TL;DR: The distribution of Ca and Sr ions over the fourfold and sixfold positions in the apatite structure was determined by comparing experimental and calculated values for the intensity ratios of suitable reflections.
Abstract: Solid solutions of strontium and calcium hydroxyapatite were synthesized by solid-state reaction. Lattice parameters of these compounds were determined using two types of Guinier cameras. They vary linearly with the molar percentage of strontium hydroxyapatite. The distribution of Ca and Sr ions over the fourfold and sixfold positions in the apatite structure was determined by comparing experimental and calculated values for the intensity ratios of suitable reflections. A slight, although significant, preference of Sr for the sixfold position was found. An ideal behavior is predicted for these solid solutions.

Abstract: A slowly cooled sample of the ferrimagnetic spinel MgFe2O4 has been studied with 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy over a wide temperature range both with and without high magnetic fields. The observed temperature dependence of the A and B site hyperfine parameters is discussed. Conclusions about the spin structure, the magnetic exchange interactions and the supertransferred hyperfine fields are presented.

TL;DR: Arterio-venous differences across the udder demonstrated that essential amino acids (EAA) were taken up by the mammary gland in sufficient amounts to account for the EAA secreted as milk protein.
Abstract: An electromagnetic method was adapted to quantitatively measure blood flow through an external pudic artery of the udder in lactating cows during several months. Blood flow through the ipsilateral external pudic vein was blocked while blood was taken from a subcutaneous abdominal vein. Blood flow to milk yield ratio amounted to a mean value of 507:1 in three cows. Peak milk yield occurred before the time of our experiments. There was a high correlation (r = .73) between mammary arterial blood flow and milk yield. Arterio-venous differences (AV) across the udder demonstrated that essential amino acids (EAA) were taken up by the mammary gland in sufficient amounts to account for the EAA secreted as milk protein. Uptake of valine, isoleucine, lysine and particularly that of arginine was in excess of that for milk protein synthesis. There was a highly significant correlation (P<.01) between AV differences of several amino acids and their corresponding arterial concentrations. Uptake of glucose was

TL;DR: In this paper, the lowest magnetic-dipole mode with symmetry of revolution was investigated in a coaxial ring resonator of height L, inner radius b, and outer radius a. Theoretical data were given about the Q of the mode, the eigen magnetic dipole at resonance, and the structure of the fields inside and outside the resonator.
Abstract: The lowest magnetic-dipole mode with symmetry of revolution is investigated in a coaxial ring resonator of height L, inner radius b, and outer radius a. Theoretical data are given about the Q of the mode, the eigen magnetic dipole at resonance, and the structure of the fields (electric and magnetic) inside and outside the resonator. The variables are the dielectric constant epsilon/sub r/ = N/sup 2/ and the dimensionless ratios b/a and L/2a. The data are valid in the limit of very high epsilon/sub r/. Experiments show them to be already useful at epsilon/sub r/ = 35.

TL;DR: In this article, the presence of trace elements in different silica gels was determined by neutron activation analysis and removal of these elements by acid treatment before and after derivatization to a reversed phase was studied.
Abstract: Trace elements in different silica gels are determined by neutron activation analysis. The presence of 20 elements in the ppm range and of 15 elements in the ppb range is established in all silica gels; even in spherical material probably obtained via an organosilicium starting material. Removal of these elements by acid treatment before and after derivatization to a reversed-phase is studied. This is only partially effective. The resulting HPLC phases are, however, much better in cases where trace elements are detrimental. Even octadecyl derivatized silicagel can withstand boiling in 12 N hydrochloric acid without loosing significant amounts of bonded organic material.

TL;DR: An on-line spike recognition system allows separation of multiple spikes present on a single channel, in up to six different classes, using the well known nearest neighbor technique to determine all possible cluster configurations.
Abstract: An on-line spike recognition system allows separation of multiple spikes present on a single channel, in up to six different classes. The learning phase is unsupervised, and uses the data samples of the waveform as coordinates in a multidimensional feature space. Additional signal characteristics may improve the system performance in special cases. Using the well known nearest neighbor technique, all possible cluster configurations are determined. From this analysis, the investigator selects the physiologically best suited duster layout, primary based on a curve showing the number of clusters versus the maximum distance of two neighboring spikes in the same cluster. This procedure is supported by visual examination of the spikes of each cluster. Statistics are calculated for inter-and intracluster distances, yielding confidence limits for the cluster bounds, and estimates for the quality of separation. During the classification phase, a separate graphic display processor permits continuous control without delay. Each classified spike is projected over its cluster, identifying mean waveform.

