Abstract: Understanding of standardized uptake value (SUV) of 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-d-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) depends on the background accumulations of glucose because the SUV often varies the status of patients. The purpose of this study was to develop a new method for quantitative analysis of SUV of FDG-PET scan images. The method included an anatomical standardization and a statistical comparison with normal cases by using Z-score that are often used in SPM or 3D-SSP approach for brain function analysis. Our scheme consisted of two approaches, which included the construction of a normal model and the determination of the SUV scores as Z-score index for measuring the abnormality of an FDG-PET scan image. To construct the normal torso model, all of the normal images were registered into one shape, which indicated the normal range of SUV at all voxels. The image deformation process consisted of a whole body rigid registration of shoulder to bladder region and liver registration and a non-linear registration of body surface by using the thin-plate spline technique. In order to validate usefulness of our method, we segment suspicious regions on FDG-PET images manually, and obtained the Z-scores of the regions based on the corresponding voxels that stores the mean and the standard deviations from the normal model. We collected 243 (143 males and 100 females) normal cases to construct the normal model. We also extracted 432 abnormal spots from 63 abnormal cases (73 cancer lesions) to validate the Z-scores. The Z-scores of 417 out of 432 abnormal spots were higher than 2.0, which statistically indicated the severity of the spots. In conclusions, the Z-scores obtained by our computerized scheme with anatomical standardization of torso region would be useful for visualization and detection of subtle lesions on FDG-PET scan images even when the SUV may not clearly show an abnormality.

Abstract: The viewers of three-dimensional (3D) movies often complain of blurring and bleeding. They sometimes experience visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). In this study, the effect of VIMS on body sway was examined using stabilograms. We measured the sway in the center of gravity before and during the exposure to images projected on a head-mounted display (HMD). While viewing, the subjects were instructed to remain in the Romberg posture for the first 60 seconds and maintain a wide stance (midline of the heels, 20 cm apart) for the next 60 seconds. Employing Double-Wayland algorithm, we measured the degree of determinism in the dynamics of the sway in the center of gravity with respect to viewing 3D movies on HMD. As a result, the dynamics of the sway during and before the exposure was considered to be stochastic. Thus, exposure to 3D movies would not change the dynamics to a deterministic one.

Abstract: Optically compensated bend (OCB) mode liquid crystal display (LCD) panels are newly developed displays that have excellent moving picture quality, which is almost equivalent to that of a cathode ray tube (CRT). A high performance, with a brightness of 600 cd/m 2 and a contrast ratio of 600:1, was obtained by using the pseudo-impulse driving method to insert a black period between two continuous frames; further, the blinking backlight method was used. By measuring the centre of gravity of the human body, we compared statokinesigrams obtained from subjects viewing moving maps on OCBs and on conventional model displays. The results suggest that OCBs are better than conventional displays for scrolling map images such as those in car-navigation systems.

Abstract: Often, people travelling in ships, trains, aircraft, and cars tend to experience motion sickness. It has been reported that even users of virtual environments and entertainment systems experience motion sickness. This visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is known to be caused by sensory conflict, which is the disagreement between vergence and visual accommodation while observing stereoscopic images. VIMS can be measured by psychological and physiological methods. The simulator sickness questionnaire (SSQ) is a well-known method that is used herein for verifying the occurrence of VIMS. We also quantitatively measure the sway of the centre of gravity of the human body before and during exposure to several types of movies. During the measurement, subjects are instructed to maintain the Romberg posture for the first 60 s and a wide stance (with midlines of the heels 20 cm apart) for the next 60 s. The centre of gravity is projected on a plane that is parallel to the ground. The body sway is recorded as a stabilogram on the plane. According to previous research, a stochastic process is regarded as a mathematical model that generates stabilograms. We propose a method to obtain stochastic differential equations (SDEs) as a mathematical model of the body sway on the basis of the stabilogram. While there are several minimal points of the temporally averaged potential function involved in the SDEs, the stereoscopic images decrease the gradient of the potential function. We have succeeded in estimating the decrease in the gradient of the potential function by using an index called sparse density.

Abstract: Oligostilbenoids are a group of natural products derived from the oxidative coupling of C6–C2–C6 units found in some plant families. A structurally diverse chemical pool is produced after the successive regioselective and stereoselective oligomerization of resveratrol. This review describes the current status and knowledge of the structure of resveratrol oligomers (ROs) in Dipterocarpaceaeous plants (DPs). Beginning with the recently validated formation of ROs in DPs, each downstream conversion is described from the perspective of the resveratrol coupling mode. Particular emphasis is placed upon the regioselectivity of monomer- and dimer-derived radical–radical coupling processes, which are responsible for producing dimers, trimers, and tetramers with various cyclic frame skeletons, as well as related processes that result in highly condensed scaffolds, such as hexamers and octamers. Trimers in oxidized, dearomatized, and rearranged forms are also summarized, as well as the biogenic relationship between the compounds. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on the O- and C-glucosides of ROs, as well as on the hetero-coupled ROs. In addition, several stereoisomers that originate from asymmetric carbons and the stereochemistry with respect to the conformation due to the chiral axis are described. Besides, NMR spectroscopic properties such as coalescence and anisotropy are briefly described. Approaches to determine absolute configuration are also summarized.
