Abstract: We present an asteroseismic analysis of the helium atmosphere white dwarf (a DBV) recently found in the field of view of the Kepler satellite. We analyze the five-mode pulsation spectrum that was produced based on one month of short-cadence Kepler data. The pulsational characteristics of the star and the asteroseismic analysis strongly suggest that the star is hotter (29,200 K) than the 24,900 K suggested by model fits to the low signal-to-noise survey spectrum of the object. This result has profound and exciting implications for tests of the standard model of particle physics. Hot DBVs are expected to lose over half of their energy through the emission of plasmon neutrinos. Continuous monitoring of the star with the Kepler satellite over the course of 3-5 years is not only very likely to yield more modes to help constrain the asteroseismic fits, but also to allow us to obtain a rate of change of any stable mode and therefore measure the emission of plasmon neutrinos.

Abstract: Education policy analysts and professional educators have called for more and better professional learning opportunities for in‐service teachers, and for at least 30 years economists called for more content training for high school economics teachers. Using new data from all Georgia high school economics students, we assess the impact of in‐service teacher workshops on the performance of students on a high‐stakes end‐of‐course economics exam. Controlling for student characteristics and teacher fixed effects, we find a positive and significant impact of teacher workshop attendance – once teachers have attended three workshops – on student test scores. Furthermore, the results suggest that in‐service workshops for economics teachers offer a cost‐effective way to provide content training.

Abstract: Wildfires have long been an important environmental concern in Florida. Recent wildfires along the urban-rural interface of large cities in Florida have pointed to the need for an increased understanding of the physical and biological mechanisms that govern wildfire occurrence. Increased awareness of the relationships between global climate changes occurring in the tropics and their teleconnections outside the tropics dictate a reevaluation of the role of phenomena such as El Nino-Southern Oscillation on the risk of wildfire. One simple way of illustrating the relationship between ENSO and wildfire occurrence is the use of an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) on wildfire data that has been categorized according to ENSO status (El Nino, La Nina, and neutral years). Abstract: An extinct colubrid snake of the genus Nebraskophis is reported on the basis of a trunk vertebra from the Late Eocene (36.0-34.2 Ma) of central Georgia, USA. The fossil represents the oldest record of the family Colubridae in North America, and is equivalent to, or slightly older in age than the previously oldest known colubrid remains from the Late Eocene of Thailand. The age and remarkable similarity of the fossil to living colu- brid vertebrae suggest that the origin of colubrid snakes considerably predates the Late Eocene. The presence of Nebraskophis in Georgia supports the hypothesis of an early Ce- nozoic biogeographic connection between the Great Plains and southeastern region of the United States for at least some early colubrids. The genus probably evolved auto- chthonously on the continent rather than arriving as a Eurasian immigrant.
