Abstract: With the object of determining the similarity criterion, experimental studies on vortex formation at pipe intakes were carried out using two geometrically similar circular vortex tanks, circulation in approach flow was generated by means of adjustable guide vanes Transparent pipe intakes of different sizes and liquids of different viscosities and surface tensions were used in a recirculating system Based on the analysis of data, a method has been proposed according to which a geometrically similar model is operated at the same Froude number as in the prototype and the observed critical submergence is corrected for distortion due to change in the model Reynolds number A criterion to determine the type of vortex for known geometric and kinematic conditions has also been proposed

TL;DR: In this paper, the role of different parameters on vortex formation was investigated and it was shown that the critical submergence is practically independent of the viscosity, as well as the surface tension of the liquid.
Abstract: The aim of this paper was to understand clearly the role of the different parameters on vortex formation. A study was made where the vanes for circulation are radial and thus the approach flow is free from circulation. Air entrainment in radial flow at intakes occurs when the submergence is greatly reduced and the flow is of the gulping type with the liquid surface above the intake pulsating. It was shown by experimentation that the critical submergence is practically independent of the viscosity, as well as the surface tension of the liquid. In radial approach flow towards vertical pipe intakes, the safe submergence to prevent air entrainment must always be greater than the value predicted by the proposed equation, for ranges of the Froude number between 1.1 and 20.

TL;DR: In this article, a novel technique was developed where vapor-deposited thin films of aluminum and iron approximately 0.2 /jm thick were utilized as substrates in the Cu/AI and Cu/Fe cementation systems.
Abstract: A novel technique was developed where vapor-deposited thin films of aluminum and iron approximately 0.2 /jm thick were utilized as substrates in the Cu/AI and Cu/Fe cementation systems. The nucleation of the incipient copper deposit upon the film surfaces was examined by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Cement copper nuclei were observed to be crystal polyhedra which enlarged and coalesced in the Cu/Fe system to form a continuous, botryoidal deposit while in the Cu/AI system isolated nuclei and clusters developed dendritic structures which grew to massive form with extended solution contact times. There was more apparent initial replacement of individual iron grains with copper in the Cu/Fe system than aluminum replacement in the Cu/AI system but the overall cementation mechanism, while exhibiting differences on comparing these systems, was fundamentally consistent with earlier concepts involving galvanic corrosion.

TL;DR: The occurrence of a stable and transmissible dicentric chromosome with 2 terminal centromeres has been reported in the ascites form of mouse sarcoma 180 cells which is chromosomally hypotetraploid.
Abstract: The occurrence of a stable and transmissible dicentric chromosome with 2 terminal centromeres has been reported in the ascites form of mouse sarcoma 180 cells which is chromosomally hypotetraploid. The number of such dicentrics is 2 in all endoreduplicated cells. The probable mode of anaphase separation of the dicentric has been discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the wave propagation at large distances from a source of disturbance (isolated harmonic electric charge or body force of fixed frequency) in an infinite piezoelectric medium belonging to classes (6), (6 m m) or ceramic (α m) and (6 2 2) is discussed by means of asymptotic evaluation (at large distances) of Fourier integrals.
Abstract: The wave propagation at large distances from a source of disturbance (isolated harmonic electric charge or body force of fixed frequency) in an infinite piezoelectric medium belonging to classes (6), (6 m m) or ceramic (α m) and (6 2 2) is discussed by means of asymptotic evaluation (at large distances) of Fourier integrals. Numerical results are given for the (6 m m) crystal class using the constants of cadmium selenide crystal.

Abstract: Stability constants of Be complexes of β-resorcylic acid (H3A) have been determined potentiometrically at 30°C, maintaining ionic strength at 0.1M with KNO3. The logK1 and logK2 values for 1:1 and 1:2 complexes are found to be 18.15 and 14.95 resp.

TL;DR: In this paper, the balanced field equations due to Penney were used to find solutions for cosmological models in the presence of charge and it was found that the introduction of charge adds additional terms to the Einstein conservation equation and distribution expressions.
Abstract: The balanced field equations due to Penney are used to find solutions for cosmological models in the presence of charge. Herein, it is found that the introduction of charge adds additional terms to the Einstein conservation equation and distribution expressions. The curvature parameter is affected and it is concluded that whereas matter affects it positively, the charge does so negatively. There then arises also the possibility of an evolution of local systems against the background of a global expansion.

TL;DR: Diurnal activity of Chrysomya megacephala Fabr.
Abstract: Diurnal activity of Chrysomya megacephala Fabr. (Diptcra: Calliphoridae), a synanthropic blowfly of considerable medical and veterinary importance was studied with fish baited traps in Calcutta. The activity of these flies is dependant on high temperature and low relative humidity. C. megacephala showed bimodal flight curve in summer and unimodal curve in winter. Intensity of light also seems to influence the periodicity curve of these flies in the study area.

TL;DR: It is proposed that outgrowths produced by conidial primary germ tubes of Erysiphe graminis f.
Abstract: Confusion exists regarding nomenclature and possible significance of outgrowths produced by conidial primary germ tubes (PGT) of Erysiphe graminis f. sp. tritici Em. Marchai on wheat leaves. Production of these outgrowths has been taken as a criterion of successful host-parasite relationship. However, such outgrowths have been observed to have developed from 12.3 % of the unsuccessful PGT on a resistant wheat and 9.2 % of the unsuccessful PGT on a susceptible wheat.

TL;DR: In this article, the annual reproductive behaviour of the frog, Rana hexadactyla, was studied from two climatologically contrasting regions and correlated with the environmental conditions, like temperature, relative humidity and rainfall prevailing there.
Abstract: The annual reproductive behaviour of the frog,Rana hexadactyla, was studied from two climatologically contrasting regions and correlated with the environmental conditions, like temperature, relative humidity and rainfall prevailing there. Since some data were available on the gonadal activity of this species from two other areas, they were also considered. The results show that the gametogenic activity is under the marked influence of the range of temperature and relative humidity prevailing in the locality while the pattern of rainfall plays a supplementary role. The activity begins sometime in March or April when the locality experiences the pre-monsoon (south west) showers. The gametogenesis occurs rapidly around Mangalore where the range of temperature between the monthly mean maximum and the minimum is narrow and stable from April to October but in Mysore city similar environmental conditions are seen from June to October and the gametogenesis becomes active during this period. Thus, ovulation and oviposition take place during June or July at Mangalore whereas the same occur towards the end of August at Mysore city.

TL;DR: In this paper, a complete vibrational analysis of the methyl ammonium ion CH3NH3+, and of CD3NH 3+, CH3ND3+ and CD3ND 3+ is described.
Abstract: A complete vibrational analysis of the methyl ammonium ion CH3NH3+, and of CD3NH3+, CH3ND3+ and CD3ND3+ is described in this paper. A General valence Force Field has been computed for these ions, belonging to C3ν sysmmetry, using the fundamental frequencies obtained from the infrared spectra. The mean square amplitudes and shrinkage constants and Coriolis coupling constants have also been calculated for the first time and presented here.
