Abstract: In this contribution the transmission of M-PSK and M-QAM modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signals over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered. The degradation of the bit error rate (BER), caused by the presence of carrier frequency offset and carrier phase noise is analytically evaluated. It is shown that for a given BER degradation, the values of the frequency offset and the linewidth of the carrier generator that are allowed for OFDM are orders of magnitude smaller than for single carrier systems carrying the same bit rate. >

Abstract: We have isolated seven allelic recessive Arabidopsis mutants, designated superroot (sur1-1 to sur1-7), displaying several abnormalities reminiscent of auxin effects. These characteristics include small and epinastic cotyledons, an elongated hypocotyl in which the connection between the stele and cortical and epidermal cells disintegrates, the development of excess adventitious and lateral roots, a reduced number of leaves, and the absence of an inflorescence. When germinated in the dark, sur1 mutants did not develop the apical hook characteristic of etiolated seedlings. We were able to phenocopy the Sur1- phenotype by supplying auxin to wild-type seedlings, to propagate sur1 explants on phytohormone-deficient medium, and to regenerate shoots from these explants by the addition of cytokinins alone to the culture medium. Analysis by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry indicated increased levels of both free and conjugated indole-3-acetic acid. sur1 was crossed to the mutant axr2 and the altered-auxin response mutant ctr1. The phenotype of both double mutants was additive. The sur1 gene was mapped on chromosome 2 at 0.5 centimorgans from the gene encoding phytochrome B.

Abstract: To study the perceptual structure of musical timbre and the effects of musical training, timbral dissimilarities of synthesized instrument sounds were rated by professional musicians, amateur musicians, and nonmusicians The data were analyzed with an extended version of the multidimensional scaling algorithm CLASCAL (Winsberg & De Soete, 1993), which estimates the number of latent classes of subjects, the coordinates of each timbre on common Euclidean dimensions, a specificity value of unique attributes for each timbre, and a separate weight for each latent class on each of the common dimensions and the set of specificities Five latent classes were found for a three-dimensional spatial model with specificities Common dimensions were quantified psychophysically in terms of log-rise time, spectral centroid, and degree of spectral variation The results further suggest that musical timbres possess specific attributes not accounted for by these shared perceptual dimensions Weight patterns indicate that perceptual salience of dimensions and specificities varied across classes A comparison of class structure with biographical factors associated with degree of musical training and activity was not clearly related to the class structure, though musicians gave more precise and coherent judgments than did nonmusicians or amateurs The model with latent classes and specificities gave a better fit to the data and made the acoustic correlates of the common dimensions more interpretable

Abstract: Today it is generally recognized that the particular behaviour of trace metals in the environment is determined by their specific physicochemical forms rather than by their total concentration. Several chemical speciation and fractionation methods for heavy metal analysis in soils and sediments have been and are still being developed and applied. They primarily are intended to understand the particular environmental behaviour of metals, present in a variety of forms and in a variety of matrices. Analytical developments, modifications of existing methods, and recent new approaches are reviewed and discussed. Techniques used include chemical extractions, ion-exchange/gel chromatography, filtration, centrifugation and sieving, selective solvent extraction. Moreover, the application of these various techniques in different research fields over the last years is explored. Abstract: Because plant cells do not move and are surrounded by a rigid cell wall, cell division rates and patterns are believed to be directly responsible for generating new structures throughout development. To study the relationship between cell division and morphogenesis, transgenic tobacco and Arabidopsis plants were constructed expressing dominant mutations in a key regulator of the Arabidopsis cell cycle, the Cdc2a kinase. Plants constitutively overproducing the wild-type Cdc2a or the mutant form predicted to accelerate the cell cycle did not exhibit a significantly altered development. In contrast, a mutation expected to arrest the cell cycle abolished cell division when expressed in Arabidopsis, whereas some tobacco plants constitutively producing this mutant protein were recovered. These plants had a reduced histone H1 kinase activity and contained considerably fewer cells. These cells were, however, much larger and underwent normal differentiation. Morphogenesis, histogenesis and developmental timing were unaffected. The results indicate that, in plants, the developmental controls defining shape can act independently from cell division rates.

Abstract: A linkage map of the porcine genome has been developed by segregation analysis of 239 genetic markers. Eighty-one of these markers correspond to known genes. Linkage groups have been assigned to all 18 autosomes plus the X Chromosome (Chr). As 69 of the markers on the linkage map have also been mapped physically (by others), there is significant integration of linkage and physical map data. Six informative markers failed to show linkage to these maps. As in other species, the genetic map of the heterogametic sex (male) was significantly shorter (∼16.5 Morgans) than the genetic map of the homogametic sex (female) (∼21.5 Morgans). The sex-averaged genetic map of the pig was estimated to be ∼18 Morgans in length. Mapping information for 61 Type I loci (genes) enhances the contribution of the pig gene map to comparative gene mapping. Because the linkage map incorporates both highly polymorphic Type II loci, predominantly microsatellites, and Type I loci, it will be useful both for large experiments to map quantitative trait loci and for the subsequent isolation of trait genes following a comparative and candidate gene approach.