TL;DR: In this paper, a two-stage pilot reactor has been tested for the anaerobic digestion of distillery wastewater with a COD of-10,000 mg/1. The results indicate that an-aerobic treatment in the upflow reactor qualifies as an efficient and low cost method for distillation wastewater treatment.
Abstract: A two-stage pilot reactor has been tested for the anaerobic digestion of distillery wastewater with a COD of-10,000 mg/1. In the first stage (residence time 16–72 hours), carbohydrates are fermented to low molecular weight metabolites. The second stage is an upflow reactor (residence time 14 hours) in which these metabolites are converted to biogas. Overall COD elimination is 84% (BOD, 92%) with biogas production 5–7 times the active volume of the upflow reactor per day. The process withstands temporary stress conditions fairly well. The results indicate that anaerobic treatment in the upflow reactor qualifies as an efficient and low cost method for distillery wastewater treatment.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the Rayleigh equation to model the behavior of trace elements in the Farsund charnockite and the Lyngdal hornblende granodiorite.
Abstract: Charnockitic acidic rocks related to anorthosites are well represented in the Rogaland anorthositic province. Quartz mangerites constitute the upper level of the Bjerkrem-Sogndal layered lopolith and are related to anorthosites through a complete sequence of differentiated products which includes leuconorites, norites and mangerites. In the Hidra body, charnockitic rocks occur as a stockwork of dykes cutting across anorthosite and leuconorite. The southwest end of the magmatic province consists of two distinct bodies of acidic rocks: the Farsund charnockite and the Lyngdal hornblende granodiorite. They are considered to be related to the neighboring anorthosite massifs. Some trace and major elements (REE, Rb, Sr, U, Th, Hf, Zr, K 2 O, SiO 2 ) of these rocks as well as the strontium and oxygen isotopic ratios are investigated. Quantitative modeling of the behavior of trace elements using the Rayleigh equation indicates in agreement with the isotopic data that direct derivation of the acidic rocks by fractional crystallization of a parental magma is a possible mechanism in Hidra and in the Lyngdal granodiorite. In Bjerkrem-Sogndal, however, the REE evolution in the acidic rocks and the high value of the 87 Sr 86 Sr initial ratio (0.7105) compared to that of the anorthosites (0.705–0.706) cannot be explained by a simple fractional crystallization process. Contamination by supracrustal material relatively poor in REE and with a high Sr isotopic ratio must also be invoked. In the Farsund charnockite REE distribution and Sr and O isotopic ratios suggest an origin by anatexis of gneisses of sedimentary origin.

TL;DR: Valine was extensively catabolized by mammary tissue, resulting in a considerable 14CO2 production and in the incorporation of 14C into milk citric acid and to a lesser extent into casein aspartic acid and glutamic acid.
Abstract: Two lactating mammary glands excised from 2 goats were perfused for several hours in the presence of [U-14C; 2,3-3H]-L-valine and received adequate quantities of glucose, acetate and amino acids. In the synthesized milk 96 and 89% respectively of the casein valine was derived from free plasma valine. Valine was extensively catabolized by mammary tissue, resulting in a considerable 14CO2 production and in the incorporation of 14C into milk citric acid and to a lesser extent into casein aspartic acid and glutamic acid. About 30% of the valine molecules which were taken up by the mammary gland were oxidized to CO2 and 70% were incorporated in casein as valine residues. About 10% of the plasma valine molecules were reversibly transaminated during one passage through the udder. An important amount of radioactivity of plasma was present in unknown metabolites. Only 7% of this activity was localized in isobutyrate. The radioactivity of total milk fat was very low. Mainly iso-14:0, iso-16:0 and 15:0 were labelled.
