MPOWER: An Observation System for Assessing Coach Autonomy Support in High School Varsity Boys' Soccer Practices

Abstract: Substantial focus in coaching science has turned to the construct of autonomy support, given mounting evidence of its positive role in athlete motivation and performance. However, existing research is mostly limited to perceptions data, which problematizes its translation to coach education, training, and development. This paper describes the development of an observation system (MPOWER) for coding coach autonomy support. MPOWER was designed for use within high school varsity boys' soccer practices as part of a larger study. Grounded in self-determination theory literature and guided by recommendations for developing contextually valid observation systems, the instrument includes six behavior concepts: moves decision-making (M), prompts for questions and feelings (P), opts to use player idea (O), withholds information to guide response (W), empathizes with negative affect (E), and rationalizes (R). The Role Of End-User Training In Technology Acceptance

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine the role end-user training has on performance expectancy and effort expectancy, two variables associated with technology acceptance. The technology-based elements of the HIPAA security rules among oral surgeons were used for the study. The method of the investigation was a cross-sectional correlational study using a self-reported mailed questionnaire. The survey was created using preexisting scales from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. Results suggest end-user training is positively correlated with both performance expectancy and effort expectancy.

Perceptions, knowledge, and commitment of clinical staff to shared governance.

Abstract: The perceptions, knowledge, and commitment of clinical staff to shared governance were explored in a nonexperimental, survey research design, wherein preimplementation responses were compared to postimplementation responses. Using a nonprobability sampling method, all clinical staff members had the opportunity to respond to the Shared Governance Survey at the preimplementation and the 1-year postimplementation period. Thirty-eight clinical areas, including inpatient and outpatient areas, were included in the study. Both surveys contained a short demographic section and the Shared Governance Survey adapted from Minors et al. Results showed a decrease in perception and knowledge of shared governance between the 2 survey periods. This pattern was attributed to the idealism of shared governance in the preimplementation period compared to the reality of implementing shared governance. Interestingly, commitment to shared governance increased during this same time. When the sample was divided into groups, participants in shared governance had significantly higher scores on perception and knowledge of shared governance than did nonparticipants. Overall, participants and nonparticipants were committed to shared governance. The results of the survey indicated that clinical staff members recognized shared governance as a process, not a project, and that it takes time to share responsibility, accountability, and authority for nursing practice.

Demographic response of cutlassfish (Trichiurus japonicus and T. nanhaiensis) to fluctuating palaeo-climate and regional oceanographic conditions in the China seas

Abstract: Glacial cycles of the Quaternary have heavily influenced the demographic history of various species. To test the evolutionary impact of palaeo-geologic and climatic events on the demographic history of marine taxa from the coastal Western Pacific, we investigated the population structure and demographic history of two economically important fish (Trichiurus japonicus and T. nanhaiensis) that inhabit the continental shelves of the East China and northern South China Seas using the mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences and Bayesian Skyline Plot analyses. A molecular rate of 2.03% per million years, calibrated to the earliest flooding of the East China Sea shelf (70–140 kya), revealed a strong correlation between population sizes and primary production. Furthermore, comparison of the demographic history of T. japonicus populations from the East China and South China Seas provided evidence of the postglacial development of the Changjiang (Yangtze River) Delta. In the South China Sea, interspecific comparisons between T. japonicus and T. nanhaiensis indicated possible evolutionary responses to changes in palaeo-productivity that were influenced by East Asian winter monsoons. This study not only provides insight into the demographic history of cutlassfish but also reveals potential clues regarding the historic productivity and regional oceanographic conditions of the Western Pacific marginal seas.
