Abstract: X-ray beams irradiated from an x-ray tube with a point source or a sufficiently small focal spot produce edge-enhanced images in the boundary of an object due to the effect of phase shift of x-rays. This technique is called phase contrast imaging. A digital phase contrast imaging system based on a photostimulable phosphor plate (imaging plate) designed for mammography has been developed for clinical use recently and now commercially available. In this study, the digital phase contrast images of an acrylic plate and plant seeds were acquired without any increase of incident dose to detector when compared to conventional contact digital imaging. Improvement of image edge sharpness was evaluated in terms of spatial edge response and spectral analysis of the images. In addition, the improvement of the sharpness of the image was also evaluated in clinical mammograms. Our results indicated that higher image sharpness in the boundary of the object was observed. The power spectrum of the digital phase contrast image was found to be higher than that of the digital contact image at wide spatial frequency region. In conclusion, the commercially available phase contrast imaging system can provide breast images with details that are not available in conventional mammograms. The digital phase contrast imaging would be useful to detect diseases, especially microcalcifications, in mammograms without any increase of exposure dose.

Abstract: A temperature-sensitive mutant virus unable to replicate at 38°C was recovered from passage 189 (IVpi-189) of Madin-Darby canine kidney cells infected persistently with influenza A. Immunofluorescent staining of the IVpi-189 virus-infected cells revealed disrupted transport of the matrix (M) 1 protein into the nucleus at non-permissive temperatures, resulting in retention of the nucleoprotein (NP) in the nucleus. Upon comparison with the parental influenza A E61-24-P15 strain used to establish persistent infection, amino acid exchanges were found in the M1 protein of IVpi-189 virus; arginine to glutamine at position 72 and threonine to alanine at position 139. When mice were inoculated intranasally with IVpi-189 virus, virus growth in the lungs was restrained and terminated rapidly. Prior intranasal inoculation with only a small dose of IVpi-189 virus induced humoral and cellular immune responses and protected mice against subsequent virulent virus challenge. These results indicate that IVpi-189 virus, an avirulent temperature-sensitive mutant, is a promising candidate for use as a live-attenuated vaccine. J. Med. Abstract: In order to evaluate display devices, a geostationary image and the character were generally used in previous studies. We have proposed a new method for comparing the standing posture when a subject views a liquid crystal display (LCD) displaying a movie scrolling from the left to the right. In this study, we mathematically measured the degree of determinism in the dynamics of the sway of center-of-gravity. The Double-Wayland algorithm was used as a novel method. As a result, the dynamics of the sway when subjects viewed the movie as well that of the sway in the resting state was considered to be stochastic. The moving map task would not change it into a deterministic one.

Abstract: Polythioethers consisting of 1,4‐bis(mercaptomethyl)benzene (MB) with α,ω‐dibromo‐n‐alkanes (An, the number of methylene groups, n = 5–8) (MB‐An) and 4,4′‐bis(mercaptomethyl)biphenyl (MBP) with An (MBP‐An), and polythioesters containing MB and MBP with n‐alkanedioyl dichlorides (AMmC, the number of methylene groups, m = 5–8) (MB‐AMmC and MBP‐AMmC) were synthesised and their phase transition behaviour investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and X‐ray diffraction. The MPB‐An thioether polymers exhibited a nematic phase with good thermal stability but the MB‐An thioether and MB‐AMmC and MBP‐AMmC thioester polymers exhibited no mesophase. The dependence of liquid crystalline behaviour on the chemical structure of the polymers is discussed.

Abstract: 液晶ディスプレイによる動画表示は特有の「ぼやけ」や「にじみ」を伴うという欠点があったが, OCB液晶技術によって開発されたディスプレイはこの問題を解消した. そこで, OCB液晶ディスプレイと従来からの液晶ディスプレイについて, 高齢者から若年者までの幅広い年齢層を対象として, 動画を注視している際の重心動揺の測定を行った. 被験者は, 20歳から73歳の正常裸眼視力または正常な矯正視力を有するとともに, 平衡機能に既往症のない55名を対象とした. OCB液晶ディスプレイと従来からの液晶ディスプレイには, 横方向にスクロールする地図を表示した. 重心動揺の測定結果は, 定量化指標を用いて比較検討を行った. その結果, OCBディスプレイと従来型ディスプレイの間に差が認められ, OCBディスプレイ注視時は重心の不安定さが改善されたことが示された. この傾向は, 若年層で著しく, 中年層と高齢者では従来型ディスプレイ注視時とOCBディスプレイ注視時との差異は有意ではなかった.
