Abstract: The preventive effect of the herbal formulation OST-6 (Osteocare) on the progress of bone loss induced by ovariectomy and concurrent calcium deficiency was studied in rats. Ovariectomy (OVX) and calcium deficiency (CD) resulted in bone loss as evident from decreased femoral weight and density. Treatment with OST-6 at a dose of 250 mg/kg body wt twice a day orally for a period of 16 weeks significantly restored the femoral weight and density. The biomechanical strength of the tibia was decreased by OVX and CD and this was significantly suppressed by the administration of OST-6. Histologically decalcified bone sections revealed narrowed, and the disappearance of, trabeculae and widened medullary spaces. The total numbers of tartrate-resistant acid phosphates (TRAP) positive cells were increased significantly in OVX animals. Treatment with OST-6 significantly inhibited these histopathological changes and strongly suggested that OST-6 was effective in preventing the progress of bone loss induced by ovariectomy and concurrent calcium deficiency.

Abstract: The pollen morphology of 11 salt tolerant plant species of family Amaranthaceae from the salt range of Northern Punjab, Pakistan has been studied. The palyno-morphological characters were examined using light and scanning electron microscope. The examined all salt tolerant species have a slight difference in size but have similarity in shape, pore ornamentation, and polarity. The observed morphological characters of pollen grains were pollen symmetry, size, shape, pore ornamentation, pore size, number of pores, exine thickness, polar and equatorial diameter and, P/E ratio. Apolar type of pollens has been observed in all species. Shape of pollens was spheroidal. Exine sculpturing of pollen grains was scabrate (six spp), microechinate (four spp), and microechinate-scabrate (one spp). Different pori numbers were observed in different species. The pantoporate aperturate and sunken pore ornamentation have been reported in all species. A pollen taxonomic key was developed using examined morphological characters for the accurate identification of halophytic taxa. The high fertility and low sterility of pollens confirmed that the selected halophytes are well-established in the salt region. The findings highlight the taxonomic significance of pollen morphology in correct identification and differentiation of salt tolerant plant species.

Abstract: Results of studies of the static and dynamic dielectric properties in rod-like 4-n-octyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8OCB) with isotropic (I)-nematic (N)-smectic A (SmA)-crystal (Cr) mesomorphism, combined with measurements of the low-frequency nonlinear dielectric effect and heat capacity are presented. The analysis is supported by the derivative-based and distortion-sensitive transformation of experimental data. Evidence for the I-N and N-SmA pretransitional anomalies, indicating the influence of tricritical behavior, is shown. It has also been found that neither the N phase nor the SmA phase are uniform and hallmarks of fluid-fluid crossovers can be detected. The dynamics, tested via the evolution of the primary relaxation time, is clearly non-Arrhenius and described via τ(T) = τ(c)(T-T(C))(-φ). In the immediate vicinity of the I-N transition a novel anomaly has been found: Δτ is proportional to 1/(T - T*), where T* is the temperature of the virtual continuous transition and Δτ is the excess over the 'background behavior'. Experimental results are confronted with the comprehensive Landau-de Gennes theory based modeling.