Abstract: Objective. To assess the efficacy and tolerability of sulfasalazine (SSZ) in the treatment of spondyl-arthropathy. Methods. We conducted a 6-month randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, multicenter study of patients with spondylarthropathy whose disease had remained active despite treatment with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. Patients were treated with SSZ (3 gm/day) or placebo. The primary efficacy variables were the physician's and patient's overall assessments, pain, and morning stiffness. End points were analyzed in the intent-to-treat and completer patient populations; the time course of effect was analyzed in the completer patient population. Results. Of the 351 patients enrolled, 263 (75%) completed the 6-month treatment period. The withdrawal rates were 35 (20%) and 53 (30%) in the placebo and SSZ groups, respectively. In the intent-to-treat analysis of end point efficacy, the between-treatment difference reached statistical significance only for 1 of the 4 primary outcome variables, the patient's overall assessment of disease activity, for which 60% of the patients taking SSZ improved by at least 1 point on a 5-point scale, in contrast to 44% of the patients taking placebo. Laboratory markers of inflammation also showed statistically significant change in favor of SSZ. In subgroup analysis, the most impressive effects were seen in patients with psoriatic arthritis, both for the 4 primary efficacy variables and for secondary efficacy variables such as the number of inflamed joints. Adverse events were more frequent in the SSZ group than the placebo group, but all were transient or reversible after cessation of treatment. Conclusion. The results of this study show that SSZ had greater efficacy than placebo in the treatment of active spondylarthropathy, notably in patients with psoriatic arthritis.

Abstract: Bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity was shown to be constitutive and substrate-specific : the BSH isogenic Lactobacillus plantarum wild type (LP80 WT) and BSH overproducing LP80 (pCBH1) strains preferentially hydrolysed glycodeoxycholic acid (GDCA), whereas the hamster Lact. animalis isolates H362 and H364 showed a higher affinity for taurodeoxycholic acid (TDCA). In viability studies in the presence of nutrients, it was demonstrated that GDCA exerted a higher toxicity than TDCA in a pH-dependent manner. This toxicity was inversely proportionate to the BSH activity level of the strains tested, indicating that BSH activity contributed towards bile salt resistance when appropriate nutrients were available. The high toxicity of GDCA relative to TDCA was suggested to be caused by their weak and strong acid properties respectively. It was therefore hypothesized that the protonated form of bile salts exhibited toxicity as it imported protons in the cell. This puts an energy-burden on BSH lactobacilli which undergo intracellular acidification. BSH + cells primarily protect themselves through the formation of the weaker DCA compound, which can help negate the pH-drop by recapturing and exporting the co-transported proton. However, since DCA is more toxic than its conjugated counterparts, an additional energy-dependent detoxification of DCA is suggested.

Abstract: The Indica rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties Pokkali and Nona Bokra are well-known salt tolerance donors in classical breeding. In an attempt to understand the molecular basis of their tolerance, physiological and gene expression studies were initiated. The effect of abscisic acid (ABA) on total proteins in roots from 12-d-old seedlings of Pokkali, Nona Bokra, and the salt-sensitive cultivar Taichung N1 were analyzed on two-dimensional gels. The abundance of ABA-induced proteins was highest in the most tolerant variety, Pokkali. Three ABA-responsive proteins, present at different levels in roots from tolerant and sensitive varieties, were further characterized by partial amino acid analysis. A novel histidine-rich protein and two types of late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins were identified. Protein immunoblotting revealed that the levels of dehydrins and group 3 LEA proteins were significantly higher in roots from tolerant compared with sensitive varieties. Endogenous ABA levels showed a transient increase in roots exposed to osmotic shock (150 mM NaCl). Peak ABA concentrations were 30-fold higher for Nona Bokra and 6-fold higher for Pokkali compared with Taichung N1. Both the salt-induced endogenous ABA levels and a greater molecular response of root tissue to ABA were associated with the varietal differences in tolerance.

