Abstract: Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is caused by sensory conflict, the disagreement between vergence and visual accommodation while observing stereoscopic images. VIMS can be measured by psychological and physiological methods. We quantitatively measured the head acceleration and body sway before and during exposure to a conventional 3D movie. The subjects wore a head mount display and maintained the Romberg posture for the first 60 s and a wide stance (midlines of the heels 20 cm apart) for the next 60 s. Head acceleration was measured using an Active Tracer with 50 Hz sampling. The Simulator Sickness Questioner (SSQ) was completed immediately afterward. For the SSQ sub-scores and each index for stabilograms, we employed two-way ANOVA with leg postures and presence/absence of stereoscopic images as factors. Moreover, we assumed that the input signal was the head acceleration in the transfer system to control the body sway and estimate the transfer function.

Abstract: Many kinds of cytokines and chemokines are produced in response to influenza virus infection through the course of cytokine cascade. Even a single cytokine exhibits various biological activities and different types of cells produce the same identical cytokine. In general, cytokines act to maintain the homeostasis of host condition. In influenza virus infection, it works as protective for the host against virus infection at its early stage, but often as pathogenic in its later stage. Cytokines play a pivotal role in establishment of virus specific immunity. However, over expression of cytokines causes irreversible severe damages to the host, including shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation, adult respiratory distress syndrome and multiple organ failure, a typical form of which is influenza encephalopathy. Pathogenicity of influenza virus might be determined by means of its potential capability to induce proinflammatory cytokines.

Abstract: Subtype classification of breast cancer by analyzing the gene expression profile of cancer cells is becoming a standard procedure. Breast cancer subtype classification is more useful than the conventional method because the characteristics of subtype classification is directly connected with the treatment method. However, genetic testing is invasive, and a part of cancer cells may not represent the overall nature of the cancer. In the computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) scheme for differentiation of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) by estimating the genetic properties of cancer based on Radiogenomics, principal component analysis (PCA) and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) were used for reducing the dimension of radiomic features, and we compared usefulness of both. We collected 81 magnetic resonance (MR) images, which included 30 TNBC and 51 others, from the public database. From the MR slice images, we selected the slice containing the largest area of the cancer and manually marked the cancer region. We subsequently calculated 294 radiomic features in the cancer region, and reduced the dimension of radiomic features. Finally, linear discriminant analysis, with the dimensionally compressed 10 image features, was used for distinguishing between TNBC and others. Area under the curve (AUC) was 0.60 when we used PCA, whereas AUC was 0.70 when we used Lasso (p=0.0058). Therefore, Lasso is useful for the determination of radiomic features in Radiogenomics.

Abstract: Recently, there has been an increasing focus on the rapid reduction of muscles that are required for the bending of the hip joint during walking (flexor muscles around the hip joint) with age. The flexor muscles around the hip joint include femoral rectus and abdominal muscles. These muscles have been implicated in falling in the elderly. In this study, we examined the smoothed surface electromyography (sEMG) of femoral rectus muscles during biofeedback training (BFT) of the dominant leg. To this end, we developed parameters for the measurement of shapes in the smoothed sEMG, and evaluated the changes in these parameters in the muscles with age. Statistical analysis indicated that it was necessary to include the time constant of the exponential decay curve fit to maximal points during prolonged muscular contraction, to evaluate the changes with age by using the smoothed sEMG during BFT. Reduction of the muscular regulation capacity due to aging can be detected by performing sEMG during BFT by using the time constant.

Abstract: Prostate cancer (PCa) cells frequently invade the surrounding stroma, leading to heterogeneous formation of structural atypia. The surrounding stroma contains multiple functionally diverse populations of fibroblasts that trigger numerous changes in PCa cells including motility. Thus, we hypothesized that direct or indirect contact of PCa cells with fibroblasts determines an invasive phenotype in PCa cells. We investigated the effects of 10 different patient-derived fibroblast lines on the three-dimensional (3D) morphogenesis of PCa cells growing on a viscous substrate in vitro. When grown alone, all 10 patient-derived fibroblast lines clumped on the viscous substrate, whereas the human androgen-sensitive PCa cell line LNCaP did not. Cocultures of LNCaP cells with seven of the patient-derived fibroblast lines (PrSC, pcPrF-M5, pcPrF-M7, pcPrF-M23, pcPrF-M24, pcPrF-M28, and pcPrF-M31) formed a thick fibroblast layer that resembled human prostate stromal structures. In contrast, cocultures of LNCaP cells with the remaining three fibroblast lines (NPF-M13, pcPrF-M10, and pcPrF-M26) did not form a thick fibroblast layer. Of the seven fibroblast lines that caused thick layer formation, four patient-derived fibroblast lines (PrSC, pcPrF-M5, pcPrF-M28, and pcPrF-M31) induced an invasive phenotype in LNCaP cells with a cord-like infiltrating growth pattern, whereas the other three fibroblast lines (pcPrF-M7, pcPrF-M23, and pcPrF-M24) induced no or a very weak invasive phenotype. Using cell culture inserts, none of the four patient-derived fibroblast lines that induced an invasive phenotype (PrSC, pcPrF-M5, pcPrF-M28, and pcPrF-M31) affected CDH1 mRNA expression in LNCaP cells; yet, two patient-derived fibroblast lines (pcPrF-M5 and pcPrF-M28) increased CDH2 mRNA expression in LNCaP cells, whereas the other two fibroblast lines (PrSC and pcPrF-M31) did not. These results suggest that the existence of multiple functionally diverse populations of fibroblasts in PCa tissue may be responsible for the diversity in PCa cell invasion, leading to heterogeneous formation of structural atypia.
