging and in AD with special emphasis on dysregulation of the UPP and its contribution to cognitive decline and impairment.

Abstract: We report the earliest fossil record of a Pigmy Rattlesnake (Sistrurus) on the basis of a trunk vertebra from the Late Miocene (Clarendonian NALMA) Pratt Slide local fauna of Nebraska. Vertebral characteristics of the genus are discussed, and the fossil was diagnosed mainly by the presence of a zygosphenal spine. This record suggests Sistrurus existed as a distinct lineage prior to the Late Miocene and that the genus has been present on the central Great Plains for at least five million years.

Abstract: Instructors who design online courses have an opportunity to develop assessments to monitor students’ progress toward achievement of learning objectives. When combined with well-designed learning objectives, assessment techniques can close the feedback loop and provide excellent artifacts not only for course evaluation but programmatic and campus wide assessment. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the essential elements for the design and use of formative and summative online assessments including discussion postings, assignments, SCORM modules, and proctored and non-proctored tests or quizzes. Issues associated with online test security and “cheating” will also be discussed. The paper is designed to provide an overview about design and use of assessment strategies for instructors who are novices to online learning.