Abstract: Summary Lignin is a polymeric constituent of the cell wall that needs to be removed during the paper making process. Bi-specific caffeic acid/5-hydroxyferulic acid O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyses the O-methylation of caffeic acid and 5-hydroxyferulic acid to ferulic acid and sinapic acid, respectively. These compounds are intermediates in the biosynthesis of the lignin precursors. Therefore, COMTs are potential target enzymes for reducing the amount, or modifying the composition, of lignin in plants. Different antisense and sense constructs have been expressed of a gene encoding a COMT from poplar (Populus trichocarpa x P. deltoides) in a P. tremula x P. alba clone under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter. From all analysed transformants, four lines transformed with an antisense construct had a reduced COMT activity. Two showed a 50% reduction of COMT activity, which altered only slightly the monomeric composition. In the two other transformants, the COMT activity was reduced by 95%. In the latter case, the syringyl/ guaiacyl ratio (S/G) was reduced by sixfold (due to a decrease of S and an increase of G), as analysed by thioacidolysis. A new component of lignin, the 5-hydroxyguaiacyl residue, was detected among the thioacidolysis products. Moreover, in contrast to the white/yellow colour of wild-type wood, the xylem of the transgenic lines with a 95% reduction of COMT activity was pale rose. A similar phenotype was observed in brown-midrib mutants of maize and sorghum, known for their altered lignification. Although the lignin composition was consistently modified, the lignin content of the transgenic poplars was similar to that of the controls.

Abstract: In the past five years the use of rotifers in ecotoxicologial studies has substantially increased. This greater interest has been due to the central role of rotifers in freshwater planktonic communities, the ease and speed of making quantitative measurements of mortality and reproduction, their sensitivity to common pollutants, the commercial availability of cysts, and the existence of reliable, standardized protocols. The main endpoints used in ecotoxicology studies are reviewed, including mortality, reproduction, behavior, cellular biomarkers, mesocosms, and species diversity in natural populations. For each endpoint, published studies are cited, along with the compounds investigated, duration of exposure, and the LC50s, EC50s or NOECs reported. Rotifers have been included as part of a standardized mesocosm and in several large-scale, outdoor mesocosm studies. A critique of rotifer use in ecotoxicology is offered and it is concluded that the scientific basis for including rotifers as part of a battery of ecotoxicological tests is well established.

Abstract: Nitrite is an intermediary compound formed during nitrification as well as denitrifiication. It occasionally accumulates in soils and drainage water. The nitrite can then undergo transformations to gaseous nitrogen compounds such as NO and NO2. Soil pH controls the abiotic nitrite decomposition to a large extent. Under acidic conditions(pH <5.5), nitrous acid spontaneously decomposes preferentially to NO and NO2. Nitrite also undergoes reactions with metallic cations (especially ferrous iron) and with organic matter. As a result of these reactions gaseous compounds such as NO, NO2, N2O and CH3ONO can be formed. Through reaction of nitrite with phenolic compounds nitroand nitrosocompounds can be formed, building up organic N. With normal agricultural practices on slightly acidic soils, the nitrite instability usually does not lead to economically important N losses from soils. However, the compounds formed through its degradation or interaction with other soil constituents are linked to environmental problems such as tropospheric ozone formation, acid rain, the greenhouse effect and the destruction of the stratospheric ozone.

Abstract: In this work the electron tunnelling in device grade ultra-thin 3–6 nm n + poly-Si/SiO 2 /n-Si structures has been analysed. The well known analytic expression for the Fowler-Nordheim tunnelling current was adapted to include the case of direct tunnelling of electrons, which becomes important for oxide layers thinner than 4.5 nm. For these ultra-thin oxide MOS structures it is necessary to take the band bending in the Si substrate and in the poly-Si layer into account to determine the oxide electrical field strength and to derive the tunnelling parameters of the measured current-voltage characteristic. A method is explained to derive the tunnel barrier height φ s and the effective mass of the tunnelling electron m ox from the experimental tunnel current characteristics. It is shown that both the direct tunnelling and the Fowler-Nordheim tunnelling current can be quantitatively explained by a WKB approximation using m ox as the single fitting parameter.

Abstract: Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML), or Rosai-Dorfman disease, is rare histiocytic disorder of known origin which shares several cell markers with Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (LCH). Although Rosai-Dorfman cells exhibit an aberrant immunophenotype, the indolent clinical course of SHML suggests a reactive disorder rather than a neoplastic process. Until recently this was prevailing opinion concerning LCH also, but recent studies have detected clonal histiocytes in all forms of this latter condition, which is therefore considered a clonal neoplastic disorder with highly variable biological behaviour. To determine whether the histiocytic proliferation in SHML is polyclonal or clonal we used X-linked polymorphic loci to assess clonality in lesional tissues in two women. Polymorphic regions of the human androgen receptor (HUMARA) locus were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. The HUMARA locus was informative in both cases and, following digestion with methylation-sensitive enzymes, typical polyclonal X-inactivation patterns were observed. Since abnormal cells accounted for > 90% lesional tissue cells, we conclude that Rosai-Dorfman histiocytic proliferation was polyclonal in the women studied.
